Characters in the Dark

This is the profiles topic for City in the Dark. Post your profiles here and wait for them to be approved. Once they have been approved, dive into the game and start playing them.

Characters in this game can be any being living in the city of Katipo. This includes many MU species, so why not branch out and try playing a more unusual race? There are some that are not there, however. These include Makuta and Zyglak, among others.
(Toa are rare, though not endangered in this period of history, with a population of a few hundred scattered throughout the Matoran Universe. In an isolated, peaceful and secure city like Katipo, however, it is not realistic to have too many toa running around.)

To create a character, fill out this character profile and submit it for approval. This layout is only a suggestion, so feel free to change the format if you wish.

Name: Make it sound BIONICLE-ish
Gender: Male, Female, unknown, neither, somewhere inbetween.
Species: Something from the MU. Try not to make it overpowered or unlikely that they would live in a place like Katipo.
Group: If any.
Element: If applicable to the character’s species.
Kanohi: If applicable to the character’s species. Custom masks are OK if approved.
Other Powers: As applicable to the character’s species
Appearance: What do they look like? A MoC, drawing or description will do.
Equipment: What do they have with them?
Biography: About their life.
Personality: What are they like? How do they act?
Skills/Strengths: What are they good at?
Weaknesses: What are they bad at? What hurts them?

You cannot play as a canon character. Make your own.
There is no limit on how many characters each player can control.

Species Notes:

On the traits and abilities of the most common species in Katipo:
katipo_species_small.png

Matoran
Matoran are the smallest species in Katipo, standing a little below one bio (4.5 feet) in height, but they are also the most numerous. Each has a latent elemental trait that corresponds to their element, and they require kanohi to stay healthy, though they cannot use mask powers. Destined Matoran can transform into Toa.

Turaga
Turaga are the final stage of a Matoran’s evolution, and are just a bit taller than Matoran They are revered as elders because of their experience as Matoran, Toa and Turaga, and most other beings will take notice of their wisdom. They can use a weakened elemental power and noble kanohi.

Toa
Toa are the heroes of the Matoran universe, typically around 1.6 bio tall (7-7.5 feet). Each Toa has an elemental power and can use great kanohi. Most Toa serve the power of good, but this is not guaranteed.

Skakdi
Skakdi are the warlike species of Zakaz, who were a relatively peaceful race before being transformed by Makuta Spiriah around 72,000 BGC. They do not have the mental discipline to use kanohi powers, (though they can wear the masks) but instead they have a vision power, an elemental power (which can only be accessed when there is another friendly Skakdi nearby) and a third, individual ability. They are about the same height as toa.

Krekka’s Species (Ruri)
The Ruri, stand a modest eight feet in height – more than toa, but less than the other tall species. They are thickly built and by far the strongest of the common species in Katipo, though admittedly not the smartest. Each Rori has a power that acts upon their own body, granting them abilities such as flight, water-breathing, enhanced speed or senses, invisibility… the list goes on.

Vortixx
Vortixx are a tall race of beings (around 10 feet) hailing from Xia. They are known for their cunning and skill with technology, which has allowed them to create all sorts of amazing devices. They have no powers of their own, instead using their magical technologies.

Trinuma’s Species (Kodura)
Kodura stand about 2 bio (nine feet) tall and have horns on their heads. Many Kodura carry special kinetic tools which are unique to their race. The making of these is a closely-guarded secret, but when used, they can emit and manipulate kinetic energy. This can be used to allow the users to fly, fire bursts of force or manipulate objects to some degree. They are able to use great kanohi.

Hydraxon’s Species (Tarore)
Tarore are among the tallest of the common species, standing ten feet or taller. They are also the second strongest when unenhanced, with muscular physiques being the norm. They are renowned as skilled fighters and masters of weapons, though they do not have the same strength of magical power that some other species enjoy. The power of the Tarore lies in enchanting their weapons. Each member of this species can (in a lengthy, complicated process I will not describe here) forge a connection between a weapon and their own body to allow them to exchange attributes between them. This can only be done with one weapon at a time. Because each weapon is attuned to its owner, it cannot be used by anyone else. For details on the use of this power, see here. They cannot use kanohi.

Tobduk’s Species (Hirohi)
At ten feet tall on average, Hirohi are among the largest beings in Katipo. They have the ability to use great kanohi, and can gain physical strength by feeding on various feelings, both in themselves and those around them. There is much variation in which feelings give strength to a particular Hirohi. Examples include anger, sadness, joy, pain, excitement, fear, courage and confusion, though others are possible.

As with any RPG, there are some canon powers that cannot be used. These include:
The legendary masks, for obvious reasons.
The olmak, avohkii, krahkan, olisi and mask of elemental energy, all of which are unique. There are none of these masks in existence other than the ones shown in story the canon.
The elements of light and shadow, though some light or shadow-based powers may be acceptable.
The mohtrek, because infinite insta-armies are annoying.
The mask of undeath, because unkillable zombies are no fun.
The komau (great mask of bunnying), the sanok (great mask of auto-hitting) and the Mask of Clairvoyance (great mask of meta-gaming) are all off-limits. While it is possible to use these responsibly in an RPG, I’d rather save everyone the trouble of sorting out how they should and shouldn’t be used within good RPing etiquette.
The mask of conjuring, because it is ridiculously overpowered.

