3D Printing failure

So, last month I made an order on Shapeways to have 2 of my 3d models printed in Nylon Plastic.

And I, being an idiot, didn't properly scale the pieces and none of them ended up fitting properly. :D

That problem is especially appearent on the claw pieces, wich are completely off scale. The stylized Pakari has the correct size, but the axle isn't quite big enough.

It's still pretty awesome to hold the designs I made on a computer in my own hands.

For anyone interested, here's more pictures:

That's awesome, even if they're scaled wrong. (Speaking of which, the claws actually don't seem to be - judging by the picture of the claw attached to the socket, they fit fine.) I really like the design of that Pakari as well.

These are so cool! It's sad they don't fit perfectly (though the claws look fine?) but they still look great. I love seeing what 3-D printing can do for the community and creating masks/weapons!

Thanks a lot!

I am actually very pleased with how the Pakari turned out (apart from the axle being too small, obviously).

The claws aren't actually really attached to the socket though, they're just resting in it. You can't see it in the picture, but the socket couldn't actually hold the claw in place due to the axle being too small. I must have made a mistake when I scaled them, they were supposed to be quite a bit bigger.

I will probably make a second order though (Shapeways actually gave me a 25$ coupon :P), I'll pay more attention to the scale this time though.

It's really cool that more people in the Bionicle Community are delving into 3D printing. That Pakari is really well done and looks awesome. It could just about be an actual piece! I really like the claws too. It seems like you put a lot of work into these to make sure they aren't just flat and have lots of interesting details. I can't wait to see what you do with them!

Ah, okay. That makes sense.

Any chance you could use something akin to Greenstuff to make the axle a bit larger?

Shame that they don't fit. Though if you have some time and a couple bucks you could probably replace the too-small axle with the end of a sawn-off axle,

I put some sticky tape over the mask's axle and it kind of fits now. The eye holes dont really match up, I put the axle on a little too low appearently. But that's an easy fix and will be resolved with the next order I make. The claws aren't really worth fixing, since they are completely off-scale and didn't come out nearly as nice as I had hoped.

Love your work from Modalt masks btw!

That's a really cool design. Great work on it! The same exact scaling issue happened with our first Pakari prototype for MNOLG: CE. It still serves a purpose as a pendant to wear at conventions, though. :)

Thanks a lot! I guess I could do that too, if I actually had the chance to attend a convention. Living in Germany kind of sucks in that regard. :P

I actually have some greenstuff around, but putting some sticky tape over the axle worked too. :D

As you can see in the pictures, the finish of the mask is actually very rough (even though I ordered the polished plastic). So I'll try to make it nice and smooth with some clear coat sometime soon.

You told me about this earlier and I think it's pretty cool!

If you have an issue with the material, or perhaps an issue in general, http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/transformers-fan-art/384034-fakebuskers-shapeways-thread-october-2012-creative-spotlight.html features Fakebusker, a Shapeways master. Might be interesting to look over for insight.

Why are the axels too small? Did you measure improperly? This might help : http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=75308

Yup, my measurements were slightly off. Not by much though, at least not on the Kanohi. But I somehow managed to completely screw up the scale of the claws.

Thanks for the links, I'll take a look at them!

Heyyy

maybe we can finally find a way to bring back collectables (woo!)

Amazing job designing that mask! It looks amazing especially on the first MOC.

Thanks! I'm actually finishing a Kakama in a similar style to the Pakari right now. I'll get that one printed alongside the fixed Pakari.
