Preface

"Wake up!", she yells, clearly infuriated by something you've done, although you can't remember what.

"I'm awake!", you spit out. "What've I done?"

As she mumbles on about how you got yourselves lost, your eyes open. You see her face. Your eyes align with hers. Bolit, your fellow Toa, is beautiful. But you're too tired to talk.

"You're not even listening!", she shrieks. "I give up!"

...

Two hours ago, something happened, but when you finally get out of bed, you can't remember what. You step outside your tent and see them, your team. Their names don't come to you immediately. When you do figure them out, Meera, Toa of Ice, looks up. He sees you.

"They look mad," you think, but don't know why. "I'd better take a walk."

You start walking away from camp, hoping the location stays with you.

The Acie, Mask of Forgetfulness, isn't very helpful, seeing as you can't remember how to use it. Or where you're from. Even your name is lost.

And it's getting worse. The others are calling it serious identity crisis. You think.

Walking is fun, you decide. Even with your wobbliness and unsteady legs, you're a fast walker. You try to think of being a Matoran. Bits and pieces, the pet name of your favorite Kohlii stick, your worst enemy's name, comes back. This mask really is a curse.

As you circle around Ceres Rock, you can see camp. You can only hope the next lapse won't come too soon.

Finally, the others turn to look at you. That's when your mind goes blank. There's something blocking the thoughts, as if they're locked away, in a deep sleep.

As the others approach, you break down in a fit of sadness. Your eyes close, hoping for relief. You don't find it. You can't remember what it feels like. Who are these people trying to help me stand? Why are they here? Your mind is unknowing. You lie down, fists clenched, eyes wet.

    It came too soon.

Chapter 1

As you lie there, motionless, on the ground, you begin to sob. You try to remember a happier time, when the world was more familiar. You feel insane, the mask is destroying you from the inside.

The others, whoever they are, introduce themselves and explain it shouldn't happen for another two hours, hopefully. Their names were Bolit, Toa of water; Meera, Toa of ice; Jagu, Toa of fire; Hakki, Toa of Stone; and Woel, Toa of Earth. Apparently, you are Kallet, Toa of air, but don't believe them, only faintly remembering what Toa means.

"What happened?" you ask. "I don't remember."

"Another one of your lapses, you'll get back in the groove," Woel says.

"Where am I?" you ask him, feebly.

"Well, seeing as that's Ceres Rock, and that's a desert, we're somewhere in between Ceres Rock and a desert. Of course, you had to lose the map," says Bolit, a beautiful evil.

"Calm down, it's not his fault," says Hakki. "It's the mask. Meera, explain."

"Well, it's kind of a long story, it's boring too, after telling it 5,641 times." says Meera, in a monotone. "As a Matoran, you had the greatest of memories, you were to be named Recordkeeper, but the Makuta, enemies of ours', wouldn't have it. Just as you were about to get the mask of memory, they switched it out with the Acie, mask of forgetfulness, a detrimental mask, forged by evil metalworkers. As it was placed on your head, you started forgetting your life, and yourself. Over time, it got worse. You'd have lapses every couple hours, that erased your memory of almost everything. Our current mission is to fix that. We need to find the mask of memory, but after trying for six years, we've come to a decision. You're slowing us down. Plus, you're really not helping all that much."

"You're right..." you mumble. "Dispose of me."

"Trust us, we'll come back with your mask. Your real mask." Bolit says, doubtfully.

...

As you enter the city of Le-Koro, which you believe is your homeplace, they take you to a building, apparently meant to take care of people.

As they're walking out, you hear Bolit, whisper, "Don't forget me."

"I won't," you say, but she's already gone.
