Chapter One

The man’s eyes snapped open.

He had been asleep for…what was it? A while, he imagined. Though, strangely, he felt as if it had been more than a simple nap. Like it was a coma.

He also strangely felt… inhuman. Like he had something altered in his genes. Possibly it had something to do with why he was here. But where was here?

He sat up and surveyed his surroundings. He was lying on a hard metal bed without a mattress. There was no blanket. The room was small and just about empty. The walls, floor and ceiling were all strangely curved, like he was in a cylinder. The color of the inside was shiny black. The room was lit by dark blue lights on the ceiling. A mirror was attached to the wall.

He used it to look at what he was wearing. Medium armor over a red-and-black vest with yellow and orange accents on the edges.

There was a strange protrusion in the side of the wall with a button next to it. Then he realized something.

He knew nothing. Well, almost nothing. He knew his name, which was Ignus. What an odd name. And he had an innate understanding of the common English language. But that was about it. Other than that, he was stumped.

He felt a strange impulse to walk over to the protrusion and hit the button. He did so. A metal plate slid aside to reveal a silver weapon that looked like a cross between a katana and a standard sword.

He picked the weapon up, feeling a strange attachment to it. He twirled it in his hand, hearing the hum of the metal cutting through the air. He put it in a sheath that he just noticed was lying next to the weapon. He fit the sheath on his back and noticed something else in the containment.

It was a red helmet, complete with holes for the eyes and breathing room. He picked it up, feeling its lightness in his hands. He tried it on, and it fit perfectly. Ignus walked toward the end of the room, where he saw another button. He pushed it.

There was a loud hiss, and the end of the room popped off. He saw a beach right in front of him, with white sand and a cliff in the distance.

Ignus stepped out of the room, looked back and saw that it was contained inside a canister, which appeared to have ran aground from the sea.

He turned back around to find a strange beast in front of him. It was the color of the sand, wearing some barely-fashioned light armor. Its red eyes looked like they could pierce into his soul. The creature held a crooked blade in its right hand, and it crouched, as if waiting to pounce in attack.

Ignus unsheathed his sword, ready to defend in case the creature attacked. The two circled each other for about ten seconds before the creature moved.

It lunged towards him, and he parried with his sword. The creature hissed out a snarl as it strengthened its grip on the blade, trying to overwhelm Ignus’ power. Ignus used this to his advantage, sidestepping and sending the creature sprawling on the sand.

Ignus held his sword in a downwards position to stab. At the last second, it rolled out of the way, leaving the sword stuck in the sand. The creature kicked Ignus out of the way and picked his sword up.

Now disarmed, Ignus had no idea what to do. He saw the creature leap toward him, both weapons in hand. Ignus shielded himself with his hands, ready to die.

However, he felt nothing.

Ignus slowly opened his eyes, and saw the creature on the ground, clearly wounded, both weapons at its side.

Ignus looked around and saw a sort of force field around him. It seemed to have blocked the creature and threw him to the ground. Did I make that? , he wondered.

Suddenly, the shield flickered for a moment and then went out. The creature slowly got up, limping. It snarled directly at him. Ignus walked toward it, standing tall. He knew what he had to do.

He felt it in his veins, in his hands. He held his palm up, and mentally made a stream of fire some from it. The hot substance danced across his hands, making them rather warm. Strangely, he felt no pain.

Ignus took control of the flames, shooting them towards the monster. It screamed in agony as it was burned alive.

Ignus walked away, to find out who he was and where he came from.

If I sounded like a geek in this

post, you are correct.

"Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection.  It means never having to play it cool about about how much you like something.  It's basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult.  Being a geek is extremely liberating." - Simon Pegg
