One of the interesting things about Bionicle is how each element has its own personality type. Granted, many characters defy the expected personality of their element, but nonetheless the general trends are there.
Now, an extra-interesting thing is that one of the most well-known and trusted personality type theories, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, which you can read about here, http://www.personali.../html/info.html , has sixteen different personality types. That's very lucky, because there are sixteen Bionicle elements! This is my attempt at decoding what the stereotypical personality is for each element. Descriptions of each personality are copied and pasted from the website linked above.

Fire: ESTJ
"ESTJs are take-charge people. They have such a clear vision of the way that things should be, that they naturally step into leadership roles. They are self-confident and aggressive. They are extremely talented at devising systems and plans for action, and at being able to see what steps need to be taken to complete a specific task. They can sometimes be very demanding and critical, because they have such strongly held beliefs, and are likely to express themselves without reserve if they feel someone isn't meeting their standards. But at least their expressions can be taken at face-value, because the ESTJ is extremely straight-forward and honest."
Tahu and Jaller clearly fit this type, with the difference being that Jaller does a better job of covering his weaknesses than Tahu did at first.

Water: ENFJ
"ENFJs are people-focused individuals. They live in the world of people possibilities. More so than any other type, they have excellent people skills. They understand and care about people, and have a special talent for bringing out the best in others. ENFJ's main interest in life is giving love, support, and a good time to other people. They are focused on understanding, supporting, and encouraging others. ENFJs have a strong need for close, intimate relationships, and will put forth a lot of effort in creating and maintaining these relationships. They're very loyal and trustworthy once involved in a relationship."
Gali and Macku are clearly examples, and Nokama might be.

Air: ESFP
"For the ESFP, the entire world is a stage. They love to be the center of attention and perform for people. They're constantly putting on a show for others to entertain them and make them happy. They enjoy stimulating other people's senses, and are extremely good at it. They would love nothing more than for life to be a continual party, in which they play the role of the fun-loving host.
ESFPs love people, and everybody loves an ESFP. One of their greatest gifts is their general acceptance of everyone. They are upbeat and enthusiastic, and genuinely like almost everybody. An ESFP is unfailingly warm and generous with their friends, and they generally treat everyone as a friend. However, once crosesed, an ESFP is likely to make a very strong and stubborn judgment against the person who crossed them. They are capable of deep dislike in such a situation."
Lewa and Matau are clearly examples.

Ice: ISTJ
"ISTJs have tremendous respect for facts. They hold a tremendous store of facts within themselves, which they have gathered through their Sensing preference. They may have difficulty understanding a theory or idea which is different from their own perspective. However, if they are shown the importance or relevance of the idea to someone who they respect or care about, the idea becomes a fact, which the ISTJ will internalize and support. Once the ISTJ supports a cause or idea, he or she will stop at no lengths to ensure that they are doing their duty of giving support where support is needed. The ISTJ is not naturally in tune with their own feelings and the feelings of others. They may have difficulty picking up on emotional needs immediately, as they are presented."
Kopaka is probably an example, and Nuju certainly is.

Stone: ESTP
"ESTPs are outgoing, straight-shooting types. Enthusiastic and excitable, ESTPs are "doers" who live in the world of action. Blunt, straight-forward risk-takers, they are willing to plunge right into things and get their hands dirty. They live in the here-and-now, and place little importance on introspection or theory. The look at the facts of a situation, quickly decide what should be done, execute the action, and move on to the next thing. However, the ESTP tends to have their own strong belief in what's right and what's wrong, and will doggedly stick to their principles. The Rules of the Establishment may hold little value to the ESTP, but their own integrity mandates that they will not under any circumstances do something which they feel to be wrong."
Pohatu has so few personality weaknesses that he's hard to type, but Onewa, Hewkii and Hafu fit this.

Earth: ISFJ
"ISFJs live in a world that is concrete and kind. They are truly warm and kind-hearted, and want to believe the best of people. They value harmony and cooperation, and are likely to be very sensitive to other people's feelings. People value the ISFJ for their consideration and awareness, and their ability to bring out the best in others by their firm desire to believe the best.
ISFJs have a rich inner world that is not usually obvious to observers. They constantly take in information about people and situations that is personally important to them, and store it away. This tremendous store of information is usually startlingly accurate, because the ISFJ has an exceptional memory about things that are important to their value systems."
Onua, Taipu and possibly Midak are examples.

