I was saving this for a contest, but then it turns out it breaks a bunch of rules, so just take this as a regular post then.

So this is a revamp of Toa Gali, except with an emphasis on trans-medium-blue pieces that glow while under a black light. It's heading for the Dark Side Display at BrickCon. Some of the "glowing" pictures may be a bit blurry just because my camera isn't the best at taking shots in the dark, and I only had one small black light to work with anyway, so it didn't always illuminate the full model.

The coloring took some work. It turns out there are not a ton molds that come in this shade of trans blue. Some, like the 2x2 dishes and 1x1 round studs, are common in trans light blue, and so I ended up purchasing a lot of those when the sellers couldn't tell the difference between the two shades. While some essential Bionicle pieces come in this color, it wasn't enough to build a fully armored Toa, so I had to incorporate a lot of system elements in, such as the grille pieces, cheese slopes, and 4x4 wedges that came with the Ninjago Ice Dragon. I also used some ClickIt bead elements that just happened to be in this color, seen on the back of the lower arms and the back of the foot. The tubing, mostly used on the back, was listed as trans medium blue on bricklink, but it is actually a slightly different shade that doesn't glow. Unfortunately, I incorporated it into the design before I realized this. Fun reference, the yellow "heart-stone" technic piece is not a special color; small yellow technic bits from the late 90s just glow really well all on their own. Weird, I know!  (Oh yeah, and that's a misprint light blue Kaukau.  Realizing it glows was my inspiration to make this model.)

As for design, I'm fairly pleased with how the overall shape turned out. You might not be able to tell, but there's actually a skirt at her waist, using the grille pieces, and when I got that to work I tried to base the rest of the model on that scale. I am also pleased with the Mahri inner glass pieces on the upper torso, which give her a rounded, more feminine feel without being too much... at least in my opinion. The arms and legs were made simple enough to be the right size and show off the colors; I'm especially pleased with the system / technic combination of the lower legs! The feet had to go through a few redesigns, but they have the color and provide stability, so they work. I'm still not 100% satisfied on the weapons, however. I wanted to feel like the hooks were on the ends of a short staff, but it was difficult to mix in the medium blue color, especially after the tubes turned out to be a bust.

Anyway, there it is. Comments and criticism appreciated. I was thinking of building more Toa in glowing trans colors, but then their early designs failed horribly, and I just really like how Gali turned out so I'm not even going to bother. Thanks for stopping by!

Marvelous work! For such a limited supply of parts, you managed to balance the colors out really well. Her proportions are wonderful, and you utilized system parts more creatively than I could. I will say that the fingers look a little strange, but there's little that could be done to improve that without messing up the color scheme. All in all, awesome work!

It's an interesting concept and the glowing is pretty cool. I don't know if the build is the best though. The arms and torso look good, but the fett and lower legs just seem too blocky to me. You did a pretty good job avoiding that on the rest of the body. I guess that's kind of what happens when you use a lot of system pieces though.

Overall though it's a pretty cool concept and I haven't really seen anything like it before.

WHOA. That MOC is just glowing with awesomeness. You've done a spectacular job on making this model look great during both halves of the day! Amazing job! And I never knew the Misprint Kaukau could glow under a blacklight. That's pretty cool! (Even cooler than Kopaka. B-)  :P )

Hey... doesn't that one guy on Eurobricks have all those transparent orange Tahu masks? and isn't that shade of orange flourescent? He could make GLOWING TAHU!! :P  :P  :P
