The problem of the Kingdom

Recommended Posts

The Kingdom is my favourite Bionicle story, but it just doesn't make sense.

Matoro hesitates in pursuing Voya Nui and doesn't get into Karda Nui, I get that. What about the rest of the Toa Mahri? Jaller was about to go nova because they were losing the battle, remember? There's no way Matoro could have gotten back to the battlefield in time to prevent Jaller from going nova, and even then he alone wouldn't have been able to swing the tides (no pun intended).

Let's assume that somehow Matoro did save the day. So the universe has to evacuate. I can accept that. How did the Toa Mahri get to Metru Nui? The Great Spirit Robot is 40,000,000 feet tall. Voya, Mahri, and Karda Nui are at its belly; Metru Nui is at its head. That's a journey of thousands of miles, at least half the diameter of the Earth! Yet somehow Hewkii was able to join Pohatu (who would have had a considerably easier time due to Artakha's teleportation abilities) during the evacuation to die.

And what about the whole issue of air? Matoro never used the Mask of Life, so the Toa Mahri never became amphibious. What's Jaller doing at the great furnace without some kind of breathing apparatus? Shouldn't they all have suffocated?

That's been brought up before, and the simple solution was suggested that the Ignika acted. It wouldn't magically exit the scene just because he didn't pass VN. It's possible it was moved already enough by Matoro's willingness to sacrifice himself so that it made the choice to be more involved, which in the main universe happens almost immediately after this point, but a little later than would be needed here. And would telepathically contact Jaller, or simply intervene and stop the nova or otherwise affect Jaller so it wouldn't be destructive. It could also teleport them all to Metru Nui, and make them amphibious.

All that implies is that Matoro no longer has it. Makuta is speaking 10,000 years after the fact, so surely you would expect him to use past tense? :P

The Kingdom has no problems.

All hail Turaga Takanuva.

All hail the light.

Praise the sun.

Feed the Piraka.

But seriously though, the only "problem" I find interesting in the Kingdom storyline is how Takanuva's destiny changed from helping with a civil war, to pulling of a Moses.

Well, it's long been known destiny is adaptive. The Core Dimension seems to be defined as the place where most destinies do happen (we just don't know all of them, or all the details, beforehand). But since the alternate universes by definition are places where things are different, those destinies can fail there (a few apparently fail in the core one too, but it seems to be rare there). Then, destiny probably adapts.

Personally I suspect Takanuva's destiny has always been a major damage-control one, though. The ramblings of Builder implied that, and it seems unlikely the GBs intended his destiny to be about that civil war. So it sounds more like that was where he was going to end up helping in a major way that would enable him to become a Turaga. So, his destiny, if this thinking is right, might be more adaptable than most.

I mean, if we want to ignore the fact that the first half of that post was a joke, then yeah I guess you can say that the fact that their kingdomis also crumbling into the ocean is also a problem. I just enjoyed the story because of the social harmony.

Then why not teleport Matoro to the core?

why not teleport Matoro to the core?

Good question, though it's really two questions, one with an easy answer, the other not so simple (and FTR, the question doesn't disprove the theory offered earlier, since Ignika teleportation abilities are canon). It couldn't teleport him directly into Karda Nui, as far as we know, as there were shields blocking teleportation to and from it. (Although Artakha had a way to do it that circumvented that, which he used to send the Toa Nuva there, but we don't know how that works.) However, that still leaves the question of why it didn't teleport him ahead of Voya Nui.

One possible answer is it might not be able to teleport itself. But I think it's more that the Ignika doesn't normally want to do such things. Having the power and having the motivation are two separate things. And given that Jaller survived long enough in the canon universe to be rescued by the Ignika, it could take the same timespan in the Kingdom one. So, it could decide to act once Voya Nui was already in place and it was too late. Then act in the only way left -- help salvage the situation.