Light: INFP
"INFPs are highly intuitive about people. They rely heavily on their intuitions to guide them, and use their discoveries to constantly search for value in life. They are on a continuous mission to find the truth and meaning underlying things. Every encounter and every piece of knowledge gained gets sifted through the INFP's value system, and is evaluated to see if it has any potential to help the INFP define or refine their own path in life. The goal at the end of the path is always the same - the INFP is driven to help people and make the world a better place.
Generally thoughtful and considerate, INFPs are good listeners and put people at ease. Although they may be reserved in expressing emotion, they have a very deep well of caring and are genuinely interested in understanding people. This sincerity is sensed by others, making the INFP a valued friend and confidante. An INFP can be quite warm with people he or she knows well."
Takua/Takanuva is undoubtedly an example.

Shadow: ENTJ
"There is not much room for error in the world of the ENTJ. They dislike to see mistakes repeated, and have no patience with inefficiency. They may become quite harsh when their patience is tried in these respects, because they are not naturally tuned in to people's feelings, and more than likely don't believe that they should tailor their judgments in consideration for people's feelings. In the absence of this awareness, the ENTJ will be a forceful, intimidating and overbearing individual. This may be a real problem for the ENTJ, who may be deprived of important information and collaboration from others. The ENTJ has a tremendous amount of personal power and presence which will work for them as a force towards achieving their goals."
Teridax is the ultimate ENTJ, and Miserix and Antroz fit this too.

Lightning: ENFP
"Most ENFPs have great people skills. They are genuinely warm and interested in people, and place great importance on their inter-personal relationships. ENFPs almost always have a strong need to be liked. They have an exceptional ability to intuitively understand a person after a very short period of time, and use their intuition and flexibility to relate to others on their own level. Because ENFPs live in the world of exciting possibilities, the details of everyday life are seen as trivial drudgery."
Not much to work with here. I see Vo-Matoran as chaotic but friendly. Canonically, it's known that most are pretty sociable.

Magnetism: ESFJ
"The ESFJ takes their responsibilities very seriously, and is very dependable. They value security and stability, and have a strong focus on the details of life. They see before others do what needs to be done, and do whatever it takes to make sure that it gets done. ESFJs are warm and energetic. They need approval from others to feel good about themselves. They are very giving people, who get a lot of their personal satisfaction from the happiness of others. They want to be appreciated for who they are, and what they give. They're very sensitive to others, and freely give practical care. ESFJs are such caring individuals, that they sometimes have a hard time seeing or accepting a difficult truth about someone they care about."
You know, 'magnetic personality.' Jovan wasn't really characterized, but an ESFJ could certainly lead a team.

Sonics: INTP
"INTPs live in the world of theoretical possibilities. They live primarily inside their own minds, having the ability to analyze difficult problems, identify patterns, and come up with logical explanations. They seek clarity in everything, and are therefore driven to build knowledge. They are the "absent-minded professors", who highly value intelligence and the ability to apply logic to theories to find solutions. They typically are so strongly driven to turn problems into logical explanations, that they live much of their lives within their own heads, and may not place as much importance or value on the external world. Their natural drive to turn theories into concrete understanding may turn into a feeling of personal responsibility to solve theoretical problems, and help society move towards a higher understanding."
Does Krakua seem like this? He could be. Anyway, it fits well with De-Matoran's love of quiet.

Plasma: ENTP
"ENTPs are idea people. Their perceptive abilities cause them to see possibilities everywhere. They get excited and enthusiastic about their ideas, and are able to spread their enthusiasm to others. In this way, they get the support that they need to fulfill their visions. This ability to intuitively understand people and situations puts the ENTP at a distinct advantage in their lives. They generally understand things quickly and with great depth. Accordingly, they are quite flexible and adapt well to a wide range of tasks. They are good at most anything that interests them. As they grow and further develop their intuitive abilities and insights, they become very aware of possibilities, and this makes them quite resourceful when solving problems."
Nothing at all to go on here, just made sense to me.

