Although I believe they did the right thing, could it have gone on a few more years? What would have been different with the storyline? Should they have made the storyline simpler? The 1st Shadow Posted October 18, 2014 Share Posted October 18, 2014 Well, for one thing, we would have gotten at least 2 more movies, and the story would have gone on to the Valley of the Maze, and then later to Bota Magna. Potentially two more years, which would have been fine, in my opinion. But still, from a marketing standpoint, I think they made the right choice. Banana Gunz Posted October 18, 2014 Share Posted October 18, 2014 I think Bionicle had gone on for so long that making it last would be more effort than they wanted (hence the decision made), but I do believe it could've been saved. An early introduction of CCBS could've freshened things up set-wise. Story-wise though... I think 2009 and 2010 would've have to have been done differently. It was a great opportunity for some fresh and interesting story-telling, but it couldn't decide how close it wanted to stay with the previous years. But if we couldn't redo the 2009/10 arc, then a huge change in setting would've been due. A time-jump for 2011 could've re freshened the story for new audiences. But again, for the same reasons Lego isn't doing it for 2015, it probably was more specific effort than they wanted to give. I dunno, it was the kind of line that needed marketing success to draw new people in, and that wasn't going to happen with an old line no matter what they did. But probably fixing the oft-mentioned and well-known problems with the line might have extended it a year or so. I doubt it would ever keep going continuously long after that, though, nor should it really -- as I often point out, it was always portrayed as a story likely to have a beginning, middle and end; Mata Nui had to be awoken and the good guys win someday right? At least for a while. And Gen1 could have kept going after a break with a return. LEGO just chose to go a new direction. Either option was valid. I also heard they were going to release the baterra as 2010 sets. IMO they could've helped Bionicle to bounce back if released. I for one would've bought about a dozen of them. J46 Nui Posted October 19, 2014 Share Posted October 19, 2014 (edited) Well, there was going to be a year spent in the Valley of the Maze, and I would bet there would be at least one or two years on Bota Magna, and a year or half a year for the conclusion. So I think it would have ended anyway around 2012 or 2013. I really want to see what the story would have been if it wasn't cut short, and hopefully one day that will be explored. On top of that, we would have gotten several more movies (The Legend Reborn was announced as the first in a set of Bionicle Movies). But judging from the quality of TLR and the HF stuff that followed, those movies probably would not be much good anyway. I am more interested in what the story could have been then what the sets would be (but the Elemental Lords and robot dinosaurs do sound like they would be really interesting sets). Luckily, exploring that would be far easier and cheaper then ever seeing what the sets would be like. Maybe as some of the new fans of the reboot get interested in the older stuff there will be some more demand from it. About Lego cancelling Bionicle not being a mistake, I agree that at the time it wasn't. But with hindsight being 20/20, Hero Factory never sold as well as Bionicle did on its worst day. I feel like if they did continue Bionicle for just a few more years, they could have gotten a little bit more money out of it. But what I don't think is a mistake even now, is that there did need to be a good bit of time between the end of the original run of Bionicle and a reboot. The original story did need to end sometime and be refreshed so that the fan base could grow again. I for one would've bought about a dozen of them.Yes, the understanding was that the original plan was for the Ignition arc to last 3 years and end in 2008 with the Inika team saving Mata Nui's life at the end of that year. Then we would have gotten a 3 year arc on the Nuva waking up Mata Nui, and that would have presumably been the end? Maybe. Instead, of course, the Ignition arc ended in 2007 and the Nuva awakening Mata Nui thing got done in 2008. Then the plan was for the Bara Magna arc to last 3 years, first on Bara Magna, then the Valley of the Maze, and finally Bota Magna, where eventually we would have...somehow...come back to what ended up being the 2010 story? But presumably less rushed. Who knows. The fact that Lego didn't actually follow up on any of this just shows that they didn't think that was going to help the line any. And honestly I doubt any one set would have solved anything in the big scheme of things. Though the baterra sets as seen in the comics did seem pretty cool, they were never going to do much to save Bionicle. Not on their own.
