Real-world Rahi counterparts

Recommended Posts

Something that was on my mind is that I'm not sure what certain rahi are supposed to be (and before you say "they're rahi", I mean what is their real-world inspiration). I know stuff like "Rama are wasps, Muaka are big cats, Kane-Ra are bulls, etc), but they're some that I can't identify from the shape alone. For example: the Hapaka. It sounds like a dog fro the description, but the set doesn't look much like anything. Other examples are Klakk, Parakrekks, Rock Raptors, Colony Drones; do they have any real world counterparts? Do you guys have any rahi thatbyou can't figure out what they are?

The Kanohi, Kardas and Tahtorak are still big lizards. Specifically, dragons. Blade burrowers are moles. I'll think.up.more later.

Elemental Rahi in Gen2, anyone? A write-up for an initial video for a G2 plot

I really wish everyone would stop trying to play join the dots with Gen 1 and Gen 2 though,it seems there's a couple new threads everyday and often they're duplicates of already existing conversations! Or simply parallel them with a slightly new 'twist'! Gen 2 is NEW, it is NOT Gen 1 and it is NOT a continuation. Outside of the characters we already have I personally don't want to see ANY old characters return. I think it will cheapen the whole experience to those of us familiar with the original line...

the great thing about rock raptors and chute lurkers and kraawa and stuff, i think. is that they lack an exact counterpart.

after all, what kind of good fictional world just has a buncha re-hashed earth-beasts with no weird whatevers to spice it up? :u

(Bionicle still has an unusually tight relationship with spiders/arachnids/arthropods though. i can think of at least one from each year.)

What I find interesting about Visorak is that while they look like spiders with (only) 4 lefs, they have a society similar to ants really with (kinda) different classes for various purposes.

Anyway, I think the Rock Raptor is meant to be more like a Veliceraptor, Chute Lurkers are more like Dragonfly Larvae (look em up, they nasty), the Kraawa are like Brontosaurus maybe?

Anyway, here's the rest of my list:

Artakha Bull = Centaur

Crystal Climber = Gekko

Dikapi = Emu

Dust Darter = Flee

Gadunka = Angler Fish?

Hapaka = Sheep/Goat

Keetongu = oneeyed Sasquach/ Orangutan

Kirikori Nui = Grasshopper/ Cricket

Lava Crawler = giant Beetle

Niazesk = Hornet

Pokawi = Kiwi

Protodrake = Seal/ Dolphin mix

The Rock = Giant Land Anemone

Zivon = Skorpion

Idk that's just some of them, but I just went through the list and there are definitely some Rahi that don't strike me as anything I can name iff the top of my head. :P

Hur hur, I see what you did there ;)

I like the Rahi that don't have counterparts such as Colony Drones and Parakrekks. They make Bionicle unique.

Yet those that do also give the fan-writers something to build on that's familiar to them. Everyone can find out how a bear (ash bear) or an ostrich/emu (dikapi) will act, allowing people to get a handle on how their equivalents would behave. It's much better than having every animal behave like a dog (energy hound), because the author's never interacted with any other creature.

According to the original LEGO Club URLs for its instructions, the Hapaka was supposed to resemble an elephant, but its role in the story ended up being more dog-like (then again, so did Pewku's :P ).

I think starting in 2003, there was a greater effort to make new Rahi into unique alien creatures rather than specifically mechanical versions of real-world creatures. The Gukko switched from a hawk or vulture-like design to a giant hummingbird with four wings and no legs. The Kikanalo introduced in 2004 was sort of like a cross between a rhino, a dinosaur, and a kangaroo. Kraawa was slightly rabbit-like in its design and characterization, but not as obviously inspired by one particular creature as the Rahi from 2001. And the 2005 Rahi like Keetongu and the Gate Guardian were all over the place from a design perspective! When they did borrow inspiration from real-life animals, it was not always obvious which animals inspired them.

Many post-2005 Rahi, like Lava Hawk, Dagger Spider, Kardas Dragon, and Pit War Tortoise, had much more obvious inspiration than the ones introduced in 2004 and 2005, and many even had names that made the inspiration obvious. As for those whose names weren't so revealing, Zyglak is pretty dinosaur-like, Niazesk insect-like, and I always thought of the Manutri as penguin-like on account of their habitat, anatomy, and color scheme.

It's not like the 2001 Rahi were always totally obvious in their inspiration, though. I never quite figured out what the Tarakava were supposed to resemble — they were probably inspired more by various sea monsters from mythology and popular culture, such as sea serpents or Godzilla, than by real creatures.

Actually, Colony Drones have an obvious real-world parallel: they're aphids. Many ant colonies actually farm aphids for their honeylike secretions -- which further strengthens the comparison someone up above made between Visorak and ants. They really have very little to do with spiders, besides the web-spinning. :P

Microscopic animals are pretty weird. I wouldn't call a specific kind, but I'd certainly say that Gadunka was a marine invertebrate of some sort before the MoL 'cursed' it.

Proto drakes are clearly plesiosaurs, and the dagger spider looks more like a harvestman to me. The Mountain is more like a mold than any animal I can think of, unless there are predatory corals.

Yes, somebody else thinks the Visorak can be ants. :P

And good catch with the aphids! They threw memoff because they're little bipedals.