Gravity: INTJ
"The INTJ's interest in dealing with the world is to make decisions, express judgments, and put everything that they encounter into an understandable and rational system. Consequently, they are quick to express judgments. Often they have very evolved intuitions, and are convinced that they are right about things. Unless they complement their intuitive understanding with a well-developed ability to express their insights, they may find themselves frequently misunderstood. In these cases, INTJs tend to blame misunderstandings on the limitations of the other party, rather than on their own difficulty in expressing themselves. This tendency may cause the INTJ to dismiss others input too quickly, and to become generally arrogant and elitist."
This was just my personal feeling, Gravity=serious.

Psionics: INFJ
"INFJs have uncanny insight into people and situations. They get "feelings" about things and intuitively understand them. As an extreme example, some INFJs report experiences of a psychic nature, such as getting strong feelings about there being a problem with a loved one, and discovering later that they were in a car accident. This is the sort of thing that other types may scorn and scoff at, and the INFJ themself does not really understand their intuition at a level which can be verbalized. Consequently, most INFJs are protective of their inner selves, sharing only what they choose to share when they choose to share it. They are deep, complex individuals, who are quite private and typically difficult to understand. INFJs hold back part of themselves, and can be secretive."
Need I say more? Varian could be INFJ I guess.

Iron: ISTP
"ISTPs are loyal to their causes and beliefs, and are firm believers that people should be treated with equity and fairness. ISTPs like and need to spend time alone, because this is when they can sort things out in their minds most clearly. They absorb large quantities of impersonal facts from the external world, and sort through those facts, making judgments, when they are alone. ISTPs are action-oriented people. They like to be up and about, doing things. They are not people to sit behind a desk all day and do long-range planning. Adaptable and spontaneous, they respond to what is immediately before them. They usually have strong technical skills, and can be effective technical leaders. They focus on details and practical things. They have an excellent sense of expediency and grasp of the details which enables them to make quick, effective decisions."
Does Zaria seem like this? Maybe?

Plantlife: ISFP
"ISFPs have a strong affinity for aesthetics and beauty. They're likely to be animal lovers, and to have a true appreciation for the beauties of nature. They're original and independent, and need to have personal space. They value people who take the time to understand the ISFP, and who support the ISFP in pursuing their goals in their own, unique way. People who don't know them well may see their unique way of life as a sign of carefree light-heartedness, but the ISFP actually takes life very seriously, constantly gathering specific information and shifting it through their value systems, in search for clarification and underlying meaning."
Seems like a good personality for the element most tied to nature?

TLDR: At least Google the four-letter acronym next to each element and skim over the summary of it.

considering you explained it quite well, with the possible execption of the few elements we don't have much info on, I have no idea what to say except that you did a great job.

ENFP

Warmly enthusiastic and imaginative. See life as full of possibilities. Make connections between events and information very quickly, and confidently proceed based on the patterns they see. Want a lot of affirmation from others, and readily give appreciation and support. Spontaneous and flexible, often rely on their ability to improvise and their verbal fluency.

Guess I'm Vo.

Wow, this is impressive. I love seeing people match up fictional characters to Myers-Briggs personality types; I'm shocked I never thought of doing it with BIONICLE. Nice job expanding on the other elements, too, especially considering how little characterization they ever got.

I got Gravity, which is a refreshing change from the other fiction-correlations. Normally, all the INTJs are supervillains. I find it quite inspiring.

Angel, your point about supervillains is a good one, they are normally INTJs who want to rule simply because (in their mind) they are right and everyone else is wrong. Teridax, on the other hand, is ENTJ: he doesn't just want to rule, he wants to sit on a throne where everyone else can see him. I think Tuma is, too.
Zaktan, on the other hand, is INTJ. So is the Shadowed One. Both of them are comfortable ruling unseen from their lairs.
Pridak is an ESTJ, he isn't a schemer like Teridax. He sees one step of his plan at a time.
Velika, very unusually for a grand villain, is an INTP. He sees the world not as a chessboard, but as a puzzle that only he knows how to solve, and his murders are only pieces being put in their rightful place to him.

