'03-style Le- and Onu-Matoran

Recommended Posts

I actually started a topic asking if anyone had any ideas, and was very grateful for all the helpful responses, from building how-tos to recommendations for clothing dye. For now, I decided to try my hand at building.

Basically, is anyone else erked that in 2003, no Le- or Onu-Matoran were released? I quite like that Matoran design, and since I may be doing some Nuva-era stop-motion animations I decided it was time to try and compensate for that lack of sets, sooooooooo I made some Matoran!

Nuparu's holding a heatstone, btw. He's one of my favourite Bionicle characters, and has been since I bought the Boxor set back in 2002. I thought it would be fun to make some of the game items, though I'll do them in more depth in a future thread.

With the Le-Matoran, yes those hands are blu-tacked on, but I couldn't find another way to hide all that grey. I don't have many technic green parts, whereas I have an abundance of black (lucky for Onepu and pals!), so I decided to try and integrate as many of my green Bionicle pieces (of which I have a lot) as possible. Boreas and Shu never got official forms, in sets or games, so I thought it was okay to just give them whichever masks I had lying around that fitted the colour scheme. I would have loved to have made Tamaru, but I don't have his mask, though I plan to make a few Bricklink orders and get a bunch of Kanohi and other Bionicle pieces (like more 03 Matoran bodies) once I've earned a bit of money this summer. Also, I know Midak is supposed to be all-black, but I couldn't find my black Pakari or my black Bohrok Va feet. Click below for close-ups of the body designs.

Bonus round time! I've made a few other little Mata Nui tidbits that aren't worthy of their own thread(s) but you might enjoy.

This drill is the one you'd see at the sundial in the Great Mine in MNOG. It's not 100% game accurate, but I thought it'd be fun to give it a try, and I'm pleased with how it came out. The only problem is that while it's the right scale for the '01 Tohunga, it's too small for the '03 Matoran. The Ice Pokawi is like the regular Pokawi, which lives in Le-Wahi, but it's adapted for the Ko-Wahi/Onu-Wahi border, where it's cold and snowy but not too harsh. Its tooth is too cold for a Matoran to touch, but not actually made of ice. This Infernavika is just a slight update of the combiner model, because I felt like making it.

While my next two stop-motions - The Suva Scuffle and Magnetic Madness - won't feature these Matoran builds, I hope to get the chance to use the designs at some point. Some of my favourite characters are Le- and Onu-Matoran, and it's nice to be able to (sort of) make them at last.

So, whaddaya think of this?

They are pretty simple builds, but I like them. Although I feel like blue-taking the pieces on the chest is kinda cheating, it looks good.

While the MOC's are good, your picture quality is amazing. You must have pretty good equipment, all I have to post pictures is my cell phone and a clean desk.

Thanks, I use a Nikon D3100 for pretty much everything. It's what I shoot my animations with, though my editing software significantly lowers the quality.

I like the designs, but they just seem a little too wide (the legs and arms are quite far apart) I know that it's difficult building at such a small scale, but I digress.

Also, the "bonus" models are pretty cool too.

Thanks.

I really should have put a size comparison pic up as well, but their proportions are more-or-less the same as the official 03 Matoran, including the arms and legs.

Very cool Matoran designs! If only you had Kongu's feet/mask/hands.

I know, right! Hopefully, if I can earn some more money soon, I'll see if I can get some 01 Tohunga pieces.

These look sweet! It's a little sad that some of the poseability is taken away but they still look great and look like the original matoran! The bonus rahi are also super cute! Great job with these!  :D

Thanks! I plan to try and refine the Le-Matoran design at some point, though. Like has already been said, the blue-tack is a bit of a cheat, and I think it'd look better if I could make the body entirely from green pieces rather than mismatched greens and greys.

Thanks for the responses, people!

Niceeee these are to cool!

I actually really like Kongu's design, i remembered how you had trouble with making the Le-Matoran

Thanks! I'm going to have another go at the Le-Matoran design for a future episode of Nuva, perhaps even creating a torso facade out of card, but for now I'm happy with it. The Onu-Matoran body will appear in the next episode - I'm using it as the body for Tiribomba.

I think you did a pretty good job with these. The build isn't too complicated, but they still look nice. The color scheme works fine. The glue is an interesting way of connecting the chest armor. It's a little bit unconventional, but I think it works.

Overall, very nice job on these. Thanks for sharing.
