Breaking the Streak

Toa Alvarno

Recommended Posts

When Bionicle ended--or rather, as it was ending--I began to lose interest in collecting figures, especially since I was entering high school and was embarrassed to have a collections of kids' toys on display. I went years without even thinking about collecting toys or even Bionicle for that matter. Honestly, I was a little satisfied with myself, feeling that I'd grown up and matured beyond toys.

Now that they're bringing it back, I can't help myself from getting all obsessed over this fandom again with burning intentions to get all six of the new Toa. Do you guys feel the same way and are you a little torn between your feelings like I am? What are your thoughts?

Honestly, BIONICLE ended at the worst time possible for me. My first BIONICLE set was from 2006 (Iwas 7 at the time). I didn't get into the story until late 2007 with the comics, and didn't decide BIONICLE my favorite line until late 2008 / early 2009. By the time I took the full dive into the entirety, 2010 was just around the corner.

I was only 10 when BIONICLE ended, the perfect age for the line if you ask me. Because of this, my love for the line was put on hold, almost into a sort of limbo until it was leaked / rumored that it would return in 2015. Hopefully, with the return of the line, I can "fall out" in a natural manner.

Holy carp Karera, sort out that horrible font would you?! It looks like something Ehlek spat up... And who on earth gave you Lego when you were less than a year old? Was it a subtle plan to bump you off by any chance? Poison not subtle enough, let's choke him with a combination of tiny bricks and fat little uncontrollable fingers :P

Edit : Forgot to actually respond to the post as intended!!! I was already 16 (I think) when the first si Toa came out. We ducked out of school (don't do it kids!) and a friend and I got a Toa each then went and fought them at the park... I got a bunch of sets over the following years so arguably I was already too old for them when I started collecting. I know I had the Mata, Nuva and a bunch of Bohrok at any rate, some of the rahi and a boxor too!

I stopped collecting when I left home to join the forces, left all my stuff behind which was packed into boes when my folks separated and moved house Funnily enough I didn't get back into collecting again until I already had children of my own, 2011 or something I think so probably just as they ended the line! I now have every set there ever was and when the brand relaunches I'll be getting all the new ones too so I would suggest it doesn't matter too much how old you are. If you like something (for any reason) just go for it. It doesn't matter what people think about the things you like, you'll still like them just the same. By not allowing yourself to enjoy them nobody wins...

Toys are typically viewed as 'for kids only' but in truth, there isn't anything about them that makes a person inferior for enjoying them. You don't "grow" out of liking toys, you just change out of it. And if you change back? Who cares? As long as you're happy.

I intend to get one or two Toa myself, even though I don't have as much of a toy interest as I did all those years ago. I don't have much money, but if I did, I'd almost certainly get all six too.

My advice: Don't be torn. Be proud. You don't have to run around in public proclaiming your love of Bionicle, but if someone should challenge you on the issue, stand firm. What are they gonna do? Sue you? Execute you?

Enjoy Bionicle however you like, and the same goes for life in general. So long as it doesn't harm anyone, have fun.

Llike Karera, I was only ten years old when BIONICLE ended. I got into the line in late 2004, for my fifth birthday. Now being fifteen this year, I have no worries. A lot of my friends still love LEGO, and with The LEGO Movie out this year, with mainstream interest in the company, I can talk about it more openly in my circles, I think. I haven't lost interest at all; in fact, my interest in it has actually grown since then. More ready than ever for the reboot!

I'm an AFOL and couldn't be more excited to buy the new sets!  :D LEGO is my main hobby and I've been collecting all sorts of themes like Star Wars, Super Heroes, City, etc. for my whole life. It's a very natural thing for me, and my family and best friends embrace it. That's me though, and while I'll be collecting all of the new sets, it doesn't mean it's the best thing for you

Your expression of fandom could certainly include purchasing all of the new Toa, but you're not limited to that as an outlet. If you're artistic, then maybe fanart or fanfiction could fun to try. Or if you're more in the mood to reminisce or discuss Bionicle, BZPower is a great place to express your excitement with fellow fans.

My advice is, come 2015, purchase your favorite Toa. Build it, enjoy it, display it in a cool pose, and see how you feel after that. You may be satisfied and not need to collect more OR you may keep going and enjoy some new adventures with Bionicle.  ;)

My "streak" was broken as soon as Hero Factory entered its second year and introduced the new building system. Up until that point I had been content eliminating Constraction sets from my budget altogether, thinking that now that Bionicle was over I could put that money toward other traditional Lego themes. But the CCBS drew me back in and held me there, so for me the new Bionicle is just going to continue that trend.

I kind of stopped paying attention to everything Lego related during the Breakout year. I did get a pair of Toxic Reapers but I never actually built anything with them. I was totally on board for the Ordeal of Fire sets and I also got a few from the Savage Planet lineup, but after that I moved on to other things for a while. Evo's mech and Splitter Beast were the first sets I bought in like, over two years. I will say though, for me it was never a matter of being "too old" or whatever - just a shift of interests.

I tried to collect as many Bionicle sets as I could up to 2008. It was after that year when I stopped buying them, with the exception of Tahu Stars in 2010. Though I will be getting new sets again when the new Toa come out in one of my local stores. :)

Everyone is one choice away from being the bad guy in another person's story.

Absolutely. I'm active on BZPower again for the first time in 4 years. I recently purchased Kopaka Nuva, Matoro Mahri and Takanuva 08 from Bricklink. I rebuilt a bunch of broken Bionicle sets last weekend and am in the process of rereading all of the story material from 2001-2010.

