Spikels Mixels Teaser Image

The third wave of Mixels is starting to hit stores, so it's time for another BZPower set review. BZP Reporter Xccj managed to grab the three Mixels from the tan Spikels tribe, including 41521: Footi, 41522: Scorpi, and 41523: Hoogi. Should you claw your way through the crowd to get your hands on these, or are they best left in the dust? Read on to find out!

Am I the only one who really wants to like the Mixels, but simply can't make myself do so?

I love the colors (bootiful tan!), the spikes, but the impossible proportions that result in completely unequal limbs (i.e. huge pwnin' articulated legs and derp-tastic quasi-joint arms) really push me away from these.

I was already planning on getting all of these anyways, but I was still on the fence about liking Footi and Scorpi. This review really makes Footi's stronger qualities stand out, though. He should make a fine addition to my collection. Scorpi is still a bit just there, though. I wish they'd been able to have a mouth closer to the one in the cartoon's, somehow. No clear idea how they would do that, though, really...

I think their wacky proportions are one of their most endearing traits, besides of course their cartoon eyes. They remind me of Pokémon or Muppets.

Hoogi might be one of my favorite Mixels just because I'm sure he gives the best hugs. The awkward leg design is made up for by improved articulation in his arms... and anyway, these already offer way more potential for expressive poses than most earlier figures of this size, so even if they COULD be better they deserve some applause for how good they are as-is.

Also, for those hoping to accumulate the new tiny balls and ball cups, Hoogi includes the most tiny ball and ball cup elements of any single Mixel (ten total). For that matter, buying a pair of Hoogi sets is the only $10 Mixels purchase that will get you more ball and ball cup elements than buying the $10 Wolf Legend Beast or Lion Legend Beast sets from Legends of Chima.
