Mata Gold

Recommended Posts

So, as I'm pretty sure everyone here knows, the Toa Mata got some gold masks that did fancy stuff. You could get these gold masks in set form. I have 4 "gold" masks, and they don't look gold to me. They look more like a copper-bronze color. If I hold one up to a light, it looks a bit more gold, but still, I don't think that's really gold.

When I saw my first "gold" mask and saw it looked copper-bronze, I thought the seller on Bricklink kinda derped. But when I got my next 3, I saw they were also the same color, and it couldn't have been a coincidence.

So, is the gold color from 2001-2003 really the color of gold? Does everyone else have a coppery colored "gold" mask?

I have them, they're part of my avatar, but I am pretty sure it's their color. Having the copper huna too,I can say the color is different.

But I thought exactly the same thing when I first got my mask, it's normal

Yes, until 2006, the "Gold" Kanohi were made in what would be called "Bronze" today.

Eh, not quite. The "gold" Mata masks were definitely a different color than the ones Lhikan, Takanuva, and Iruini have.

Which is similar to the way the collectible "silver" masks were different from the different silver that is used.

Looks like Aanchir isn't her yet. :P

I suppose after being used to the shinyness of Voya gold, Mata gold isn't gold to me. Meh.

I recall that too. I just bought the set off Bricklink a week ago, and some providers even describe the Great masks as "Copper". They also refer to the "silver" ones as "Pearl Dark grey". Some do refer to them as "metallic gold" and "Metallic Silver", whereas the Avohkii and Takanuva's armor is referred to as "Flat Gold".

Time is my frenemy. So is money.
May the classics never die and may the future find a new set of Toa.

The first gold masks (other than the actual solid gold masks from the 2001 Quest for the Golden Mask sweepestakes) came in the 2002 mask packs, and were a color officially called 178 Yellow Flip/Flop. There were three colors in the "Flip/Flop" color group: 176 Red Flip/Flop (the color of the copper Huna and Komau masks in 2001), 178 Yellow Flip/Flop (the color of the gold Great Masks in 2002), and 179 Silver Flip/Flop (the color of the silver Great Masks in 2002). These three colors had a special property: when lit from in front, they were metallic with a slightly streaky, glittery look, and when lit from behind they were semi-transparent. Flickr user Eldeeem has a picture showcasing that effect here. All three were prone to slight variations, and copper Huna from the United States and copper Huna from Europe could be clearly differentiated in a side-by-side comparison. I do not know if any parts other than BIONICLE masks were ever released in this color.

The gold color from 2003–2005, used for masks like Toa Takanuva's Kanohi Avohkii, Toa Lhikan's Kanohi Hau, and Iruini's Kanohi Kualsi, was a different color called 147 Sand Yellow Metallic. This gold color looked a lot darker, more brownish, and less glittery than previous gold masks. There are prototype Kanohi Avohkii in another gold color called 189 Reddish Gold. This is basically the same color used for the "copper" Krana-Kal that came with Nuhvok-Kal, and I'm the proud owner of one of these. No finalized Kanohi masks were released in this color.

The gold color used from 2006 onwards is called 297 Warm Gold, and it took the place of both Sand Yellow Metallic and Reddish Gold. It's similar to Reddish Gold but has less red/orange in it and more yellow. This color is used to this day in themes such as Ninjago and Hero Factory, though there is sometimes very slight inconsistency between Warm Gold parts released now and those released in 2006. Some 2005 parts, like the Kanohi Kraahkan in the Tower of Toa playset, came in Sand Yellow Metallic in earlier production runs and Warm Gold in later production runs, and the Warm Gold ones are highly sought-after.

It sounds to me like the mask you're describing is Yellow Flip/Flop, but there's an easy way to find out for sure. Hold it in front of a light and hold your finger between it and the light. If you can see the shadow of your finger, then that's definitely Yellow Flip/Flop.

However, all three colors (and many other LEGO colors never used in BIONICLE, like 127 Gold or 310 Metalized Gold) could be called "gold" without being dishonest. Gold has a long history as a color name (in fact, English-language references to the color "gold" date back over a century before references to the color "orange"), and there are many shades of gold, just as there are for colors like red and blue.

Well, there's the Aanchir post :P

Anyway, so I just tried the light thing with the masks, and that's actually pretty cool. Dat yellow. Dat. Yellow.

On Bricklink, there are some Great Mask lots from the 2002 mask packs listed as Copper, and some listed as Metallic Gold. Were those masks ever released in both colours, or is this a goof by the people running Bricklink?

It's a goof. Bricklink does not have an official name for Yellow Flip/Flop or Silver Flip/Flop, and randomly packed mask packs do not have inventories in the Bricklink database, so what the gold and silver masks from these packs are called is entirely at the discretion of Bricklink sellers.

It's safe to say that any 2001 Toa masks listed in any gold or copper color by Bricklink sellers will be Yellow Flip/Flop. If these masks exist in any other gold-ish or copper-ish color, it's certainly news to me.

Yeah, I always felt this way. The gold was pretty... unspecial. Even the silver was a kind of gross green-tint that never really appealed to me. I was disappointed when I got my gold + silver masks in 2002 - I substituted Tahu's mask with Jaller's yellow Hau and I always thought that worked more effectively (not to mention resembled MNOG).

To me they were a really dark gold. Still looked great, though I do not know how Gali ever saw out of her visor.