I can safely say I am hyped beyond belief. :)

As for conflicted thoughts... HEEEECK NO! I'm gonna get all six of those Toa in a heartbeat.

I've followed Bionicle since its beginning, and whilst my love of the line declined in the later years as it became increasingly difficult to follow or enjoy, I've never totally lost interest or left BZPower for especially long. Now, I'm generally impressed by the new sets and I'm looking forward to seeing what the return will bring in terms of story.

Whilst an interest in toys isn't something I'd tell every last person about, there's nothing wrong with it inherently.

I mostly got Bonkles as gifts, so when i got "too old" to obtain them on the holidays, it kinda sputtered out. (Krika was my only mistika set, zesk for 2009.1 stronius for 2009.2...) I've always kinda been short on money of my own.

If i get cash money before 2015, i'll get back into it, if not, i'll continue on my bionicle-less way. :u

I always feel that there really should be no age limit on anything like this, because what people enjoy doing is completely their choice, I hate things such as age ranges or youre too old for this or that, i just feel that its personal preference and if youre interested in something then continue to be interested until it bores you i guess :)

I quit collecting in 2008, I believe. Got Tanma and Lewa Phantoka and they were just so disappointing. I did get the Rockoh T3, which was pretty darn sweet, but that was the only positive set experience I had that year. After that, the only set I bought was the Zesk, and that was only for the four claws.

HOLY WOW it's OnuaNut.

Anyway: a part of me really wants to buy Onua (my favorite Toa), but sets are so expensive now and I am but a poor student. I'm actually more worried about getting sucked back into the story than the sets, though—I love Bionicle, but getting all into storyline and theories is a huge time sink.

Hm, I haven't bought BIONICLE since 2005? I haven't bought anything LEGO since maybe 2008, but I did get some Power Rangers Megabloks stuff a couple of years back. Anyway, i'm 24 and love collecting action figures. This new BIONICLE line is my first time getting excited for a new toy line in years, so I am all in and excited. Now to find some room in my man cave without the wife yelling at me, lol.

I threw away probably a thousand dollars worth of Bionicles when I decided I needed to grow up and move on. It still haunts me to this day. All the money my mother spent on them doesn't make me feel any better. Now that they're coming back I really want to get back into collecting them. I'm older now so I really don't care what people think of my interests. I plan on getting all the new sets and putting them on display.

I have zero conflicted thoughts. When Bionicle was running, I was a complete story nut (still am) but CCBS and BZP got me into sets. I wanted 2008-09 Bionicle sets and didn't get them, so it many respects I'm making up for lost time. I got nothing to lose.

What is CCBS? I keep seeing it everywhere.

I feels you so hard man. I had become embarrised of my Bionicle collection because it was so huge and took up nearly my whole closet, I had originally planned to give them all to my kids someday but I ended up giving them all away, to my best friend's nephew who got a bunch, a random little kid who lived Bionicle on craigslist and this girl Tia's younger brother.

Now that they are back I want to buy them again, but I've decided to just buy Tahu for myself and buy the other Toa for kids in my life so I can watch them build them and help if needed and watch a new generation enjoy Bionicle. I will def be keeping up with the story tho.

I got into Bionicle in 2009. I loved the sets and I loved the story even more. Then it ended next year and I was very sad. I kept up with any story details from 2011 and 2012 but then that stopped too. I bought the first HF sets then stopped buying Lego altogether cause nothing really piqued my interest. Then I started developing an appreciation for CCBS, particularly the Breakout and BA sets, then this happened and I am extremely happy to be back. This even rekindled my love for System. No conflicting thoughts here either.

I haven't bought any since 2006, I fully expect I'll buy all 13 of the sets we've seen so far (I could have never have done that when I was 10!), I think I'll make them rewards for completing Uni work  :D

I've always liked collecting things, and LEGO is certainly an area of creativity that I'm good at - my writing is mediocre & I have no musical talent, but building things: I love it as well. A hobby is a hobby is a hobby. I'm very excited!

As it is I liked many of the books as well & I will probably read them, they might not be the best writing but that doesn't mean they aren't enjoyable, - in fact there have only been 3 pieces of FanFiction I've read in my life out of actual interest (as opposed to the infamous My Immortal Harry Potter fic.) was Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, one which I won't mention here, & a short story about Lehvak-Kal waking up in space! Please don't judge me  :begging: ;)

I entirely agree with Axilus Prime, but this is more directed at anyone that has any worries like this (If I understood Toa Alvarno correctly):

are you a little torn between your feelings like I am? What are your thoughts?

If I understand you correctly; you'r worried about your maturity and interest in a toy-line? I hope you don't mind me dropping this big quote (& I really don't mean to be condescending):

"Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." - C. S. Lewis

<rant>This isn't meant as an attack on you or anyone (by me anyway), regardless of anyones age sometimes we are mature sometimes we are not, and we rarely show a continuous level of maturity; now just because someone looks down on someone else for enjoying something that is aimed at a younger age group / not as deep or what ever you may have, this is a pretty common part of not only becoming mature but maturity; worrying that one isn't is fine, but generally it's great if people don't dwell on this question on the one thing - There are some very mature people I know but they pause before making a joke wondering if it is to immature; and sometimes they decide no these people won't get upset about it and it is funny, it doesn't matter that it's a type of comedy shared by someone less mature etc. etc. </rant> Sorry if that was to condescending; I'm struggling to organise these thoughts into a succinct manner...

For people still at School or seem other place where people can be suboptimal to each other regularly, it can be harder but it depends on you and so many other factors I won't get into that, but regardless of who knows or anything else: I really wish no one ever worried about liking something. It's good to be able to see something good or enjoy something IMO :)
