Prototypes

This is more of a question topic, once it is answered I guess it can be moved/locked/deleted but...

How do people get their hands on prototypes other than being a lego employee? Do they sell them out after they are done with them? Or do they throw them in with the rest of the finished product? Thanks

A lot of the prototype parts you see floating around have been given out as contest prizes (such as BBC Contests, similar to the one we just had) or rewards for sending MOCs to conventions.

Prototype sets, on the other hand, are different, and I don't really know how people have come to acquire those. This topic has a large list of prototype parts and sets you can look through (though it's a little outdated now).

Aside from what Torran mentioned, some people have gotten parts from stores and factories (depending on region), though this is certainly much rarer.

For example, Cezium got a full set of teal Rahkshi parts, a bunch of trans-black / trans-green sockets, and this stuff from... I don't recall exactly, but I think it was a store in Serbia.

Plus there are mold tests that are relatively common, such as Mata green Nuva armor, that some people consider prototypes.

In that case, I must have a prototype because I have some green Nuva armour, and also some neon green Nuva armour where I have no idea where it came from.

Do you mean lime green? Because that's what LEGO used to send out as replacement Nuva armor 'cause they didn't have it in silver.

Yes, Lime green. I didn't know they sent them out as replacements, because I looked on bricklink and the only set that officially contains lime green nuva armor is an Exo-Force set. I was hoping it would be more rare...

Lime green was not the color that Chro mentioned, he means plain green.

Oh, and last year I got a prototype part that I used in a MOC. :D

I would personally kill (wouldn't) for a prototype. They look so cool and amazing for MOCs. I love the Forgotten's mask, and the teal Rahkshi is mesmerizing (Teal is amazing on any lego piece.). I may have a prototype and not know it, I will scan my collection to spot anything. I know my friend who makes it his goal to get more obsessed in something than I am had an entirely silver Matau Turaga mask from one of the metrutoran. Misprint or something I am guessing.

I couple of people have purchased prototypes on BrickLink, especially from more System-oriented fans who don't know the value or rarity of a collectible constraction item. I remember 55555 snagging a really unique Zamor off of BrickLink a while back.

All my prototypes have their origins in convention appearances. After three BrickFairs and a day at Bricks Cascade, I've got four on my shelf.
