Can, who had no actual interest in leaving the ship, elected to stay behind, instead standing at the airlock with a smile, keeping careful track of each crewmember who left the ship. Would be rather embarrassing to leave someone behind accidentally. Part of a security chief's job, he supposed.

"So Harken..." Can said, having opened a circuit to the specialist. "What's the story behind that suit of yours? Not exactly standard issue, that thing." Can had thought this through; watching everyone who passed through the airlock was bound to be boring, and he had to build trust with his team; the Mantis, he thought, would be trustworthy as long as it was paid, and with the singlemindedness of the racist he had dismissed Kel as an issue. Harken and Ameli, however, he thought deserved quite a good deal of thought. Harken's service record was, befitting a member of the special forces, mostly sealed, and what little Can did have access to were a few names and dates that meant nothing to him. He was a curiosity, and if they were all going to be cooped up together, they'd want to learn to like each other. Ameli, who was not yet part of his team, could wait.

Ashley nodded. "Yes Ma'am!" Ashley tried to contain it, but she was pretty excited. She loved shopping trips, even if it was on a strange and possibly dangerous space station outside of terrain space.

Kenshin Harken

IC: "Not for your average grunt, sir. My unit is a bit of a special case though. We go places and do things that most people only dream about... or have nightmares about."

He was quiet for a bit as the words brought several memories to the surface. With a mental shake of his head, Harken returned to the present and continued.

"To do our job we take the best of the best and make them better. One way the higher ups do that is by giving us these suits. Strength enhancing, can take shots that would normally blow off a limb, full sensor package, internal life support and whatever extra goodies the soldier wearing it feels like adding."

Clenching one fist he extended the blade on one arm, uncovered by plasma for the moment.

"Most of my jobs are on ships or in close quarters so I had these fellows added. The blade is extremely sharp by itself and I can cover them in plasma if I ever need the extra melting power. Handy for cutting through doors that get in the way."

Looking back up at Can his voice changed, becoming somewhat hollow and sad.

"You seem like a good man. I hope you never earn one of these."

"I serve the weak. I serve the helpless. I am their sword and their shield. If you want to strike at them, you must go through me, and I am not so easily moved."

Can had jumped slightly when a spring loaded blade popped out of his subordinate's forearm. "Fancy...seems useful at least. I'm not sure, I might prefer a personal shield generator more..." Can trailed off. "Not to imply that you're expendable or anything, but I'll probably have you walking in front on most of the boarding parties." Can said. "Since you ought to be able to take harder hits than most of us. The armor looks good at stopping plasma but how does it fare against bullets?"

IC [Colonel Ojeda]

By now, the security man Taylor had arrived in the hanger, the Colonel giving him a nod and proceeding to walk out through the opening hanger doors, making the transition from ship to station gravity relatively smoothly. She turned to her guard, looking at him for a moment before showing him a tube-shaped grenade. "Flash-bang, crystal powered. Make you blind for a week. If we get into a scuffle, don't look at me." With that, the duo set off, quickly traversing the station's hanger and getting into the main section, where they began their approach to the bar that the station controller had transmitted over. She wondered for a moment what crew would be there; if they had the ship ID, then obviously they were sent by the Federation, wouldn't make sense any other way. Five individuals, probably with Federation charters... well, at least it wasn't a skeleton crew anymore.

Before meeting up with the Colonel, Taylor had been in Engineering the whole time the ship was on level three alert, had listened to what he considered marvelous speeches delivered by the officers, and had swapped out his rifle for an easily concealable pistol.

Now, he found himself tasked with, what he considered, his most important mission yet: being bodyguard to the Colonel. Taylor followed Ojeda, even though Taylor wasn't entirely sure where they were going; he was sure that it didn't matter.

All that mattered was protecting the Colonel.

It was shortly thereafter that they arrived at the bar, given the oh-so-descriptive name of The Pale Slug. Walking in, it was a noisy place, with some odd Rockman opera playing in the background. All around were the species of every sort, even a strange crystalline being in the corner, speaking with some Rockmen. The Colonel weaved her way to the counter, tossing the bartender a credit and inquiring in hushed tones about where the newcomers were. After getting an answer out of the Engi, she motioned to Taylor, moving slowly to a round table, where five strange individuals sat. Two Zoltan were eyeing each other, a mammoth of a man sat in the center, and to his right, a slug and Engi conversed. Sliding herself opposite of the man, but motioning for Taylor to stay standing, she gave a brisk smile, though without any warmth in it.

"If I could see all your charters, we'll be able to talk a little easier."

The shorter of the two Zoltan, whose stature made him seem to crackle with compressed energy, pulled a holographic projector from somewhere, and immediately projected the required Charters. One, issued by the Zoltan government, was his license to act as an Adventure-Capitalist, a free agent on the fringes of civilized space. Another, also issued by the Zoltan, was his license to serve as a Precedentor. The third and final was issued by the Federation itself, a writ allowing him to serve as an adviser on certain ships of the Federation military; due to the secret nature of the ship, the charter was not specific. "My government has given me right to serve, Ma'am." He said, with the odd electrical hum that accompanied an energy being's voice. "If you'll have me aboard, I can be quite useful indeed. A venture like this needs backing financial as well as military..."

