Back in April, Toys 'R' Us had a promotion where you could build and take home a model of Emmet's car from The LEGO Movie. BZPower Member BlueFire was kind enough to get an extra copy for us to review. Read on to check out this little set and see if it's something you should add to your collection! We've also got a polybag giveaway if you watch our video review!

Nice review and a cool little set (finally a free promotional set with useful pieces in even numbers!). You didn't take a picture of the instructions from straight-on where people would be able to build this themselves though, but if anyone is in need of those, here.

Question for Black Six: Is that the LG G Watch on your right wrist? :o It kind of looks like it.

This looks an awfully lot like the Smart Car released about 5 years ago. Hmm...

Regardless, it is a cool design and a great chance to get that car again!

That's because Emmet's car in the movie is mostly identical to the Small Car set. I'm glad they did the building event anyway, for those of us who missed out on that set originally (and because the Small Car is still a pretty solid set, especially for a set that size).

I genuinely thought they simply reused the model without any modifications for the movie. :P

 Always adored that little scene in the beginning with Emmet's Car. Great to see it was a set, even if it was only a promotional little thing. I wish I had one ;-;

Great review BTW, really nice.

I haven't watched the movie all the way through since it left theatres, but I believe the one in the movie had side mirrors (not identical to those on the Toys R Us model, but similar). Checking images on Brickset, the Small Car set seems to have no side mirrors at all.

I know, but I didn't remember that detail when I watched the movie. ^_^

To be fair, lots of things had details in the movie that were "left out," so to speak, of the sets. I noticed this when realizing that Metalbeard had a lot more detail and pieces in the movie than he does as a set. I suspect many other movie-to-set things did too, which is probably what inspired that "LEGO Movie-accurate Micro Manager MOC" posted on the front page a few weeks ago.

I built a movie-accurate Metalbeard in LDD, or at least as close as I could get. A lot of his changes seem to be either replacing pieces with pieces that either add more stability or are less dated, or changing the color of a piece to reduce the number of different pieces in the set. Its certainly not as many changes as the downsizing of the Construct-O-Mech and the Sea Cow. (Although, one thing I have to wonder is if at one point, the Metalbeard set was mostly how he looked in the movie, and late changes to his design in the movie resulted in some of the discrepancies?)

On an interesting note, I haven't noticed any differences between Benny's Spaceship in the movie and the one in the set, which makes me think there may have been some push for consistency between the set and the movie (moreso than in the other sets).

I'm really curious to find out how many of the sets were made after the movie was mostly completed and how many were made before, helping inspire what their movie counterparts looked like. I suspect some things, like the 2-in-1 sets, were requested from the set designers and then placed in the movie.  Things like Metalbeard and the Construction Mech might even have been made in conjunction with what the set designers could do (to make it a realistic price point) and what they movie makers wanted (something more bulky, larger and impressive).

Its kind of weird to me that this polybag doesn't have a Emmet minfig to go with it. But a small promotional set by itself, I find it to be really neat. I actually kind of like the flying car a little more than the regular one, but that is just me.

Thanks for the review!

The lack of a minifig is partly because it's NOT a polybag. These Toys R Us building events involve lining up to receive a small ziplock bag and then fill it with the required parts, which are laid out in trays marked with the quantity of each part you need. It's somewhat unsurprising that minifigs aren't among those parts, given their higher cost and the easy opportunity to grab more of certain parts than the model specifies.
