-------Chapter One-------

Sicarius walked up a hill and gazed upon what had once been his home. Once a small village of Matoran who all trusted each other, led by a noble Turaga, and guarded by a single Toa. Now a field of rubble and ash.

He walked down the quiet streets, matching their silence. He walked past his old home, the combat school, and the graveyard. The village didn't initially have a graveyard, it was built ten years ago by Sicarius to comemorate the Matoran and Turaga that died protecting themselves.

What were they protecting themselves from? They were protecting themselves from one of their own. A single Matoran, fueled by hate, jealousy, and retribution. And it was all Sicarius' fault...

--Eleven Years Ago, In a Small Village on the Southern Continent--

The Matoran known as Sicarius was on his way to work when one of his friends knocked him down.

"Sorry Sic, running a bit late today." He said as he stopped to help his friend get back up.

"Late for what?" Sicarius asked.

"Combat simulation with Roan." Sicarius' friend replied.

"Mind if I come watch?" Sicarius asked

"No, not at all. Let's go!" Sicarius' friend said with enthusiasm.

Sicarius and his friend made their way to the combat school while exchanging strategies, imagining insanely cool battles that could take place, and trying to contain their exitement.

"Well, it's about time." A Toa of Stone said as the two Matoran walked inside.

The school wasn't what you'd expect, rather than a classroom, it was a huge courtyard. Stone pillars and large rocks were scattered throughout it to provide ample cover in combat simulations.

The Matoran of the village who were interested in becoming fighters all came here to train under the instruction of their protector, Toa Roan. There were about 40 of them altogether in the village, and 15 of them served as guards alongside Roan. Together, they defended the village against the dangers that sought to destroy them; Rahi, nature, and the Makuta themselves.

"So. Are we ready to get started?" Roan asked as she walked across the courtyard.

"Good luck Yrun." Sicarius said to his friend as he walked over to the observation room.

Inside the observation room, Sicarius was joined by  the Turaga of their village, who instructed Roan at this school and chose her to be his successor twenty years ago.

"Today's match will be between Roan, Toa of Stone, and Yrun, Matoran of Earth." The Turaga proclaimed. "Let the match begin!"

Immediately Yrun took cover, Roan had the upper hand currently, as the Toa starts off with a weapon and the challenger does not. It was only a matter of time before she found where he was hiding and immobilize him. He had to keep moving and find a weapon.

Roan knew Yrun's fighting style; she instructed him in multiple combat simulations similar to this against some of the guards. It was only a matter of time before he found a weapon and began attacking. So she sat down and focused on the vibrations in the ground. She could feel everything from the tiniest ant moving across a field to the largest Rahi inside a cave if she focused.

"What's she doing?" Sicarius asked the Turaga.

"She's watching and waiting." The Turaga replied.

"How is she watching something when her eyes are closed?" Sicarius asked.

"Keep your eyes open and you might figure it out." The Turaga answered with a grin.

Yrun had found a throwing disc and a javelin from crawling around. He knew Roan had her tomahawks with her and that she wasn't likely to trade them out for anything. So all he needed to do now was find her and complete his strategy.

Roan had felt Yrun moving around from his starting position to the far left field and prepared to defend herself. She stood up drew her tomahawks, watching where he was hiding.

Yrun heard Roan get up and draw her weapons, so he knew that she was prepared for his attack. He was skilled with a sword, proficient with a javelin. But he was terrible at throwing discs from far away. To compensate for that, he aimed for the nearest pillar in a way that he hoped it would ricochet its way towards Roan and distract her temporarily. He narrowed his eyes, held his breath, and hurled the disc across the field.

Roan saw the disc fly from behind a pillar and make its way across the field. She watched its pattern of flight and readied her tomahawks. When it was coming straight for her, she blocked it and sent it flying back towards Yrun.

Yrun watched Roan deflect the disc and readied himself to strike as something caught his eye; a small shimmer in between two rocks across from him. Had he missed something while he searched his side of the field for equipment? He squinted to try and make out what it was, and found that it was a sword. Yrun grinned as he foolishly stepped out of his cover and right into the path of the returning disc.

Roan watched as Yrun stepped out from his hiding place and walk towards a weapon. But before he even made it halfway there, the disc struck him on the side of his head and sent him sprawling on the ground. Roan then started walking towards the dazed Yrun.

Yrun head was throbbing. What hit him? He looked around to try to see, but all he found was the disc. There was no way that Roan could've deflected it in such a way that that could've happened. He looked back at where Roan was standing and saw that she was gone! He frantically got up and looked around, seeing nothing. He decided to continue making his way to the sword.

Roan watched Yrun from behind a pillar. He had started walking towards the weapon again. She jumped out and threw both of her tomahawks at Yrun.

Yrun had reached the sword and picked it up, never noticing the tomahawks flying towards him until he felt a sudden pain in his legs. He looked down and saw that the training tomahawks that Roan was using for the battle had stuck to his leg armor. Although they were fake, they still hurt a lot. Yrun cumpled to the ground writhing in agony.

Roan walked over to Yrun, picked up the sword and completed the match by holding it to his chest armor. She helped Yrun get up, and then exited the courtyard through the observation room. When she walked in, she noticed that Sicarius had been watching the match with the Turaga.

"Oh, I wasn't aware there would be an audience." She said. "Is Yrun a friend of yours?"

"Yes." Sicarius answered "We hang out a lot."

"Has he ever fought you in a simulation similar to this?" Roan asked

"No, we only play chess." Sicarius said. "He's a great strategist, and wins most of the time."

"So he says." Roan said "Can you tell me the mistake he made that cost him the match?"

"He acted before thinking." Sicarius replied "Instead of taking the time to study the field and see the oncoming disc, he walked right out in the open."

"Precisely." Roan said "You said you play chess, correct?"

"Yes." Sicarius answered.

"Would you like to play a quick game?" Roan asked

"Of course!" Sicarius said excitedly.
