Hapori Tohu
LEGO Ideas has announced the results for the first LEGO Ideas project review for 2014. The winners are the LEGO Bird Project by DeTomaso and The Big Bang Theory by Alatariel and GlenBricker! That's not all, though, as LEGO has not yet decided on whether one of the Doctor Who projects will be turned into a set or not. Some great projects have won once again and it's also nice to see both a licensed and an original project being turned into sets. Congratulations to the winners and of course to the projects who didn't make the last step for reaching 10k supporters and being fantastic projects anyway - it's just that LEGO can only produce so many. xccj
Wait, what? Big Bang Theory passed?? I like the show and all, but that model just looks... not good. I guess we'll see how it sells, but not one I'll be investing in. The birds, on the other hand, will be a must have for sure! Aanchir
(copied and pasted from my comments on Brickset) I like The Big Bang Theory, though I don't watch it religiously — just when my parents happen to have it on. To be honest, I don't get why so many people find it insulting, as it shows a wider variety of "geek" characters than many shows that just pile every single negative stereotype on a single side character's shoulders. Plus its less geeky characters like Penny are just as often the butt of jokes as its geekier characters like Raj, Leonard, and Amy. Also, from what I've seen, it has had some surprisingly good character development. In a lot of the sitcoms I grew up watching like Seinfeld and Home Improvement, I didn't get a real sense that the characters or their relationships with one another were nearly as dynamic. But in The Big Bang Theory, even without being extremely moralistic about it, I get a sense that the characters do in fact learn and grow. So I get the sense that people who boil it down to "a show that makes fun of nerds" aren't really getting the big picture. I also think it's an impressive reflection of society that a show like this can be so successful. Years ago, it might have seemed a bit novel to people when Seinfeld cracked jokes about Superman. But The Big Bang Theory makes jokes about all kinds of nerdy topics ranging from Star Trek to Green Lantern to actual science-related celebrities such as Neil DeGrasse Tyson. The fact that these kinds of references aren't considered too weird for American primetime viewing audiences really shows how "nerdy" is becoming the new "normal" — things like video games, superhero movies, and yes, even LEGO are no longer experiences specific to kids or to a niche audience of adult fans. I do wonder if it's the best brand fit for LEGO, as some of its humor can be very adult. The Simpsons, at least, is a franchise that has had plenty of time to prove it has all-ages appeal, and many people who experienced it as children can now vouch for that as adults. The Big Bang Theory, as a newer franchise, will probably face much sharper public scrutiny, and to be honest I'm very surprised the LEGO Group OKed it — when it reached review I would have considered it dead on arrival. I'm sure a set of the main living room set as depicted in the proposal would be the best subject matter for the final model. I wonder how many characters they can manage to incorporate. The birds project is also awesome, glad it passed. And I'm very curious what the future might be like for LEGO Doctor Who. It's interesting to note that so far, of the communities I've been to, BZPower is the one to react to these review results with the most hostility. I don't really like what that says about us... it never hurts to laugh at yourself from time to time. That's what I'm sure the show's writers do — it's hard to crack jokes about geek culture without being a part of it. 2 Quote Latest MOC: PAIGE (Prototype Artificial Intelligence, Gynoid Expression)

I just find it a little weird how franchises like The Legend of Zelda or Portal coud've been rejected, while TBBT got approved. It's not just LEGO's fault in these situations. It is very, very likely to be the IP owners either not agreeing or able to come to agreeable terms. That's the problem with all of the licensed suggestions and what makes original ideas easier to handle, like the birds one that just got approved (which I still find neat for any avian fans out there, though it does not personally interest me). ~|ET|~ 1 Quote E-T... Vorahk1Panrahk2
Good for Birds. It's a great project with some great models and I can't wait to see what LEGO will offer for it. On the topic of The Big Bang Theory, I echo everyone else: I can't for the life of me imagine how it got through. I guess it has some nice creative use of parts, but other than that it's a bland vignette. I suppose that could describe the Research Institute as well, but at least those vignettes celebrated something worthwhile, and featured minifigures doing something besides sitting around a table. I dunno, maybe I'm just biased here since I don't watch the show. I'm sure the set will have it's audience. fishers64
I'm not a fan of sitcoms. That canned laugh drives me up the wall with how fake it is, so yeah. I like the idea behind the Birds project, but I doubt I would actually get the set. That sort of thing sounds like a regal display piece, not really a toy. I prefer my Lego to be something I actually build with, not a display piece that does nothing. I do have some bird-loving friends, but they're not Lego fans. So I don't really like either of these projects, but I understand that there are people out there who do. That was the project I thought had the smallest chance of passing. When I first watched the video, and they said there were 2 projects that passed, I was expecting both Lego Doctor Who sets or something. Then when they said "Lego Birds" had passed, I thought the second one would be Lego Doctor Who. Nope! The moment they said "Big Bang Theory" I went... It has tons of adult jokes, and prominent characters like Moe and Barney had to conveniently overlooked when making the minifig line due to being a bartender and a barfly. Apparently TLG thinks the faults of The Big Bang Theory are similarly possible to overlook, somehow. ~B~