Staff Characters

Name: Tawhito
Species: Turaga
Gender: Male
Group: Nominal leader of the Katipo City Guard, leader of Katipo.
Element: Earth
Kanohi: Noble Rode – this mask allows him to detect any spoken (but not written) falsehoods and to detect (but not see through) all forms of magical concealment (invisibility, illusions, etc).
Appearance: Tawhito is a typical Turaga of earth. Short, hunched and slow but wise and thoughtful. Tawhito’s armour is black and dark grey, save for his heartlight, which is a dull red. His eyes shine bright green.
Equipment: Tawhito’s badge of office is a long, thin stone staff topped with a bright green jewel. The gem was something Tawhito acquired during his time as a Toa, and can emit a bright light when the holder desires it. If it was any other powers other than its ceremonial importance, they are unknown.
Biography: Tawhito gave up his toa power 60,000 years ago after helping to establish the city of Katipo and defeating a gigantic rahi that the first miners disturbed. The humungous beast was sedated and transported to the Metru Nui archives for further study (it was later re-awakened by Toa Hagah Kualus in the Dwellers in Darkness serial). Out of gratitude for his contribution, Turaga Tawhito was made the leader of the City in the Dark, as has kept the job ever since. He did step on a few toes in his rise to power, however, so not everybody was happy with his appointment.
Personality: Tawhito is a cautious leader who likes to give due consideration to any decision he makes. He does not often move quickly, but values patience almost as a fourth virtue. He greatly dislikes it when others are reckless or impulsive around him. He is loyal to the inhabitants of Katipo, and would never intentionally do something that would cause them harm.
Skills/Strengths: Tawhito is known for his sound judgement and genuinely caring about the people of his city. His honesty is well known throughout the city, and he is good at using his mask to detect falsehoods.
Weaknesses: Turaga Tawhito is a leader, not a fighter, a miner, an athlete, a chef or a singer. What he does, he does well, and leaves all those other things to people whose jobs they are.

Name: Karoro, alias Bo-Kal.
Species: Kodura (Trinuma’s species)
Gender: Male
Element: N/A
Kanohi: Mahiki
Group: Miners’ Corporation and The Hammer
Appearance: Imagine Trinuma, but with black armour instead of silver, and dark green where he had red. Change the mask to a mahiki and get rid of the ghostblasters too. There: that’s him. Nine feet tall, horned and muscular, Karoro is physically imposing, even if he isn’t the most handsome being in Katipo.
Equipment: Karoro uses the kinetic tools that are characteristic of his species. His main weapon is a protosteel sword, long but thin and decorated with engravings of nui-jaga running over the hilt and up the blade. Finally, he uses a device which channels the energy of weaken kanoka disks into a beam, allowing him to weaken objects or beings. This is particularly useful in the mines, where such devices are used to weaken areas of rock before they are harvested.
Biography: Karoro is one of the top-ranking individuals among the city’s miners, and one of the leaders of his species in Katipo. He was one of the people who were most influential in building the area’s mining community, which lead to the city’s foundation. He was tipped by many to become the leader of Katipo, but instead the job went to the newly transformed Turaga Tawhito. Now, millennia later, his resentment of the Turaga has outgrown his restraint, and he has formed The Hammer in an attempt to put more pressure on the old Turaga and seize power for himself.
Personality: Beings who have met Karoro might describe him as charismatic and intelligent, even cunning. This is the image he presents to the world, and as much as most people ever see of him. These traits have served him well in gaining and keeping his influential position in Katipo, but there is more to him. Those who know him well might describe him as unyielding and determined, to the point of ruthlessness, but even they might be surprised by his actions in leading The Hammer. In this context, he shows his true colours as downright vindictive, greedy and domineering.
Skills/Strengths: When he wants to be, Karoro is charismatic and silver-tongued, being able to talk his way into or out of almost any situation. His mind is sharp and swift, which helps with manipulating other people, and keeping his plans one step ahead of everyone else. Finally, he is a master illusionist, being able to use his mask to cast near-flawless images in a variety of situations.
Weaknesses: Karoro is vain, arrogant and greedy. Above all else, he desires power, so he hates situations where he is not in control, or doesn’t know what is happening.