I'm INTP (if you couldn't guess from my putting this together in the first place!) and Sonics fits me pretty well; I even have sensitive hearing. :P

Originally, when I came across the personality types I tested myself as an ISTP type. That would make me Iron in this lineup, which I'm all for, Iron is one of my favorite elements.

Just to be sure, I took the test a second time, and if anything I was tested as even more ISTP than last time, so...

I guess it's official, I'm an Iron elemental. Maybe that's why I write my Fe-Toa RPG character so well   :P

It's more than just that. It's also that I in general have always found myself very attracted to a few specific character archetypes. Namely, the mechanics and inventors. People like Nuparu, Avak, Otto, Gyro Gearloose, Ratchet etc. There's just something inherently appealing about these kinds of characters to me, and it ties in pretty closely to Iron/Metal as a theme.

And my first RPG character was an Iron elemental. Also wow.

Unlike you two, I've never felt attracted* to Gravity. However, I do think Zaktan's the coolest thing since sliced bread, so there's some correlation.

* I apologize for that terrible pun.

Gyro Gearloose? I assume you mean the Ducktales one? Anyway, yeah. I like those kinds too. Nuparu was great, though it seems he doesn't have any more time for inventing amazing things now that he's a Toa. Interestingly, his primary strength seems to be reverse-engineering, but now I'm getting off-topic.

Nice work with this. I skimmed some of them to be honest, but the ones I read seemed usually pretty reasonable. Obviously as it wasn't intentionally planned this way we wouldn't expect a perfect matchup, so yeah. I did think Light seemed like an especially poor match. Takua doesn't seem intuitive to me, quite the opposite as he often blundered and didn't get others much, and ended up needing somebody else to point out the obvious to him -- that he'd always been different. On the other hand, he did seem to quickly figure out what Jaller meant by that, so unsure. I only bring it up to have something to discuss. :shrugs:

Now, I have my pet peeves about most personality type claims (really, there are over six billion personality types :P), and looking at your link there, this is no different, but it's beside the point so I won't quibble.

Angel: Forgot to mention, Dume seems to be an INTJ too. Self-confident, intellectual and serious. You don't see INTJ good guys too often either, outside of detective novels.

Chro: Well, lots of actual characters have personalities that don't match their element, so it's not an issue!

bones: Really? Light was the element I was most proud of how I typed. To me Takua seems like one of the most intuitive characters. Just look at the beginning of the movie: he follows his intuition and decides to investigate an intriguing artifact even though he's about to be late for a Kolhii match. It's Jaller, the sensing character, who points out that this is not a good idea, especially when the artifact is on the other side of a river of lava. Luckily it did turn out to be the right thing to do, but without intuition there was no way of knowing that.
He is also very understanding of others; we can see this in his befriending the members of his Company despite their very different personalities, and later in his support of the future Toa Inika and the Toa Nuva. That doesn't necessarily make him good at understanding himself.

That was portrayed as more about his desire to explore, because he didn't fit in with the Ta-Matoran, because he was really an Av-Matoran. It wasn't portrayed as him being intuitive, although I'll admit that's a clever interpretation I can't really disprove. :) It seemed more to me like destiny using his love of exploring as a tool to get him to find what he needed to find. It was also portrayed as part of his residual irresponsibility, which likewise destiny could have been using (though his intuition could also be using it).

But what I meant is he didn't seem to be consciously choosing to listen to his intuition, but rather shirking his "duty" (if a sports competition can count as duty :P But all those people took the trouble of showing up for the audience so I'd say it does). To me an intuitive person is somebody who does what they do because they realize their intuition is saying it's wise. It didn't seem to me that Takua was doing that, more like the opposite; he knew it wasn't wise and that was why he did it, for fun basically. In other words, he apparently did not know, by intuition or otherwise, that anything good would come of it. It wasn't necessary for him to have any level of awareness of good coming from it other than just having fun and satisfying his curiosity.

Yes, I'm thinking of the movie. Pretty sure I don't have the book... *realizes he's sitting next to his stack of books at the moment... checks* Nope. Maybe you could find the part in your copy if you have it and see if it sheds any light on this?

