Kenshin Harken

IC: Harken had simply cut any Engi that managed to get past his plasma fire to ribbons. The untrained mob members that had turned his way did not even stand a chance despite the captains lack of armor. Idly wiping cyborg blood from his "ceremonial" saber, the spec ops soldier moved over to the remaining members of the group. His head continued to turn, scanning the area for more hostiles as he waited for the teleporter to beam the next group up.

"I serve the weak. I serve the helpless. I am their sword and their shield. If you want to strike at them, you must go through me, and I am not so easily moved."

IC [The omnipotent narrator]

The following events were ever so slightly anticlimatic, though for the Kestrel crew, that was a blessing. After escaping to orbit, the Engi authorities had been called and the situation explained. The crew was able to escape charges of conspiracy for assassination after the evidence was reviewed, and the Kestrel avoided a firefight out of Engi space. Questions were raised, however, as three Engi superusers had been taken offline during the incident, showing there was a far greater effort behind this than a mob catching a lucky break. It was an interesting mystery, but not one the Kestrel had time to stick around for, so after polishing the ship up it promptly left the system with an apology for the mess.

IC [Colonel Ojeda]

Twelve days later

It had been an uneventful journey through the unchartered systems, roaming Mantis raiders keeping their distance and pirates not bothering with the Kestrel. It almost made Ojeda forget that she was on a mission that the Council told her she was probably going die on. Tabbing open her ledger, she looked at the schedule for the day; shifts were assigned, engines were running smoothly, hull damage was minimal... and there was a note left by Chastain in the corner, reminding Ojeda about their bet. Well, she couldn't very well let Chastain say she was too much of a coward, could she?

"All active crew," Ojeda's voice came on over the ship comms. "Gently drop what you're doing and report to the hanger bay. Daniels, Walker, it's go-time."

Gaven reattached his rifle to the magnetic pad he wore on his back before wandering over to the hanger bay. "Computer," he asked, "Any idea what the Colonel has planned?"

Estelle's pink hair was up in a swinging ponytail and she was in black shorts, spandex underneath, and a German soccer jersey. This was it. She was ready, her team was ready.

Estelle walked out of her room, bringing her cleats just in case they decided to play real fußball. But this was fun and seemed a lot like home again as Germans had played the sport as long as she could remember and probably would continue to do so. She couldn't lose.... The best she'd take was a tie.

The computer had beeped that it didn't know at Gaven, but the Rockman was soon to find out anyways.

The assembled crew was in the hanger, the fighters pushed off to the sides and a football field drawn out. It was smaller than a regulation field, the Kestrel just wasn't large enough, but it was spacious nonetheless. The Colonel had set up a ladder, which she climbed onto and pulled out handheld comm, voice coming onto the speakers.

"Alright crew! I have five thousand credits resting on this game today, as does your Lt. Colonel, so you know at least one of us is going be on your collective arses if your team loses today. Major Daniels and Major Walker will be captains of today's event, we'll be playing low-grav football. For the savages raised out on the colonies, it's regulation football with the grav plates turned down to .4 gee. For those not conquered by the glorious South American Republic, you play the game by kicking the ball into the goal. You touch the ball with your hands and I remove your hands. Landes, touch the ball with telekinesis and I'll have you cleaning this ship with your toothbrush." The Colonel pulled out a letter, reading the list on it. "Now listen up, your team assignments are coming. Major Daniels will captain Team A, consisting of the following;

  • Kenshin Harkin
  • Ovechkin
  • Ashley Landes
  • Zokander Zahm
  • Devas Sindorin
  • Au’Rehn
  • Souper Saladd

Major Walker will captain Team B, and will consist of the following;

  • Wulf Kharon
  • Can Skinter
  • Deuce
  • Ameli Halik
  • Kelezaag
  • Vincent Liu
  • Errogaven
Get to your teams and hash it out; game starts in five minutes. We'll be going for 90 minutes or until five goals, whichever comes first."

IC - Kelezaag:

The Mantis blinked. She was going to be forced to play soccer, then? Turning to her assembling team, she said, "Don't pass the ball to me. I'll probably just pop it, and not unintentionally."

IC Vincent

"... What?"

"... Oh... Oh !!! Where does everybody stand? Will I have to hit the ball using my head? I can't run for 45 minutes! <blah blah blah>..."

Association football was not Vincent's forte.

Kenshin Harken

IC: For once outside of his suit, Kenshin was currently off to the side doing stretches. He had black shorts and a black shirt with a katana stenciled on the back with Masamune printed above it.

Standing up he looked over at Daniels and asked. "Whats the plan?"

"I serve the weak. I serve the helpless. I am their sword and their shield. If you want to strike at them, you must go through me, and I am not so easily moved."

"Liu! Grow a spine, I can't accept money won because someone had a breakdown on the field. Look at the ball, find the ball, kick the ball in the enemy team's direction. It's .4 gee, you'll be fine."

IC:

"Walker! Oi, Walker! Estelle!"

Sophie Chastain swaggered forward as though she had just been pumped full of the power of Baby Jesus himself. She held out her arms and caught Estelle by the shoulders, kissing the major once on each cheek and then once on the forehead. She was beaming, almost giddy.

"I'll be watching and cheering for you," she promised. "The Colonel and I have a bet going. Make me rich, dollface."

"Of course, beautiful. I'll do my best to make you proud."

Sophie threw her head back and cackled on the way back to her seat next to the Colonel.