Name: Orde
Species: Toa
Gender: Male
Element: Psionics
Kanohi: Kadin
Group: Katipo City Guard
Appearance: Orde is a tall toa in blue and gold armour, the colours of Psionics. His armour is smooth and sleek, giving the impression of water flowing over his body, but somehow keeping the shape of the tissues beneath. His golden eyes sometimes make him look a little grim, but not mean.
Biography: Orde was never a Matoran. Instead, he was created as a toa by the Great Beings before Mata Nui was launched, one of the first to come into existence. His first assignment was to use his mental powers to calm down the Zyglak, but it didn’t work out as planned. Instead, the Zyglak just got even more vicious and destructive.
Since then, Orde has travelled widely across the universe, protecting groups of Matoran who needed a Toa to get them through tough times. On one such journey, he visited Xia, where he acquired his rhotuka launcher. 10,000 years before the present time, he came to live in Katipo, stating a desire to live somewhere quiet for a while, and joined the city’s guard. He doesn’t talk much about the times before he entered the city, but a few other citizens know about his altercation with the Zyglak.
He was one of the last group to leave Katipo for trade, though he has been very quiet about it since he got back. Even since Turano’s disappearance, he has spent a lot of time alone in his house.
Personality: Orde is brave and strong-willed in the face of adversity, but otherwise tends to be more reclusive and quiet. If he feels that there is something he thinks needs to be said, he will happily say it even give a detailed speech on the topic, but otherwise he is just as happy with his own thoughts for company as conversing with other beings.
Equipment: Orde carries with him the standard spear and shield that identify him as a member of the Katipo Guard. He has a badge that also serves this purpose, and allows him access to Guard HQ and authority in the streets. Finally, he carries a small rhotuka launcher. His rhotuka project forcefields where they strikes a target.
Skills/Strengths: One of the first toa created in the Matoran Universe, Orde has been using and refining his psionic powers for longer than almost anyone else. He can read minds with ease, and pick out important memories or information within seconds, often without the targets noticing. Memory modifications are another skill of his. Not only is he good with his powers, but using them has taught him that in almost any circumstances, brains will beat brawn. According to this principle, he will apply knowledge and intelligence to any situation, rather than brute strength.
Weaknesses: Orde most often relies on his mental powers to get him through tough situations, so even with all his experience, he still isn’t the best melee fighter. He has an intense dislike of Zyglak.

Yes, Orde is here for a reason. What is that reason? Is it important to the plot? How does this connect to his other backstory? I’m not telling… yet. Maybe you should go and talk to this character, hint hint. ;)

Name: Turano
Species: Hirohi
Gender: Male
Element: N/A
Kanohi: Faxon
Group: Katipo City Guard
Appearance: Like others of his species, Turano has a lean and muscular physique. He is ten and a half feet tall, and decked out in strong armour with alternating plates of dark red and brown. His mask is in the shape pof a great arthron.
Biography: Turano has been around Katipo for about as long as anyone. When a few Matoran miners first prospected for gold here, he was one of the soldiers hired to protect them and their workers as they began a new mining venture. As the place grew and then the city was built, he stuck around, adapting to the changes as history progressed. When the Katipo City Guard was formed, he was the obvious choice for its leader, having shown so much dedication to the place in the past. Since then, he has been keeping the streets safe and even led some of the expeditions to the surface world. The last one of these took place just two months past. The rahi started behaving oddly two weeks later, and then three weeks after that, Turano did not turn up to Guard HQ one morning, and has not been seen since.
Personality: In keeping with his power, Turano is strong and courageous. He is dependable as a rock, and dedicated to Katipo and its people. When he disappeared, that was when people really got worried. While genuine and likeable, he does have a serious, no-nonsense attitude.
Equipment: Turano carries a long spear as tall as he is as well as a large shield. It is standard guard equipment, scaled up to match his species’ stature.
Skills/Strengths: Turano is a skilled warrior and excellent leader of other soldiers, being able to inspire loyalty and determination in others. His courage is evident in this and has never been questioned by another.
Weaknesses: Turano is at his most vulnerable when nobody around him is feeling courageous. Normally, he is surrounded by other members of the guard, so this is not a problem, but in the current circumstances, the city’s population is becoming fearful, and it is cutting into his supply.

More to be added as they are revealed.

