July Flickr Contest Underway

Recommended Posts

Over in BZPower's Flickr Group Tufi Piyufi has kicked off the BZPower Flickr Contest - July 2014. You've got until Monday, July 21st at 11:59 PM Eastern to build a sweet constraction MOC and submit it to the group. The winner gets a copy of 70209 CHI Mungus, a story about their MOC on the front page of BZPower, and their MOC will be used as the banner for the Flickr group! What are you waiting for? Get building!

I've never entered any of the Flickr contests. I guess the prizes can be cool, but building contests as broad as this just don't motivate me quite like ones with a particular theme (and I haven't even entered any of those in a long time). Generally, I build (or draw) to challenge myself in specific ways that don't hinge on what other people will think. I don't mean for that to sound pretentious — it's not like I think other people's opinions aren't valid or important — but I feel like trying to compete with the top MOCists here on something as broad as making a "sweet constraction MOC" would just be setting myself up for frustration and disappointment.

There have been, since the inception of the BBC Contests, people who tell us we should have more free-build contests. The Flickr contests are the venue for them, and the BBC and SBC contests are the place for people who prefer to follow a particular theme. This allows us to do our best to make both sides happy. :)

Understood. I'm not saying they shouldn't exist. Just that they don't really appeal to me as a builder.

Recently, three entries from the flickr contest, Brainless by Djokson, Toa Lewa by DeeVee, and Tamaru- Jungle Defender by Makaru, were featured on the front page.

This seems to amount to favoritism on the part of the staff, and grants an unfair advantage to these three entries over the others in the contest. Due to their increased popularity, people are likely to vote for these entries simply because they saw them on the front page, which creates an inherent disadvantage for the other entries.

I don't know whether the news staff writing those articles were even aware that those MOCs were entries in the Flickr contest. I certainly didn't, and it's not mentioned in either the news articles or the MOC topics themselves.

I posted the articles and I was indeed unaware of this. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, the stories have been taken down until the contest is over.