"You're smug now, but Daniels and Harkin are the best football players on this ship. Money's going towards my space yacht fund, by the way; maybe I'll buy one with a proper kitchen, and I'll hire you as a chief."

IC (Ameli, Devas)

Ameli and Devas hung back, more or less taken aback by the entire situation. They were being forced to play sports. With aliens, along with other assorted undesirables, slavers, someone they had decided was pirate who had no intentions of retiring whilst he still drew breath and last but certainly not least, the devil-woman who seemed to manufacture bioweapons from mere foodstuffs watching, waiting. Ameli slowly turned to regard Devas. "I am going to have to ask you to hit me. Hard. This must be a dream."

There was a certain note of desperation in her voice.

IC: Deuce (Hanger Bay, Dismayed)

A part of Deuce couldn't hold back a grin at the sheer absurdity of it all. Sure other crews he'd served with had done similar, but he'd never seen a military crew engage in such activities. It was enough to make him laugh, well almost. There were unfortunately a few things bogging his mind down, first was the careless way they tried to move his fighter. Sure he understood why it had to be moved, but that didn't mean he was going to allow just any grubby hands to touch his baby.

Deuce, sighed, if he hadn't been sleeping in his fighter who knows what would have happened. However the other issue came from how blatantly he'd been stabbed in the back. When his fighter was being moved, he had consented by working a deal with Ojeda to be the announcer, but like all their deals Ojeda had completely betrayed him.

"Hey Dave," Deuce spoke to the panel, making a last ditch effort to remedy the situation, "Any chance you could convince Ojeda to let me be announcer like we discussed. The two of us would be great together."

IC Vincent

"..."

"Sir, please hit me too," Vincent said to Devas. "Only sport my family ever watched was Badminton," he muttered to himself.

Vincent reluctantly assumed a position near both Devas and where one of the midfielders would be (at least he thought it was? His only knowledge of football came from school Phys'Ed and what he had read from curiosity. "Aiya..."

IC (Devas, Ameli)

Devas was silent for a few moments, then grabbed his left hand. "Oh no. My hand. It is broken. I will be unable to play. I am sad." The lack of effort he put into the act would have awed the director's of the cheapest of B-movies.  Devas then began to back into the hallway. "I must go to the medbay." By medbay, he of course meant 'hide in the hanger until this blows over".

Ameli waited a moment. Then moved after him. "I shall escort you." It was only proper, considering the oaths she had taken upon joining the secret police.

IC: [ Wulf Kharon ] - UFS Kestrel / Deck 1 / Hanger

Wulf, unfazed by the rather unexpected turn of events, commenced warming up his rather considerable muscle mass. A few push-ups, stretches, all the basics.

Inwardly, he was just hoping his physical abilities would make up for a distinct lack of knowledge (or interest) concerning the sport he was about to play. The rules seemed plenty simple, but no hands allowed? ######, that just wasn't right. But then, he was a thief, a killer, and a pirate; he knew all about wrong. One little bout of football shouldn't be a problem.

"So, Pink Hair, what's the plan? And what about, ah, deliberate physical collisions during play? Would that sort of thing be permissible?"

"No. Soccer is a game of heart and acting. The pros get nominated for osacars sometimes, you know? Now you seem to be quite the aggressor, would you be interested in being a striker? Or... Would you like to put those meaty arms to use and play goal keeper?" She asked with a hand on her hip.

"You're pretty big, big guys are good in goal."

IC [Colonel Ojeda]

Devas received a very disapproving glare as he passed by Ojeda's perch, and she flipped a ten-er down to Chastain. Apparently the two had also made a bet about the participation of the Vendarians. "Seven man football, I guess it fits our micro-field we have going on here."

Chastain wasn't paying much attention, instead standing up in the perch and waving her first wave of earnings.

"Es-teeeelle!" she roared out over the slowly rising din of noise on the micro-field. "I got us beer money!"

"You buying first round tonight?!"

"Nope! But she is!" The feral Lieutenant Colonel pointed a thumb at Ojeda and sat down with a ragged war cry.

"I'll be winning it back soon enough. Daniels! Don't be afraid to use psychological warfare! Scare the enemy, hit them where they hurt!" The Colonel glanced over at the face-faulting Vincent. "Walker, one of your men is trying to injure himself to get out of the game, please motivate him appropriately."

"Good. Get in goal. I want you to catch every ball before it crossed that goal line. Be aggressive, okay? Scream at the opposing team as they come to you, I don't care."

With that, Estelle walked over to Vincent, a very unhappy look in her eyes. "Vincent, look at me. Look at me good, Vince. Do I look happy?"

IC - Kelezaag:

Though she still despised the idea of being forced to engage in a recreational activity, Kelezaag had somewhat warmed up to the idea of playing soccer. The game reminded her of one of the several sports she had played long ago, back when she was just a nymph. She had never particularly enjoyed sports, though she didn't dislike them, either; it was just something that the best of the best were expected to partake in. Her combat training hadn't started until after her metamorphosis, so she had the time not occupied by her standard education to use as she wished. It was an unspoken rule, however, that those destined for greatness got a head start by playing sports competitively. She had done quite well, even going so far as to win a couple of trophies in regional tournaments, which was quite an accomplishment in Mantis society, where second place had always been first loser, and not rewarded with trophies, medals and the like. Hearing the rules of the game as they were explained to her team brought a way of nostalgia over her. This, coupled with the fact that her name was already associated with the team, so that she could not allow them to lose, were enough to change her mind.

"On second thought," she said, "I think I'll play for real. What position shall I fill, Ms. Walker?"