Name: Tarua
Gender, Species, Element: Female Ta-Toa
Group: Katipo City Guard
Kanohi: Mask of Intangibility, allowing the user to control their density to become intangible to dodge attacks or pass through walls, or simply less visible. Can only be used on oneself and the weaponry, armor, etc. that one is directly touching or wearing.
Appearance: Tarua's frame is mainly a dark red, with grey armor and some orange highlights. Of note is her average stature, slim build but obviously strong arms, and deep green eyes, matching her heartlight. She appears to wear knee protection, extra, orange pieces of armor over her knees, with similar plates on her shoulders. Her Kanohi is shaped like a Great Huna, with no visor, just an opening showing her eyes. Her armor is often slightly covered in charcoal dust, and she wears a scarf draped loosely around her neck whose original color has been totally covered and masked by the black soot.
Equipment: Tarua carries the typical shield, but in favor of the spear normally used by the Guard she carries a staff, specially designed to amplify and focus her elemental powers, giving her more control over flame and heat and allowing easier completion of feats of absorption or radiation. Atop the staff is a heatstone/lightstone combination, which often burns with flames when Tarua holds it.
Biography: Tarua hails from the harsh mountains of the Trem Krom Peninsula, where she worked for many years as a lone blacksmith living in the mountains, mining her own ores, smelting them and working them into tools, armor, and weaponry. She became a Toa once day when one of the Toa of the region had decided to spread his powers among the populace, and so she happened to come across one of the stones. It was activated at her forge, due to her connection with the flames and the Stone in her grasp, and she became a Toa. This did not have too much impact on her life for a time, as she continued with her work and forged her own staff that she now carries, but eventually she left her forge to go and find somewhere to protect. Tarua has always known Toa to be protectors, and so being a Toa herself now, she would protect. Katipo was simply a place that she stumbled upon, the caves seeming familiar to her after working in her mines for so long. She joined the Guard in the end, drawn to being a protector, but has set up a smithy where the Ta-Toa spends much of her time, fixing other guard's weapons and making more tools for the miners.
Personality: Tarua is friendly enough, but not much of a talker. Her time alone has made her consider words unneeded much of the time, and so she only speaks when she feels it is needed. She is also very in tune with her element, but another side of it, unlike the brash, uncontrolled side other Ta-Toa show, like Tahu. Hers is the more peaceful side of fire, the hearth, the useful flame, always there and providing light and comfort. Hers is the flames of the forge, hot beyond any normal flame but controlled, focused, purposefully fanned into something that can change even the hardest of materials. Like that she is a constant, always around and willing to give comfort to those who need it. She is protection, light in a sense, standing against the darkness. Her willpower and words, when she speaks, can forge one's will into something stronger, reinforce resolve through her controlled and yet burning passion.
Skills/Strengths: Physically Tarua is quite strong, but in terms of melee combat she is totally and completely unskilled. Instead she prefers to use her shield and element to battle and defend herself, showing masterful skill over flaming bursts and heat waves. Her staff is her conduit, making her control brighter and stronger, while allowing precise attacks that can slip between two allies to strike the unnoticed enemy.
Weaknesses: As mentioned before, her melee combat is untrained and uncoordinated, other than in shield work. For all her heat, she has times when she burns out and just finds herself despairing, searching in the dark for a match that she can use to light her flame once more. That's why she left her forge in the mountains the first time, she felt she wasn't doing anything of worth and eventually discovered the match of helping others to relight her spirit. Lastly, even through she's inspirational, her social skills are quite lacking otherwise and she appears to have trouble making close friends.
Name: Eplou/The Muaka

Gender, Species: Male Ruri

Group: Miner's Corporation/The Hammer

Other Powers: As with all Ruri, Eplou has a power that affects him, and his is simple. He has greatly enhanced endurance, allowing him to just keep going and going and going on whatever he's doing. Sleep is less of a necessity for him, along with resting periods. He does, however, require more food and water than most.

Appearance: Eplou is a standard Ruri, nothing much puts him out of the crowd. Blank red eyes, which are often an act, large hands, dull white and dark green armor, wide feet, he's average. When he's in his Muaka persona, however, he dons a grey, fanged helmet with small eyeholes, grey gloves with more steel spikes in the knuckles, and even will wear a large, grey cloak to hide himself even more.

Equipment: Eplou carries with him a few things. Mainly is his mining kit, pickaxe, smaller chisels, which he uses for his day job as a miner, one of the lower upon low, who's doing the dirty work, and then he has a helmet with fangs that covers most of his face and spiked gauntlets. This is his Muaka gear, what he wears when the Hammer needs him to do some dirty work, distraction, or 'clean-up'.

Biography: All he's ever known is mining. Mine this, mine that, mine all day, everyday. His patience is not the best, so by the time the Hammer even began to form he had a record of lashing out at people who rubbed him the wrong way. The choice was simple for him, and the rules were easy. Follow orders, do what you're told, and you'll be able to do so much more than just mine. And so far, he's enjoyed it. Mining was boring. Smashing heads is less so.

Personality: Eplou is a simple Ruri, but more intelligent than the average. He has enough intelligence to be bored of doing the same thing over and over, and with that is a lack of patience. He's willing enough to follow orders, but he'll often give it his own spin, sometimes quite literally. Influence someone's decisions? Alright, he'll go 'have a chat' with the person in question, but don't blame him if they're found on a roof somewhere. He finds amusement easy to come by, as long as it doesn't involve mining. If there's one thing he can barely stand, it's mining. He's done enough of it by now.

Skills/Strengths: Being a Ruri, Eplou is good at mining, roughing people up, and surprisingly enough blending into a crowd. There's enough of them around, and enough ways to hide his equipment that he can slip away unnoticed enough that he hasn't gotten caught yet. He's strong, as is expected, and due to his power can continue to fight long after the opponent is exhausted.

Weaknesses: All things considered, he's still below average compared to everyone in intelligence, he's not all that fast, and he;s not likely to do something totally on his own. Following orders is what he does, without orders he just exists, either mining or wandering around waiting.

Tarua looks great. I'll enjoy interacting with this character, I think. Would you like her to be one of the guards who went on the trip above?

On the mask of intangibility, I think it should only allow for, well, intangibility. Going the other way as well would make it a mask of density control. I will allow her to extend the intangibility to objects she is holding, though, not just herself.

Eplou is also approved.

Vosa - I'm not approving him yet, since his backstory doesn't seem very consistent. He's well-tempered and nice, but has uncontrollable anger? He's a full-blown, incurable hordika, but somehow not rahi-brained? Those seem like contradictions. Also, could you answer how this monster toa that lashed out at anything became a detective?

