One of the first ideas not based on a licensed theme, the Exo-Suit was greatly anticipated by a lot of AFOLs. Remember, not all FRAGILE connections count as illegal connections — illegal connections are typically those that specifically stress the pieces, either damaging them in the long term or making disassembly a hassle. Anyway, the most fragile connection here is the classic robot arm/clip pieces used various places on the model, and the reason those are so fragile is that they're exactly the same molds that have been in use since the 80s and they're worn to the point of flimsiness (they've finally been replaced as of this year, according to the designer, but parts struck from the new molds haven't yet made it into sets). And of course there aren't any new molds in this set, because it's a LEGO Ideas set, and it's common knowledge at this point that there simply isn't the budget to strike new molds just for those. This isn't really the second time classic spacemen have appeared without a classic smile... there's also this guy, who is sporting a more modern grin with sparkly eyes and brown eyebrows. But of course, he only appeared in one set, and an extended-line set at that. I have a hard time thinking NASA would come up with something this industrial-looking at any point in the future. NASA is all about streamlining and form factor these days — just look at the Space Shuttle, or for that matter, Robonaut. Something this exposed-looking and industrial speaks to a 20th century vision of the future, I think — a future imagined in a time when the most advanced robots were the kind you'd find in factories. I guess there are still some things NASA develops that are kind of messy-looking, though, like Curiosity. And I wouldn't say the printed part is wasted, necessarily. It's not necessary, but it also wasn't designed for this set — that same part has appeared with that same print in two Legends of Chima sets. So it's really just a case of using a piece that happened to be available. It's not a huge deal if it can't stand on one foot, I guess, but it seems disappointing if the ankle joint just sort of swings at the attempt. The difficulty in getting it to stably do so comes more from the trickiness in posing the limbs without having pieces fall off than the axle-pin combo in the foot. I do not generally buy sets anymore but watching and reading the review has really made me appreciate the set's build and creative design. I do not really play with Lego sets so this would be a perfect to display in my college dorm next year. Hopefully I will be able to pick one up for myself!
