It would have to be 2008 for me. That year featured the return of the Toa Nuva, the full introduction of the Brotherhood of Makuta, and the (at the time) final battle for Mata Nui, which gave it lots of gravitas. It also featured the best story serials, on the whole, including Federation of Fear. What's more, the rapid-fire plot twists at the end of the year were the best plot twists in all of BIONICLE (mainly because they were some of the only ones planned in advance). We learned that the entire Matoran universe was located inside Mata Nui, and not a moment afterwards, we discovered that Makuta had taken control of that giant robotic body. The year's cliffhanger ending was fantastic, and left me really worried for the Matoran and Toa, and curious about Mata Nui's journey in exile.

Unfortunately, 2008 was probably the worst year for sets, but I think the story makes up for that.

2006 comes in second place. I just can't get enough of the Piraka.

2008 for me too. The climactic struggle to restore world order has to be my favorite part of the story. Plus, i initially thought the sets from that year were cool too.

2007, probably. That was back when I was a wee lad and I first joined the fanbase.

I was like a kid in a candy shop whenever I went to the supermarket to get a new Mahri set, and don't get me started on how much fun I had playing the Lego.com Bionicle games.

Although I perceive 2001-2005 as having all the best storylines, 2006 was probably the most entertaining one in terms of things to find and do on the internet. There were more online games than any other year and lots of campaigns, news and stories to follow through Bzpower. 2006 wasn't the best year at all, but it certainly kept you on the edge of your seat and offered a great deal for you to do.

I voted 2001--although the story was more together in later years, 2001 was where it all started for me, and I remember playing with my Toa for hours and hours, making new adventures for them. Plus, my dark ages were from 2004-2008, so while I like the story from those years, I experienced it more as a way to catch up with where the story was rather than experience it as it went along.

2008.

It had the best web serials. (Federation of Fear, Dark Mirror, Mutran Chronicles, Destiny War, etc.) The Toa Nuva returned to the story. We got to meet the rest of the Brotherhood of Makuta, learned more about the Order of Mata Nui, and saw Teridax's Plan succeed, leaving us with Bionicle's greatest cliffhanger ever. Not to mention all the great battles we saw that year. That's what makes it a very entertaining year, IMO.

Everyone is one choice away from being the bad guy in another person's story.

2008. Lewa + Pohatu + Kopaka. +Toa Ignika. Most entertaining Toa team ever. That's before I throw in Mutran Chronicles and Federation of Fear. And the Kingdom.

I also like the Phantoka games and the short movies for the year, and also the plot twists. Definitely the most entertaining year. :)

Some may think I'm nuts, but I loved the Voya Nui Online Game. :P Yes, there were lots of back-and-forth tasks, but it was a well executed representation of the island and the new enemies. I found it pretty easy to get lost in the details for hours as I explored. The other mini-games - I think one was Piraka Attack where you controlled the Piraka to shoot Zamors at unending waves of Matoran - were pretty awesome too. Too many hours invested in them!

The storyline launched the Mask of Life arc, and had such a perfect sense of newness and urgency and connection to the preceding story. The sets were clearly well-received as well - I think the Piraka slightly more than the Inika due to their more unique design compared to previous sets of six.

Finally, I think the descent to the Mask of Life was one of the coolest "proceed through each chamber to reach your destination" adventures I've read.

For story and sets, I loved 2007-onward, but I voted 2008, simply for the brilliant plot twist.

2008. I was not around when the OG Nuva were in stores, but watching MoL made me familiar with them. When 2008 hit, it was so epic to see them flying in Karda Nui, battling Makuta. Cryoshell's songs were hummed when sets were built.

Reading the serials later on, I'm convinced it was the most entertaining. It had it's flaws(part durability and the designs for the Makuta-Mistika: I think Krika is a lazy set :/ ), but it has the best memories attached to me.

2008, definitely.  The scale of it is just HUGE.  Also, the story itself was plain epic.  We met so many new characters that really rounded out the series.  And those twists are possibly better than the one in Star Wars V.

Purely in terms of story I would probably agree with 2008 - though 2006 and 2004 come close after for me personally. Including media and what not though it'd have to be one of the years with one of the "NOG" online games - probably 2006 overall in that case with VNOG. :)

I voted 2001, that has to be the most entertaining year for me, especially in sets. The sets had payability like no other, each with some sort of function to make them animate or move. Plus, there was the whole quest for the masks thing, which appealed to me strongly.