Yeah, OK. That doesn't contradict itself anymore, but I'm still wondering about the incurable hordika thing. The only one of them we saw in canon was the Dark Hunter, Savage. Here's how his mutation turned out, from BS01: "Due to his animalistic mutation, Savage frequently gets Rahi-like urges and is seized by madness. When this occurs, he is locked in a specialized cell so as to prevent damage to himself, others, or the building." That isn't the sort of being who could live in a peaceful city like Katipo and have a normal job.

Vosa seems to have a lot more control of himself than that. So how's this? Soon after his mutation, when he came to Katipo, he got hold of some sort of medicine that will forestall some of the effects of the hordika venom, but not cure it. That way he keeps his mind the way you have him, but stays in the physical form of an hordika with all of the accompanying abilities. The best of both worlds. Having to take the potion every few hours to avoid going into an unstoppable rage could be a cool thing to write about as well.

Thoughts?

So, you want us to seek mysteries do you? challenge accepted

Name: Wherya

Gender: Female

Species: Toa

Group: Unaffiliated

Element: Earth

Kanohi: Great Roku, Mask of Memory

sml_memory.pngsml_memory_2.pngsml_memory_3.png

- Allows the wielder to clearly relive past events or remember what has been forgotten.

Appearance: Tall, sleek and with softly placed features, Wherya is a fit, alluring woman whose most noticeably quality is her unusual mask. She can appear almost a bit… fragile, or delicate, but is in fact quite the opposite. Often hidden behind a dark trenchcoat, Wherya is mostly black, with purple mask and highlights lining her figure, and with dark green eyes and heartlight.

Equipment: Cigarettes, notepads, throwing knifes, grapnel gun, silver/acid tongue

Biography: Wherya has always been curios; ever since she can remember she’s been running around sniffed out secrets and making guesses. She’s always had an attention to detail and a quick eye for trouble. It got her into more than a few jams when she was younger, though when she became a Toa she took it as her calling to seek the truth, no matter what it took to get it. She now runs a Private Eye bureau in Katipo.

Personality: A Woman of Vices, Wherya is a bit of a hedonist, indulging herself in a lot of life’s sultrier pursuits both on and off the job. She’s a night owl with a loner streak, a persona that can be either charming or nasty depending on her goals, and possesses a certain knack for wit and a capacity for heavy drinking. Wherya enjoys socializing as an exercise for her deductive skills, and seeks the truth for the satisfaction it gives her. Relationships don’t come easy to her, but when they happen she’s the most loyal companion you can have, just don’t expect her to give you an arm to cry on, probably more like a slap across the face and a command that you pull yourself together.

Skills/Strengths: Deduction and psychology, elemental manipulation, night vision, fistfighting and knifework, good strength and dexterity.

Weaknesses: Sensitivity to light, disregard for own or others’ safety in pursuit of the truth, loner streak, many vices.

Very well then, Vosa approved!

Wherya approved, but I'm a little wary of that custom mask. Perhaps it could work like memory storage for a Tarore? The users can place a memory into it for storage, while forgetting it themselves. While stored, it does not degrade or become fuzzy with time, and the user can recall it to mind whenever they wish, reliving the memory fresh in their mind as though it had only just happened. Using the mask a lot would allow the user to store incredible amounts of information, almost becoming a walking library. Want to know about a particular subject? Just recall that book you read ten thousand years ago, and it will be a fresh as when you looked up from the pages. This recall would only work for the being who placed the memory into storage, even if they gave the mask to someone else. Memory sharing, I think, is a bit too much.

And so many toa already! They're supposed to be rare, people. Honestly, I give you detail on all these other species and still all you want to play is toa. Mutter mutter mutter...

Hehe, don't worry Lorax, I'll make sure your other species get some love too, count on it.

Anyway, about the mask, the whole idea of it is that it's supposed to give Wherya the opportunity to look back on any scene in her own life, not necessarily store information. It's to look back and catch the small details, something about how the suspect worded or carried themselves, something she heard that she couldn't make out at the time, or something maybe she saw or rather didn't see. See where I'm going with this.

I wouldn't mind simply discarding the "remembering the forgotten" thing if that would make it work better.

Name: Kriop (KREE-op)

Gender: Male

Species: Toa

Group: Miners’ Corperation

Element: Earth

Kanohi: Mahiki, Great mask of Illusion

Other Powers: Earth elemental power

Appearance: Kriop is clad in black armor, with silver joints and a silver Mahiki. He has clawed hands, but suitable for gripping a miner's pick. Kriop is tall for most Onu-Toa, mainly because isn’t naturally hunched over.

Equipment: Kriop carries with him a lightweight pickaxe, which can be used as a tool or a weapon.

Biography: Kriop has been a miner for as long as he can remember. He started very inexperienced, but slowly made his way up. He lies in-between the average and the poor workers on the chain, but his needs don’t require large amounts of dough.

Personality: Kriop is one of those miners who stays low and tries not to attract attention to himself. He thinks of the richer miner workers as extremely greedy.

Skills/Strengths: Kriop is mentally stable and very patient. He tends to mainly rely on strategy.

Weakness(es): Kriop is not very athletic when it comes down to it. He can swing a pickaxe, but he can’t fight for very long and isn’t particularly strong.

