Village Roadshow Dropped from LEGO Movie Sequel

Recommended Posts

You might have noticed a logo alongside of Warner Bros' during the opening credits when you saw The LEGO Movie. Don't expect to see it for the sequel - The Hollywood Reporter has an article saying that Village Roadshow is not being invited back to create the followup for the hugely successful LEGO Movie. Village apparently funded 50% of the film, including production and marketing, meaning they get half of the profits. One could see why Warner might not want to repeat that, now that the movie is a known quantity and the sequel is assumed to be a sure-fire hit as well. That's Hollywood for you, I guess.

What exactly does this mean for the quality of the next movie?

It's hard to say without knowing how much control or impact Village Roadshow had on the first movie. I'd say this probably won't affect the quality that much, and the writers, producers, and directors are much more important factors.

I did a little bit o' research on it, and Black Six is basically right. Seeing as Village Roadshow's main contribution was financial, the only way it'd affect the quality is if Warner Bros somehow fails to secure funding and investments from other sources and aren't able to pay the people and companies working on the sequel well enough to ensure that a quality film is made. Since The LEGO Movie was so spectacular and successful, I seriously doubt they'll have that problem. The writers, animations, producers, etc. are the ones who have the most influence on the finally outcome and I'd be a lot more worried if Animal Logic wasn't working on it anymore, or something like that.

As said by Pomegranate I doubt this will have much of an effect on the sequel. I only hope the sequel will be as successful outside of the US as well. It's only coming out next week in Europe and they actually redid the song "Everything is Awesome" in german for the german version (german chorus literal translation: You are simply super). Yes, it's as terrible as it sounds...
