The old and unexplained

Recommended Posts

I apologize if this topic has been touched on before.

After almost three years of shying away from BIONICLE, I looked back through some of the old comics and MNOG, and realized how much unexplained material back then is still a mystery today. I went to BS01 to refresh my memory on some of the objects / events in question, but sure enough, not much has been discovered about them.

MNOG brought up the most questions I have. My biggest questions that came from it is, how did that Golden Kanohi found in that chamber beneath the great sundial get there, and how did it disappear later on? I asumme it was placed there by the Great Beings, since the sundial was part of the Mata Nui robot, which the GBs made, but that's just me

. If you have any explainations of your own, or any other old parts of the story that have yet to be explained, post them.

The Golden Kanohi was only there as part of a LEGO Magazine contest, it doesn't actually exist in-story.

I knew it was part of a contest, but I thought I recalled it being mentioned somewhere as having some significance.

I think the sundial was positioned there in order to be found by the Toa Mata. We know that the Toa Mata were supposed, should the Great Spirit be attacked, to exit their canisters on the island that would form if Mata Nui landed into the sea. They would then proceed to Metru Nui and from there they would begin their mission to re-awaken the Great Spirit.

We now know that, in order to do so, they would have to go to Karda Nui and enter the Codrex. We also know that the sundial points at the Codrex, because Takanuva used it that way. We can therefore conclude that the sundial was meant to be found by the Toa Mata, who were then supposed to use it to find their way to Karda Nui and the Codrex.

I don't have a real explanation for the Golden Mask beneath the sundial. Perhaps it was an invitation to the Toa Mata to supply themselves with Golden Kanohi (which they would have obtained by getting hold of more Kanohi masks, for example in the Great Temple) before proceeding with their mission. This theory is supported by the fact that the Golden Kanohi disappeared soon after the Toa Mata achieved the Quest for the Masks. However, I realize it is still somewhat shaky and I am unable to provide a better explanation.

Wait, what is this "Golden Kanohi" I'm hearing about? I've never played MNOG, so I'm only familiar with the parts of it that were referenced later on.

Could anyone supply pics of this mask?

Well, I expected somebody to say this by now, but here's my stock answer. First, so far as I know it hasn't been officially incorporated, so all we can do is theorize what it could mean if it were to be confirmed canon. The standard theory of course is that the Golden Hau illusion meant that the Rahi had to be defeated before the person destined to use that elevator could pass. The word above it is "Rahi", and it disappears after Takua's Company defeats the Rahi at Kini-Nui, enabling the key to be accessed.

As for what caused it, nothing more specific than "destiny, somehow" has been offered that I recall. Of course, this is all moot if indeed it is non-canon. I always liked to think of it as really there, though, and just a multipurpose "you shall not pass... yet" thing built into the sundial device by the Great Beings and intended to be repurposed to whatever need destiny had at the time. (Because I doubt they could have guessed the need for Takua's specific situation at that time.) There's probably some sort of scanner that determines the situation above and displays a clue word to what must be done before the scanner's conditions are satisfied and it'll turn off the shield illusion.

That's just the straightforward deduction from what we know. Any number of other explanations would be possible, though.

Well, I can't say that I know much about this topic, but I can say that I think that MNOG tends to have some inconsistencies with canon, such as several mentions of "ancient" carvers that made several statues. Again, I don't know too much about this topic, but I guess it's kinda like that - an inconsistency.

This was discussed in a recent topic and it was pointed out there's no way to know that that can't be interpreted as a figure of speech for something like "Hafu carved them in ancient times". The Path of Prophecies was indeed carved in "ancient" times to the Mata Nui inhabitants whose memories don't go back much further than that, and it's even possible it may have been carved before the delayed memory loss kicked in, so it could be a poetic term for "Hafu before he now remembers", which could feel like a different person in a sense. (And/or just the souvenir guy waxing poetic to make the place he was selling souvenirs for sound more souvenir-worthy. :P) I'd call it a possible inconsistency, in that case.