Name: Ahktu(It's my self-MOC)

Gender: Male

Species: A Mimicran. A fanon species in between a Toa and Turaga in height.

Group: Miner's Corperation

Element: N/A

Kanohi: A Great Arthron that he has learned to use to probe rocks for structural weaknesses.

Other Powers: When is direct eye contact with a being, he can copy one of their natural powers. He can store this for as long as he likes, and previous powers are erased when a new one is copied, requiring a recopy to use again.

Appearance: He is somewhat taller then a Turaga, with a metallic chestplate. His legs are slightly short, and he wields two large claws similar to Piruk and Onua Mata's. A tube goes from a small container on his back into a hole on his mask.

Equipment: Two very sharp claws, his Kanohi Arthron, breathing container, and a Level 8 Regeneration disk. The disk has been used so many times, however, that the power level has faded to level 7.

Biography: Ahktu was once a simple villager trying to carve out a living in a peaceful village. However, during a long trip to buy some equipment, he very nearly fell into a vat of chemicals being transported on the ship. In fact, he touched it for a few seconds, which gave him his breathing problem. Once in Katipo, he received word that his village had been decimated, and ended up living in Katipo. This was a long time ago.

Personality: Sometimes energetic, he has a habit of daydreaming and speaks in technical language.

Skills/Strengths: He is good at using and repairing machinary, and has learned to use his Arthron to sense structural integrity in rock and other things. His arms are strong from lots of digging.

Weaknesses: He is not good with Rahi, and is often afraid of them. He will choke if his tube is removed.

Alright, Lorax. Here ya go. B-)

Name: Kareva

Gender: Female

Species: Tarore

Group: Katipo Miners’ Corporation

Element: N/A

Other Powers: N/A

Kanohi: N/A

Appearance: Standing a full 11 feet in height, Kareva is a tall, muscly woman buried in armor, dirt and grime. Beneath the armored visage of her round, featureless helmet glows a pair of dark green eyes with wild heat, and corded muscle runs the length of her form beneath her armor, stopping at the elbow on her left arm, where cold, efficient machinery cuts it off to form a three-pronged clawed metal appendage. She’s primarily colored black underneath navy blue armor and helmet, and has dark green eyes and heartlight.

Equipment: First and foremost her Earth Claw: a multi-purpose mechanical digging arm that can switch between different modes depending on the task at hand. This arm can be used in battle quite adequately as well, and it is attuned to her as its owner, allowing her to distribute her attributes between the claw and herself.

Biography: Kareva has always been a laborer, in different fashions, and sometimes a guard or warrior as well to break up the monotony. She’s originally from somewhere far to the South, and arrived in Katipo looking for work and (presumably) a life away from home for unexplained reasons. She prefers to avoid talking about it, and is nowadays a Demolitions Expert for the Miners’ Corporation.

Personality: Gruff, practical and quiet, Kareva is a sturdy pillar of steady work towards a goal. It must be said, she rather enjoys her job. Hard work, explosions and yelling at the top of your lungs is her kind of thing, which comes to show whenever she’s off duty. She knows how to relax like the best of them, with a cold beer and a good meal, and she’s as happy as can be when her simple needs are met. Disturb her simple lifestyle, however, and you’re in for a world of hurt.

Skills/strengths: As a demolitions expert she know a lot about explosives, and she’s also got plenty experience with more menial mining tasks, which she’s often been put to due to her massive strength. She’s a decent fighter as well, and can be trusted to help beat back Rahi assaults should it be needed.

Weaknesses: Mining is a noisy job, and she’s been doing it for a while, as a result her hearing’s begun to suffer, and she can’t hear all that well. She’s also not very subtle or appealing, in either sense of the word.

-

Name: Gallith

Gender: Male

Species: Kodura

Group: The Hammer

Element: N/A

Kanohi: Great Arthron, Mask of Sonar

Other Powers: N/A

Appearance: Tough, burly, tall, and also ancient. Gallith is a veteran of many battles, and it shows on the many scratches, dents and gashes that litter his body, but also in his muscled frame, foreboding stance and jagged, almost warlike look. The most striking of his injuries is his missing eye (right), covered by a black glass plate in the masks's eyehole, with a few small cracks spreading out from it it. Gallith is colored primarily dark green, with black accents on his shoulders, abdomen, legs and hands while his mask is completely black. His eye and heartlight are colored lime green, and his Arthron is shaped like a Great Pakari.

Equipment: 1x Kinetic Emitter: A weapon exclusive to Gallith's race, allowing him to project kinetic energy bursts or use it to achieve flight. This weapon takes the shape of a cylindrical, rod-like device mounted on his left arm.

1x Protosteel Battleaxe: Extraordinarily well-crafted, this favored instrument of destruction features perfect balance, rugged full-tang construction, and a wicked breaching spike opposite the heavy, razor-honed blade. Its handle, bound with leather for a sure grip, is studded with a pommel at the end to ensure all-around lethal efficiency.

