LEGO to Reduce CO2 Emissions from Packaging by 10k Tons

If you got any LEGO sets since June, you may have actually got a set with FSC certification on the packaging (e.g. 21109 Exo-Suit has it on the bottom). As Jorgen Vig Knudstorp, President and CEO of The LEGO Group puts it, "the FSC logo on the box may seem insignificant when you see it for the first time, but it is a major milestone for us, and an important element in our efforts to become carbon positive by 2016". LEGO expects a reduction of CO2 emissions from production of packaging by 10k tons this year, as well as savings of 6k tons of cardboard and 3k truckloads due to smaller packaging size. More than 90% of the material used by LEGO for core line packaging is FSC certified and 100% is planned for 2015. It's great to see our favorite company making efforts to make our planet cleaner and better. Read the entire press report here.

This is fantastic news. I knew that Lego was making efforts to cut down on packaging size for environmental reasons, but the statistics on exactly how much waste has actually been eliminated due to those changes are incredible!

I noticed this in the packaging/instructions when I got my MINI Cooper a couple months ago and I was going to include something about that in my review but never got around to researching the whole change. This is great news and like Lyichir said, the statistics are phenomenal.

2016 is just around the corner, so it's excellent to see them pushing their practices into new standards so swiftly. This actually explains, in part, why they have been doing a lot of sets in plastic bag packaging. They're easily compressed, more can be packed into a crate, and more lightweight so less fuel is used to transport them.

Always good to see a status update!

Funny, now that I think about the box sets for Hero Factory Invasion from Below Summer Wave, they seem a bit smaller compared to last years'.

You're right! Good observation!