Taylor wasn't too interested in what was going on around him in the bar--at least no more than the need for alertness demanded.

Before too long, Colonel Ojeda lead him to a table where five...people, were seated. Following his colonel's wishes Taylor remained standing, "Look tough and be ready for anything," he thought to himself. "Look tough and be ready for anything." The spaceman repeated.

ZOSS

Zoss noticed the two Federation members the instant they walked into the bar, picking out their military personalities from the unorganized criminal minds of the rest of the bar. He made no move to turn his head or look at them, but as he continued his conversation with the Engi sitting next to him he mentally scanned them a few times, tying to be unobtrusive as possible. He could tell one was of very high rank, far outranking the other, who was a warrior. The higher ranking one also had spent more time working on mental shielding, being harder to read. They meant them no harm.

The slug knew without a doubt that these were his future employers.

He did not turn his head to face the Federation members until the higher-ranking one sat and spoke, and when he did, he did so slowly, as if he didn't care at all. In the end, he didn't really. Although he had been told that this was a mission of great importance, or at least derived that conclusion from noticing the way others talked or thought about it, he could care less if it succeeded. The entire war, really, was inconsequential. It was all just different types of people trying to kill each other over imagined slights. A good place to try and get rich, he supposed, if one was interested in that kind of thing. Unusually for a slug, he wasn't. In the end, the war meant little for him other than an increased chance of his death.

At the word of the higher-ranking one, Zoss reached into the folds of his skin and pulled out the charter, laying it flat on the table.

IC: [ Wulf Kharon ] - Galaxy's End / bar

Wulf Kharon, professional Federation privateer, self-proclaimed pirate, looked up from a crystal pint glass of cheap golden beer, his gaze tracking the newcomers as they entered the saloon. His tawny eyes moved, flicked once from the Colonel to her nearby bodyguard, and back again and settled as she took a seat directly across from his.

Leaning slightly forward, he produced a small laminated ID card and a neatly-folded sheaf of papers from his chest pocket, sliding them deftly across the table with his massive left hand. He waited until the Zoltan had done speaking, then rumbled briefly, "Here you go, ma'am. Credentials, written charter, government references... the lot."

The Colonel looked over the charters, deciding they were reputable enough, and began talking. She still needed the Engi and Zoltan's, but she was relatively confident they were legit as well. "Well then, welcome aboard the Kestrel. We'll be heading out of here in about four hours. Our Major Daniels will get your positions assigned and pay sorted. Any particularly pressing questions?"

"No, ma'am. No questions." responded Wulf calmly, tossing off the remainder of his drink in a single quick swallow. It must have been at least a quarter of the pint, but his sheer physical size made it look like nothing more than an average mouthful.

Nudging his sunglasses down off his forehead into place with his left index finger, he got to his feet and was gone, his muscular bulk moving with cat-like silence. Four hours... he still needed to retrieve his rucksack from his hotel room, but that would be the work of mere minutes. He could fit a lot of action into four hours, or a lot of nothing.

Paying his tab at the bar, he left the area and drifted casually out into the more 'tourist friendly' portions of the sprawling space station.

So it was time to leave the ship for a while. Time to gather up ingredients. Xhe had already been allotted the necessary amount of money to buy the ingredients necessary to keep the ship well fed, but knowing that they had to go to a heavily crowded place gave Souper the shivers. They'd get over it though, not that they had much of a choice. Taking some medicine to deal with the issue for a little while, Souper left the ship and headed to the market, with their bag of food stuffing, ready to fill it the first change they go the need to.

Heading through the market, Souper began to buy a variety of ingredients, avoiding anything that would spoil quickly or was poisoning to the majority of the group. Sure, Arsenic Pops could be something to get high off of for some...mutants...but it also killed humans, so not a good pick. Filling the bag to halfway, Souper was not at all happy to find out that they'd gotten to the end of the market and hadn't filled the bag. Focusing, Souper stood in the middle of the market, looking for something that would normally kill the slug, salted meat.

"I do not care if your children need the money for the academy." She rather doubted the man had any children judging from his body langauge. "I am telling you that the going rate for a starchart is at half of that, at the very most. I will not pay one bit more for it." Ameli crossed her arms, glowering at the merchant from behind her gasmask. "Perhaps I shall simply go to the next stall over, they may be more reasonable..." She wouldn't really, even the most slime-like human was more trustworthy then an alien, but there was no need for the man to know that.

The merchant threw up his hands in frusteration, considering he was built rather like a skeleton with a thin coating of flesh it was an interesting gesture. "Heartless woman!" Without further comment, the merchant handed her the starchart in question. Ameli smiled to herself. Haggling was new to her, all things considered, but she could tell when a being was lying quite well. Without a word, the Vendarian secret policewoman glided away from the stall, quite happy with her latest acquisition.