Biography: Gallith's been around, to put it simply. He was originally a member of the Hand of Artakha, tasked with overseeing the universe in its humble beginnings, and was instrumental in those crucial early years of the Matoran Universe before the Toa took over the role as protectors of the Matoran. Gallith actually left the hand before it disbanded due to not feeling up to “babysitting weaklings” and went off to find better work, taking up mercenary work and bounty hunting to make a living. He’s fought on Zakaz, on Karzahni and on in the ring on Stelt, he’s a warrior from an era that’s meeting its end, and war is his business. In Katipo he’s now working for The Hammer.

Personality: Gallith is and has always been a straightforward and practical man. If something doesn't work, change approach and try again. He's persistent, enduring and weathered, but not jaded, by his millennial struggle to keep the universe, himself or innocents in one piece. He's attained a lot of experience, and won't hesitate to share his exploits, and keeps an unrelenting spirit, dark sense of humor and brutally honest attitude with it. Gallith respects strength, and lives by the “might makes right” philosophy.

Skills/Strengths: Gallith possesses no natural powers, but is physically very though, able to both take and dish out a great deal of punishment. He's also quite agile, and has finely attuned senses and physical coordination.

Weaknesses: Gallith is not a tactician, and his damaged sight and advanced age hamper him a bit as well. He may sometimes be a little too blunt, and is prone to act a little condescending to the less experienced Hammers.

Name: Kware (KWAH-ray)

Gender: Male

Species: Hirohi (Tobduk's Species)

Group: None.

Element: None.

Kanohi: Kanohi Shelek (Mask of Silence)

Other Powers: Like all of his species, Kware's physical strength can be increased by feeding on certain feelings. In Kware's case, he is strengthened by love, whether it is the purest and sincerest form of love, or the darker, less wholesome form. However, he gains the most strength from mutual love, the kind found in a personal and intimate relationship with another being.

Appearance: Despite standing at an even ten feet, Kware is surprisingly gentle in appearance. His solid black body is strong and toned, but not thick. He wears simple black armor that covers the majority of his body, with gray-blue
highlights along the edges. His mask is the same gray-blue as the highlights on his armor. His eye color is amber.

Equipment: For melee combat, Kware carries a spiked mace made by a Fe-Toa he had met many years before. The effectiveness of this weapon increases with Kware's strength. For ranged combat, each piece of forearm armor has four panels, one on top of his arm, another on the bottom, and the other two on either side. These panels can raise at will and together fire a high-powered, concentrated blast of kinetic energy. His lower leg armor is similar, but these emitters are intended to allow Kware to jump up to four times his normal height, though he rarely uses them to jump this high as the cool-down is proportional to the power output. These Koduran devices were gifts from his wife, Teota.

Biography: Kware's start was with a roving band of his fellow Hirohi. They were a sadistic bunch, getting their kicks from inflicting pain and misery upon whomever they wished. Kware was an outcast of sorts, because unlike the others, he did not derive his strength from such negative feelings. In fact, he was long thought an anomaly among his species, as they were convinced he didn't have a "feeling." They tolerated his presence simply because he was dangerous despite this. Kware eventually left this group and took to traveling the various islands on his own.

Kware met Teota on one of the Southern Islands. She was being pursued by another Kodura who believed Teota was madly in love with him but was unwilling to admit it. When the Kodura finally caught up with Teota and realized she did not love him, he tried to kill her. Teota easily dispatched the Kodura. Having witnessed the whole event, Kware felt the first twinges of energy begin to strengthen his body. Curious, he approached Teota and introduced himself. The two quickly found they had much in common, and took to traveling together. During these travels, Kware finally found his "feeling": love. The two eventually married. They gathered much wealth, and when they heard of the underground city of Katipo, they traveled there in hopes of settling down.

Personality: Kware leans toward being chaotic neutral. He is willing to hurt or kill whomever gets in his way and steal or exploit if absolutely necessary, but he is not inherently evil. He doesn't hurt or kill for the fun of it. He protects those he is close to, no matter how few they may be. Those who revel in excess and laud it over those who are not as well off repulse Kware. Otherwise, Kware is calm, even-tempered, and even moderately charming.

Skills/Strengths: Kware is physically strong, and even more so when he can draw on his own love for Teota and her love for him. He can also draw some strength from the love others express, but it is not nearly as empowering. His extensive training with his kinetic emitters allows him to use them efficiently and accurately. His armor is strong but not impenetrable. He can ignore moderate amounts of pain. He is not affected by verbal derision or abuse, as he cares little about others' views of him.

Weaknesses: Teota is by far his greatest weakness, as she is the one thing in the world he cares about above all else. He has also come to depend on her both physically and emotionally; thus, in her absence, he is not quite as strong as he used to be, nor is he as mentally sound. While he does not border on insane, his mood is darker and his tolerance for others is lower. He is also more prone to violence.

I may create a profile for Teota later, but I haven't decided if I want to include her yet. It kind of depends on how I feel like playing this, and how things develop.

The power of love? Wonderful! He's all good, apart from one thing.

Change the mask and Kware is good to go.

I knew there was a reason I initially decided against the Sanok. I guess that's what happens when you start a profile one day and finish it the next. I couldn't remember why I hadn't chosen the Sanok, which would work better with Kware, so I changed it to the Sanok. Anyway, it's fixed now.

