I was having a discussion on EB about different types of packaging and their environmental impact and whatnot, so I figured I should see what people do with their packaging to judge how things actually play out vs. ideal situations.

It's pretty straightforward: I've listed three types of packaging, and for each, you may choose if you throw it in the garbage, throw it into recycle, or keep it.

This covers all forms of packaging save for polybags, but then again last I checked there was no question about their environmental impact to begin with.

Please be honest; this is about what you do with the packaging, not what you ideally would.

I tend to keep all my packaging regardless of whether or not I actually have room for it or not. :P I have a bunch of 2001 Rahi boxes that have been taking up space for years. I keep all the canisters that I still have in a large plastic bag. I only have one set that came in a pouch so far, and I kept that, and will likely keep any / all future pouches.

I don't get sets often, but over the years I manage to pick up a little stash of boxes that sit around for a little while (this may sound weird but they have a nice *new* scent...) before I recycle them all at once. We recycle mostly everything paper or cardboard in our house.

I keep most of my boxes, and use them to store stuff. I keep canisters.

I don't like the pouches, and I would throw them away. I still have my Rocka Stealth Machine package though because I just don't have another place to put the set.

Since 2012, I've kept all of the packaging I come in contact with, and the instructions. I have a piles of SW boxes lying around, filled with smaller SW boxes. :P I only have four canisters (three BIONICLE and one HF) that I got secondhand, and three or four HF pouches.

I used to keep everything. Then, I started throwing out pouches. But I always meant to keep the cardboard boxes and canisters (especially the canisters, since they're useful for storage).

But then one day last year... We went recycling and I recycled all of my Lego boxes. That was... a heartbreaking day. Very hard to part with such nice boxes with great artwork. :(

Cardboard? Into the recycling bin it goes!

Canisters? Better keep those!

Pouches? Throw 'em away and/or keep them.

How do you throw them away and keep them?

I will generally recycle most of the set packaging. I kept the Toa canisters for the longest time, but they were just taking up too much room and I didn't really need them so they got recycled. I still have a few of the boxes sets came in because they were convenient for helping to sort and store pieces.

Voted "keep" for all three. However, boxes come with a caveat—unless I'm using a box to store completed sets, I typically break down the boxes and cut out any interesting graphics I want to save, and throw away the rest of the scrap material. This helps to cut down on how much space is taken up, even though it obviously renders the boxes I break down useless for future storage.

I tend to prefer pouches (at least for Constraction sets like those which have used them) since the space they take up empty is negligible but if I ever should want to use them as storage again, they remain just as good for that as they ever were (and used as storage, they rarely take up much more space than the set inside them). Canisters... I've kept a LOT of canisters, and frankly I have no idea what to do with them. I can't break them down to make them take up less space like I can with boxes, and even if I use them for storage they take up a LOT of space. Our room currently has a massive cardboard box full of canisters in one corner, which I suppose I'll store if I can ever make room in our house for a place to put them.

For boxes, I keep them until my mom gets angry and I have to throw them away, but I always keep the special ones such as Ideas/CUUSOO, or Master Builder Academy.

For canisters, I kept all of them for years until I recycled them when the original BIONICLE ended. I do regret it!

I keep all of my Hero Factory and Mixels pouches/bags. And I'll definitely keep the new BIONICLE boxes!

Do polybags count as pounches?

I keep everything, but I never had a HF set, so I never owned a pouch.

I'd say I toss 95% of my cardboard boxes into the recycling bin unless it's a set I'm really attached to or have collect ability (such as 8998 Toa Mata Nui, UCS R2-D2, The Simpsons House, etc). Canisters almost always stay in my collection, they make great storage. I have gotten lots of polybags and I mostly just collect those, so they rarely get opened unless it's a Minifig or a well designed set I want to display.

1. I usually threw away the cardboard boxes. I did keep one or two of them though. I still have a 04 Matoran box in my room gathering dust as we speak. :P

2. I kept all the canisters that I got with my sets.

3. I never got a set that came in a pouch. But if I did, I would probably keep it.

I keep everything except the plastic bags that separate the parts. (I even keep the Minifigures packets! :P) To save space I put boxes inside of boxes inside of big boxes inside of the biggest boxes. As for pouches, since they can just go flat they get put in my instructions storage, sometimes holding their own set's instructions. And I keep the canisters.

I didn't include polybags because there wasn't room in the poll, apparently. I didn't see it necessary to include them, anyway. They're little plastic bags most people throw away anyway. We already know they're terrible for the environment.

I did collect all of my canisters, but we threw them out a long time ago. They were taking up space, and I have all the parts in a large blue box anyway. I'll probably either always have my Bionicles, or pass them down to my kids. Failing that, my sister has kids, I'll dump them on those two instead :P

I've always recycled the cardboard and thrown away polybags.

One thing that bothers me, though, is the Spinner/pre-2014 Speedorz packaging. It looks so ugly when you rip it open and it's ridiculously hard to open it without damaging the cardboard. I'm tempted to throw away those. :P