IC -- Francis

Francis slithered his way toward the market, leaving Ace to himself. "Not like Mister Personality will notice I've left anyway." He slowly made his way through the aisles, growing more disappointed with each minute that they didn't carry anything in the way of rock food. "Sorry, Roberto. Looks like we might have to make due with what we've already got."

Roberto, being a rock, lay motionless.

"Well what do you want me to do about it? It's not like I can force them to conjure up something that doesn't exist. Don't be so absurd." It was then that Francis noticed Souper standing some thirty feet away. He pinged the fellow slug and slithered over to him. "Perhaps he's found something suitable for rock nourishment..."

Feeling something hone in on them, Souper clutched their head for a moment before shaking it off. Why did that always...it didn't matter. All Souper knew was that "Francis" was on their way over to the current location Souper was at, so Souper got prepared, "Well hello" Souper said mentally, concentrating hard to actually talk through the mind with Francis, "What exactly do you need of me? Looking perhaps for Rock Nourishment? Perhaps you'd like to tell me what the rock normally eats" Souper said, having picked up the thought as Souper was scanning the crowd, having only moments ago tossed away the thought as useless.

"It varies occasionally, but Roberto usually isn't too picky. So long as it's along the lines of a salt solution capable of ionic bonding, he's happy." Francis reached down and stroked the rock a couple times. "Gives him a nice, crystallized coat. Tends to erode after extended walks though." Francis looked at Souper's bag. "Grocery shopping for this lot has got to be a pain; I can't imagine cooking for them. Crew could stand to eat more fungi and fruit that hasn't been purposely dried out." Francis licked his lips, remembering the burning sensation he experienced following lunch. "Also, I'm going to kill whomever is responsible for the concoction known as the Sauce of Soy."

After that, apply the solution to your...pet. What is that, anyways?" Souper asked, a little confused, "And also, did you not realize that Soy Sauce itself is filled with salt? And if you are wondering why we don't have non-dried fruit, it's because that spoils VERY quickly. I have dehydrated foodstuffs in here, and several cans. I have to worry about the dietary needs of the entire crew, and that includes those of my own people, despite the fact I must get salted things" Souper said, walking over to a merchant, and piling some pickled "Mackerel" into the bag, where it hermetically sealed immediately to avoid contamination.

IC: [ Wulf Kharon ] - Galaxy's End

Stepping out of a narrow steel-lined corridor into a much larger, more open area of the space station, Wulf Kharon found himself near the engineering department. The place was quiet, semi-deserted, with only a few staff on hand and even fewer customers, most of them the rough, borderline-criminal sort. Nothing unusual, relatively speaking; no one who particularly 'stood out', as the saying was.

With the exception of the two not-at-all-unattractive young women in matching nondescript trench coats. UFS Kestrel crew members. They had to be. There was no other possibility; only the Federation would think of using such a clichéd disguise. Not to mention, think of coupling such a disguise with flamboyant pink hair and a gene spliced cat-girl, of all things. In the movies, it would've worked. In the real deal, it didn't.

Already, the duo were starting to pick up a few sidelong glances, a suggestive wink here or there. They didn't belong, which was cause enough to turn heads, and they were rather pleasant to the masculine eye, if you liked their style. Not always a good combination.

Wulf Kharon knew lurking trouble when he saw it. The girls looked like they could handle themselves in a confrontation, but he didn't think they'd be adverse to an escort. Especially in the depths of a seedy outpost station called 'Galaxy's End'.

A quick stride, then another, and then he was beside them, making an impeccable aristocratic bow from the waist, dim light flashing on the holstered revolver at his belt. "Good afternoon, fair ladies. Wulf Kharon, licensed Federation privateer, at your service. You're from the fine ship Kestrel, I presume?"

"I'm quite aware that fruit spoils quickly," Francis replied rather defensively. He frowned, offended by what seemed to be the questioning of his intelligence. "I was merely stating that the other races could benefit from alternative dietary options. Furthermore, no, I was not aware that this 'Soy Sauce', as you put it, was filled with salt." Francis considered adding a comment about how foodstuffs ill-suited for slugs ought to be labeled, but saw little point in perpetuating an argument. For all he knew, Souper could be aware of his thoughts already. It was quite infrequent, but Francis was well aware that there have been times where his frustration leaked his thoughts out to be picked up by other slugs' psionic waves. "In any case, Roberto thanks you. Right, boy?"

Roberto remained inanimate.

Francis returned his attention to Souper. "Roberto here's my best friend. He's pretty much the only one on that tin can--" Francis jabbed a thumb in the direction of the Kestral. "--that I can have an intelligent conversation with. At least, that seems to be the case thus far." Francis snapped a finger, flinging mucus onto a nearby energy drink display. "That reminds me, we should get some cream of mushroom soup while we're here. Goes swell with green beans."