Name: Kharadak, the Beast in the Shadows

Gender: Male

Species: Skakdi

Group: Those exiled into the outer tunnels.

Element: Earth

Kanohi: N/A

Other Powers: Vision Power: Ability to instill pure fear in those whom he gazes upon. Other Power: Hypersensitivity - allows Kharadak to trade in higher brain functions for heightened instinctual and physical senses for a short time; he will basically become the equivalent of a hypersensitive Rahi for a short while, before succumbing to unconsciousness. He will wake minutes or hours later, with little to no knowledge of what occurred in his 'Rahi state.'

Appearance: Matte-black spine and armor over dull-grey limbs and muscles. His typical, toothy visage is twisted into a permanent and threatening grimace.

Equipment: A single, long, curved knife.

Biography: Kharadak does not remember how or why he has been exiled to the outer tunnels. He assumes that this is due to one of his Hypersensitive moments, but the details of what happened are unclear to him. In fact, he tries to distance himself from attempting to figure out the 'whys' and 'hows' and instead concentrates on what will happen in the future, although he has no plans on returning to the Concourse.

Personality: Kharadak is plagued by multiple personalities continuously shouting at him inside his head. Sometimes, he's able to quiet them through will alone, but other times, they begin screaming at him and tempting him to act or think certain ways. The only way to get pure peace and quiet is to induce Hypersensitivity once in a while. It is unclear which of the personalities is truly his own, if one should even exist. He is utterly unpredictable, dangerous, and perhaps even xenophobic.

Skills/Strengths: Staying physically quiet, hiding in the shadows, seeing in the dark and hunting his 'prey.' He is strong, but not fast, and has a keen sense of smell.

Weaknesses: Kharadak has an intense hatred of light. He is paranoid and schizophrenic, and most likely psychotically insane. His fractured personality often leads to self-destructive behavior.

This'll be fun.

Kreeuh... Now this is an interesting idea and I like having a new species, but I'm going to say no. Why? Well, this rahi would know what had made the rahi go all strange, having been affected itself. This is not something that any characters can know yet. That information is safely wrapped up in my plot sheets, and if any PCs went around blabbing about it that would kinda break the whole mystery thing going on.

So nice try, but sadly no.

Would an Av-Toa be accepted?

Read the rules, mate. They're right there in this topic:

As with any RPG, there are some canon powers that cannot be used. These include:
...
The elements of light and shadow, though some light or shadow-based powers may be acceptable.

So light maybe, but a toa no. This game sticks close to canon, and there was only ever one toa of light. That and the shadow leech hasn't been invented yet, so no shadow-toa either.

In fact, I'm reluctant to go for any toa at all. They are really quite rare and powerful beings who tend to show up where there is excitement and adventure, ready to combat evil. Katipo hasn't seen any of that in many thousands of years, so it doesn't make sense for a lot of toa to live here and we've already got a few.

Sure. Maybe instead of being the mutated rahi, the character could be an underground farmer who wants to know what's going on with his animals. That way you could still do things with the unknown rahi-stuff, but it wouldn't break the game.

Name: Kaltok
Gender: Male
Species: Tobduk's species, I forgot the name.
Group:The Guard. Nearly no one likes him, and most are afriad of him due to his loose-cannon personality and his all-too-willingness to use his warhammer. They keep him around because he is extremely useful in fending off the larger, more agressive Rahi.
Element: N/A
Kanohi:The Mask of Storage. It give the user the ability to open a portal within two yards of them to a pocket demension where items not exceeding half a ton may be kept. Sapient beings cannot go there. Kaltok keeps two warhammers and a Hagah Plasma Cannon there.
Other Powers: He can draw power from the excited feelings of himself and other beings.
Appearance: Tall, but not bulky. He is very strong nonetheless. His armor is mostly black... and very very dark grey.
Equipment: He has some rope and a grappling hook in his mask's storage space. Oh, and he also has a warhammer, Hagah Plasma Cannon, and a few other weapons.
Biography: He showed up one day. When questioned about his past, he is known to give entirely inconsistant answers.
Personality: He is weapons-crazed, and rather insane in general. Occasionally, an alternate personality will surface and take control. This personality is very reserved and quiet.
Skills/Strengths: Smashing things, breaking things, beating up crazy Rahi, scaring people, getting people mad at him.
Weaknesses: He is bad at diplomacy, and when faced with a calm, rational atmosphere he loses strength. Additionally, he is extremely reckless.
His alternate personality is relatively bad at combat and easily beaten in a fight

Nice! I've just got a couple of questions:

He showed up one day on a boat.

Boat? We're kio below the Southern Continent here, two weeks' journey from the nearest ocean. How on earth did he manage to arrive on a boat?

He can draw power from the 'crazed' or irrational feelings of himself and other beings.

I think this is a bit too general to be a good Hirohi "feeling". Most feelings are irrational, after all, so this could encompass almost anything. I get what you're going for, though. Perhaps aggression or excitement would work better?

Sorry, I must have gotten mixed up. He just arrived then. :P

What I mean is the sort of 'oh whatever', or battle rage, or something. Excitement would work though. Editing.