2006. I would have said 2008, but my only way of getting the story back then was through the Lego Magazine comics (and I still have the stack of said comics). 2008 had its story too spread out to me, and because of that, I did not enjoy that year as much as 2006.

This was tough for me. I mean, 2001 was filled with mystery and intrigue. The Bohrok of 2002 added peril I never really thought possible. 2003 brought in the Toa of Light. 2004 showed us the Time before time. 2005 was the rescue mission that was exciting in concept, but not in practice. I think it should have been a half year story much like the Kal were. But the 2006 story is by far my favorite. Interesting characters, great adventure. It had everything. I think the real question is which year was the worst. If that were the case I would have to say 2005. Or 2010 as it marked the end.

Out of my favorite years, 2008 was the big one, asides from 2003, it was the year of the final desperate attempt to save Mata Nui, the final fight between Toa and Makuta, the big comeback of the Toa Nuva. The Begginning of the End.

2006. It was the year I really first got into the story, and I loved every part of it,

Either 2006 or 2008, for me, though I voted 2006.

2006 brought the Toa Nuva back, after two long years of flashback (and I don't enjoy flashbacks)... only to get their butts kicked, but still. I enjoyed it. The narrative was interesting. I liked the villains and the heroes.

2008 was great as a final conflict. If 2006 was great for heroes and villains, this was like... the Superbowl of Heroes and Villains. The most powerful toa in history (Nuva, suped up with adaptive armor) fighting some of the most powerful foes in history -- the Makuta (slightly handicapped, some, but that was hardly a concern). It was a great conflict, with the highest of stakes.

Haha nice its very true that 2008 was like the Superbowl of heroes and villains, ive never thought of it that way, it was like the 49ers Cowboys rivalry of the early to mid 90s, two of the most powerful teams (Toa Nuva and Makuta) in the universe going up against each other.

I voted for 2008, but I'm surprised more people didn't say 2003. All kinds of cool and unexpected things happened then: the Toa lost their powers, the Bohrak-Kal were the first sapient foes (apart from Makuta and the Bahrag), we found out Makuta was still around, the first movie came out, we got the first novels and guidebook, the Rahkshi were awesome all around, and we got the first hint at the nature of the larger Bionicle universe. It's easy to forget how cool a lot of that was now, but it was a thrill ride at the time

Edit: 2008 being like the Superbowl is a great analogy! I might steal it sometime. ;)

I'd say 2006 or 2008. 2007 was also good but it definitely felt more like the middle chapter of a huge event.

2006 upped the stakes extremely high as we learned that Mata Nui was on the verge of dying. The quest for the mask of life, the sinister villain of the Piraka, and the return of the Toa Nuva as the main characters for the first part of the year was undeniably exciting, especially after two years of flashback material. Reintroducting six Matoran to become the next Toa was unprecedented and was exciting for a lot of old time fans. This was the first time, in my opinion, that every bit of story material was important for progression of the plot.

However, 2008 was also a huge year full of excitement, as it was advertised as a big turning point. The addition of Toa Nuva as the main characters and revealing their pasts, as well as using the BoM as the main villains made it a much more lore-based year than ever before. Lots of revelations, and lots of tension as the race to save the universe commenced. Of course, the ending was phenomenal too.

And 2010 gets a special mention because it was so short that it didn't bother with filler. Every week gave us a new portion of story and that was definitely exciting as a fan from the beginning.

I loved everything 2006 onward, the rush, the complexity, and growing darkness and lore; I personally think that had Bionicle's story not been hindered by Lego's need for sales, it has the potential to be one of the greatest fictional myths since Star Wars.

Getting off track, I apologize. In order: 08, 10, 07/06 (I can't choose!) or 09. I enjoyed all prior stuff, but personal issues caused financial problems and so I was only able to get 3-5 sets a year (04 I only got 2, second one disappeared so I do not really count that one). They do have a great deal of nostalgia to it all!

I will get my hands on you Kopaka Mata and Vakama Metru!

(I must get my hands on those healthy purple-berries! "Bort!")