Not that it really matters -- obviously the story team / movie people didn't have this in mind anyways. But might be fun to look into. Intuitiveness is a subject that greatly interests me personally. :)

I like that you took the time to match these up with elements, does make it a lot more fun than just finding your personality and basically just not doing anything with that information.

Thanks! You know, I'm considering a 4x4 chart with the personalities compared to well-known Bionicle characters... Aside from the patrons of the eight major elements, I'm thinking ENFP Hahli, ESFJ Nokama, INTP Whenua, ENTP Kongu, INTJ Dume, INFJ Vakama, ISTP Nuparu, ISFP Nixie (???). I tried to stick to characters from the first few years, as they're more widely known. Anyone have advice?

I've taken the Myer-Briggs-Jung test a few times and it keeps switching between ISFJ and INFJ... Earth and Psionics. Neither of these have I ever written characters for XD Interesting idea, though.

Are we going to also include Carl Jungian archetype theory into the mix? It seems very fitting given how there are clear personality epitomes in early Bionicle.

I just looked that up... It doesn't fit most areas of Bionicle, but it seems like a good match for 2006!
The self: meaning a person's conscious and unconscious identity. Aside from the Matoran, this is what the Toa are trying to save: their identities as sapient beings.
The shadow: the dark, repressed side of the personality. Their Hordika forms, of course, are the shadow threatening to take control.
Anima and animus: the perceptions of femininity by males and of masculinity by females. Roodaka and Sidorak seem like these archetypes, or at least evil versions of them.

But this is a bit different from the point of the thread.

Fascinating.

This actually is quite fun and interesting. I have some knowledge of the MBTI, and it's very cool that you took the time to do this. I've been wanting to do something like this for a while.

Hmmm…according to the above I am associated with Magnetism. Huh. Thats kinda funny cause I never considered myself to be that element. Of course, I always associated myself with the simple element of Air because…you know…free and soaring. I almost thought I'd be INFP Light. And in a sense I am, which only confuses me because I can see myself in nearly all the personalities except maybe the authoritative ones like ESTJ Fire.

Just label me Divergent. :P

So I have to agree with Bonesii about the six billion personalities, ^_^  but an ESFJ Magnetism element is pretty cool.

Magneto+Bionicle=Awesome

Looks like I'm Air. Not bad, really. I love green and having fun, especially with other people. While a lot of people have generally accepted me and love partying with me, there's actually that one guy who doesn't want any of it! I'm no kidding. That one guy exists.

Anyway, this is a really good observation. I like how the characters in BIONICLE fit these molds and live by them.

So, how's this project coming along?

And would it be too much to ask for a villain chart as well?

Oh, that... I was just considering it for a moment, not actually seriously embarking on it. As for villains, I'd already planned Teridax for ENTJ, and there almost certainly aren't Bionicle villains for every MBTI type.

Just reread this. Not sure about Zaria, but he does seem like an action type of person. According to your chart, the type for Iron includes technical skills, which would make sense considering the Nynrah Ghosts.

Ice and Lightning have completely opposite personalities here, so, that shouldn't really be possible.

It depens on the test you take. They're usually not very reliable. I find this one to be the best approach, as it makes you think for yourself and addresses how vague personalities really are: www.personalitypathways.com/type_inventory.html

I'm with you, Oroki. I kept getting INTJ and being a little displeased with the result. That test is the best online one I've seen too.

I'm Iron.  :happydance:

This is pretty darn awesome, Akavakaku! It's nice to have a sort of basic reference for the various Matoran/Toa personality types. There will always be an exception to the rule, of course, but I think this covers the bases nicely. A number of my fan-characters actually match up perfectly with the above descriptions of their corresponding elements, so this was a delight to read.  ^_^

Looking back at this, Chiara and Orde don't fit their elements' typical personalities at all. But that's ok, because we know they both have atypical personalities for their element, Chiara being unusually introverted and Orde being unusually rash.

This is extremely neat, but I hold these personality tests with a grain of salt.

While they all sound very good(exluding a few of the vague ones), I bet if the characters themselves took the test, they would all get something different from above.

Well, I got ISTJ. Ice. Which, funnily enough, is probably the element which I have the smallest number of sets of. Again, Ice isn't too surprising.
