Looking at Official Topics

Recommended Posts

Hey,

So I was thinking that it might be a good idea to take a look at the COT official topics system. I'd like your input! The big question here is "Do we still need official topics?"

The original point of official topics in this forum was an attempt to condense popular subjects into a single, more easily managed thread. (They also used to have a spiffy special indicator on the subforum index.) With today's quieter COT, perhaps this herding of discussion is no longer needed.

The advantages of the system:

  • Official topics can be revived. This means that discussion is contained in a single thread, which might be useful for members interested in the topic.
  • That's really the only advantage I see; feel free to point out more.

The disadvantages of the system:

  • Approval process. It's likely a nuisance for members who are just looking to discuss a topic without any hassle.
  • Confusion. This relates to the approval process: I've seen many unapproved "official" topics pop up.
  • Finally, it doesn't really prevent duplicate topics from being posted.

Note that if official topics were to be discontinued, nothing would really change for existing topics. I'd just go and remove "Official" from the topic title and let things continue as normal.

Thoughts?

We could just do away with the approval process and leave the official-ization of topics up to COT staff. Topic gets enough interest? Make it official, simple as that. The process of making a topic an official one is one of those vestigial bits of BZPower that should be done away with regardless of what is done with the official topic system as a whole.

There are probably a few official topics in the list that are, for all intents and purposes, dead. Should I go and take out "official" from their titles?

If "official" status becomes something more dynamic and dependent on topic activity, it doesn't seem like there would be a need for the status at all, especially with the recent-ish increased revival limits.

I dunno; I'm kind of leaning toward doing away with the system. I also agree about getting rid of the approval system in either case, even though it would apply only to games in the absence of official topics.
