Tohunga, because they're so cute and appealing. You just want to collect them in all the different colors, like jellybeans.

Took the words right out of my mouth. There were so many colour combinations. Especially if you got some Bohrok Va legs.

The Voya Nui Matoran, for sure. Each one was similar, yet completely different, and I love that. They were kind of like the Toa Mata, but in Matoran form.

:a: :r: :z: :a: :k: :i:

I got Monster Hunter World on PS4, add me at bmrjw2 if you want

Also I play FFXIV, my main is Anastasia Willow on Exodus but I've got characters on every NA datacenter.

I have a special place in my heart for those Mctoran, but the Mahri matoran and 2003 matoran are really well done.

I've never actually gotten a good look of any of the Voya-Nui matoran so I can't tell whether or not I like them.

I'm kind of tied on this one, but I think I'll go with the Tohunga build, simply because of their memorable portrayals in the MNOG and their nostalgia, but the mahri and 2003 matoran are almost tied.

Voya Nui Martoran. Each one was unique, making them the most interesting as well, IMO.

the Mahri Nui Matoran had fantastic and very customizable designs. hands-down winner for me. the McToran, '03 Matoran, and Voyatoran do deserve honourable mentions though; '03s in particular for the MNOG2 nostalgia factor.

Voya-toran. Best builds out of all. I must have bought several of each for parts. Garan with 4 hordika necks and with chronicler staffs? I'll take 5!

it's funny you say that considering Garan was a massive shelf-warmer iirc. i got three of him because it was so easy to find him on sale in a desperate attempt to get rid of him.

Okay, I'm going to be really bold here and admit that I actually liked the Av-Matoran builds. Now, before you all for exiling me to Karzahni for blasphemy, might I point out that this is an opinion poll. That means I'm allowed to give my opinion, which is what I have just done. Now here's why I liked them.

They were simple compared to Matoran from previous years, and well-priced for their size. They were bigger as well, which I liked. Here's the big one for me: they had their own individual masks! Think about it. Did any matoran sets from prior years come with their own masks? Not that I know of. They reused old masks from previous years. What I liked about the Av-Matoran (and the later Agori sets that used the same build) was that they were small, cheap sets that had unique masks. Some of them had really useful parts as well, so they were excellent sources of parts for MOCing.

I didn't really like the bigness of them, because that made it look sort of awkward when posing them next to other Matoran models.

However I agree 100% with your point on the masks. The fact that they didn't slap on some older Toa/Turaga's mask on them was an excellent move by Lego.

My favorite would be the Mahri Matoran, and not because of nostalgia reasons. I really liked the Hordika armor on them because it didn't make them look like the puny and scrawny Matoran that we knew from '01 and '02. These Matoran were fighters, ones who didn't depend on a Toa for help, and they looked like fighters.

Plus, the shoulder-mounted air launcher was probably the coolest thing I've ever seen in Bionicle. I wish that they made an entire series of them, not just Delfilak and Dekar.

All my love always goes to the 01toran. Call it nostalgia if you will; I just have incredibly fond memories of the little guys from their classic appearances, and their simplicity - and, I must confess, cuteness to a degree - won me over right from the start.

I did like the Mahritoran a lot too, though; their designs seemed... well, fuctional, I guess. Not just thrown together like some of the previous small set designs seemed to be, but actually came off as more sturdy and believable. Plus, the fact that their masks were cool recolours was a point in their favour, too.

My vote goes to the '03 Matoran here. the original design was cute, but they could hardly move. the '03 design retained similar proportions while adding articulation and proper hands. sure they lacked a flingy arm, but they did get the Kohlii sticks to make up for it. I also liked that they had a gear in them. It made them resemble big sets more and reflected the idea of them becoming stronger in the story. The only real shame is that they didn't come in more colors.

I voted for the Doomtoran. They were different enough that I think they could be considered the first non-clone sets. They also included very useful MOCing pieces and combined old weapons with colors that one wouldn't expect but also fit very well. They conveyed the personalities of the characters nicely as well, which is impressive given how different they were from the Toa Metru whom contributed their masks. The only real cons I notice are no eyes, somewhat stunted neck articulation (which would have been worse with eyes), and Kazi's lack of an actual head.

There are many things I like about the Mahritoran, such as having a unique build with no new molds, the Hagah mask recolors, and generally useful parts like the silver Bohrok teeth. However, they had poor arm articulation, and also lacked eyes even though they could have had them without hindering articulation.

The McToran and adorable and fill me with nostalgia, and the Kolhiitoran seemed to me like just upgraded versions, retaining the quite cute proportions and interesting colors/masks while adding articulation, an actual build, and a gear function. The only Matoran I really didn't like were the Metruan. They had cool masks, but their color schemes were boring, their limbs were too small, their head fall off really easily, and the Kanoka were too similar for me to really get into.

Looking at closer pictures of the Voya-Nui matoran I can't see why anyone really likes them. Sure, they're all fairly original builds, I'll give them that, but they're mostly just hunch backed and really strange looking with odd proportions/limbs.

MoLtoran had the perfect blend of simplicity and complexity, and where the only ones with functions. Mctoran were just too tiny and simple, and every build that came after MoLtoran was boring, save for the Voyatoran but their designs were just... boring. Torso, matching arms and legs tacked on. MoLtoran have gear spinning, nice posability in the arms and their legs moved pretty well. They were balanced and looked very neat and just lovely overall.

It was a tough dispute between Metrutoran and Moltoran. But Moltoran winned. I liked how the Moltoran were bigger and had a nice armor, but the Moltoran had gears, and gears are the best thing in the world. The funny thing is I just own one Metrutoran and I never had a Moltoran.

Story-wise, that was the idea. As sets, they also included rare and useful parts like Hordika necks. And the universally-beloved McToran had ridiculous proportions, btw.

The McToran. Simple has always been good. I felt that they never really needed an upgrade, however I do like the MoLtoran regardless.

Either way, the McToran had so much personality, not because of MNOG, but because of their beautiful color schemes. They were collectible and easy to play with regardless of articulation.

Any other McToran set was uninteresting to me. The MoLToran would be my next pick, but they just can't compare to their previous design. Not to mention, the pieces that connected the feet to the body were female dogs if you lost them because they were matching the foot color scheme.

But yeah. McToran.

I loved how each Voyatoran had a different design, as opposed to the palette swaps of past Matoran. The fact that they reused the Toa Metru masks annoys me slightly, but besides that, they were all unique and it helped give each more personality. The Kohlii Matoran are second, I liked how they were so faithful to the originals while having upgraded articulation and a gear function :D

I prefer the Mahri Nui Matoran (a.k.a. the Matoran from Lesovikk's homeland) for its versatility. It's the best build to make custom Matoran with, using existing colour schemes.

Mctoran and MoLtoran tied for first with me(nostalgia all the way) with the non-standardized Voya Nui era Matoran in a close third.

First two, well for starters there's the MNOLG 1 and 2, and that alone sells it for nostalgia

as for the VN designs, the lack of any uniform idea for what constituted a matoran, aside from general size & shape, meant that I could easily build a whole bunch of new ones from scratch. So that was cool.
