Set Review: 70779 Protector of Stone

Protector Stone Mask

All the excitement for Bionicle's return next year leads us to the next set review, highlighting the Protector of Stone. Little is known right now about this little guy, but perhaps his transparent neon green limbs and brown armor will make up for that. Read, and watch, on to find out if he blends into the sand or stand out in your collection.

I'm not as much of a fan of the color scheme in real life. I really wish it was trans-yellow, not trans-neon green. The brown is just an odd color in general.

Still, I think this guy is on my wish list. I do like his design, though he's still kind of pudgy.

Great review, definitely really highlighted everything awesome about the Master of Stone. The weapon is really cool and I love the stinger on the Skull Spider (scorpion? xD ). Glad brown is back as well, but to be honest that colour scheme is kind of bugging me. The trans green doesn't look all that great with it, I would have much preferred yellow.

Thanks again!

Yep, the lack of trans-yellow is disappointing, but the set does look great with that trans green anyways. I am relived that this Protector has elbow articulation, since the Protector of Ice made me worried that they'd all be stunted in their arm poses.  I'm a little baffled that they seem to be using two different shades of brown for the armor and the technic connector, but I'm sure Lego has their reasons :P

These reviews just keep on coming! :)

Anyways, I really like the staff with this set. It looks really cool, especially with the trans-green pieces on it. The color scheme on the set itself is not one of my favorites though, but I still think that this set is cool overall.

I wasn't expecting a stinger to be on the Skull Spider though. I guess that helps this particular one stand out from some the others in the new wave of sets. Does anyone know if the Skull Spiders from any of the other sets also have stingers? I didn't notice a stinger on any of the spiders from the previous reviews. I'm just curious if this one is unique or if some of the other sets have a Skull Spider like this one too.

Anyways, thanks for the review!

I believe Pohatu and the Protector of Stone are the only sets whose Skull Spiders include tails/stingers.

Looks much better out of the box, after seeing this review my opinion of him has vastly improved. I hope he is Onewa (I hope all the protectors will turn out to be the original turaga).

I think if the protectors were the original Turaga they would have used their names or told us already.

I actually really don't like the transparent neon green. :/ It looks very bad to me, especially coupled with brown. The stock photography where it looks yellow on both Pohatu and the Protector of Stone here looks much better. They have easily become my least favorite in terms of appearance alone.

I also thought that this protector and I had trans yellow bones, but when I showed my little brother the artwork on Bionicle.com, he gave me a very good reason as to why Lego wouldn't make them actually trans yellow and brown. Toilet humor removed. -B6

I agree that yellow would look better with brown, but oh well... maybe I will get used to his brown-with-trans-lime color scheme after a while :P Interesting that the Skull spider that comes with this set spots a stinger!

I wonder, in terms of posing, how flexible are the Protector's arms when both his hands are connected to his weapon?

P.S. Is it just me or the Skull spider "mask" looks a bit like Chirox's Kanohi?

Looks smaller than I had hoped for $10.

Yeah, as far as height is concerned, the Protectors are only about the same size as the 2008–2009 Matoran and Agori sets. But with that said, their bodies alone (sans weapons) use about twice as many parts as those sets, and the sets as a whole have more than four times as many pieces — 69.5 pieces on average instead of 14.3 pieces on average.

Speaking of piece count, one thing I ought to mention — the piece count of this set is actually either 67 pieces or 73 pieces, depending on whether you count the six extra ammo pieces. The press release on the Brickjournal site lists 67 pieces on the box art but 73 pieces in the body text. 67 is consistent with the inventory in the back of the instructions, which does not include the spare ammo, but the fact that the body text lists 73 pieces suggests that there was a deliberate decision to include six spare ammo pieces in addition to the one unlisted spare that you would normally expect. When the sets are released in North America, I wonder which piece count will appear on the packages and which will appear on the LEGO Shop website.

The Protector of Stone is definitely a cool design. The lack of back armor is a bit regrettable, but also understandable since the Protector of Stone has the highest piece count of all six Protectors (and bizarrely, a higher piece count than Pohatu). It's no surprise that might have necessitated cutting some corners. The weapon in this set is a great design, and the color scheme is very stylish. Other than the lack of back armor, the Protector of Stone mostly shares the same general build as the Protector of Jungle, with one main exception — his leg armor is mounted on the front of his legs rather than the sides, giving him a slightly bowlegged stance. I think the look suits him. The spikes on the right shoulder are also a nice touch.

One thing that puzzles me is that his eyes are Tr. Light Blue. All the other Protectors have the same eye color as the corresponding Toa, so you'd expect him to have Tr. Fluore. Green eyes. Perhaps the designers didn't want his eyes to match the blended color of his mask or the color of his bones, but the Protector of Ice (with shells, bones, and a blended mask in Tr. Light Blue) seems to contradict that.

One thing you said that could be a bit confusing — you say the set introduces "a new CCBS color: brown!" While the specific Dark Orange color of the Protector of Stone and Pohatu Master of Stone is indeed brand-new to the CCBS, the color brown in general is not. Both Ogrum from 2013 and CHI Mungus from 2014 featured Reddish Brown CCBS shells, and Maula's Ice Mammoth Stomper featured a Dark Brown CCBS shell.

But in spite of that, great review and great photos!

A fantastic set. I really love the protectors and this one is one of my favorites. It may have sounded crazy some years ago, but I think the brown sets have one of the most vibrant color schemes. :P I'm totally fine with trans-neon green being used instead of yellow - it makes for a more interesting combination actually, though I definitely wouldn't have minded yellow either. The brown is also a very nice shade, better than any of the others used for BIONICLE before. Pohatu's was a bit too dark and not vibrant enough, the Metru brown looked like mud (not sure how they ever thought that was a nice color) and Avak's was more vibrant than Pohatu's (my favorite BIONICLE shade of brown with tan up to this point), but I was always fond of burnt orange. Anyway, thank you for the review! :)

Wonderful set. I thought the green was actually yellow, but I'll have to see it in person to decide whether or not I like it. I guess Pohatu also uses trans-green?

I can't wait to build with the new parts...should be interesting to have 50 Skull Spider legs, and all those translucent pieces. Also the ranged weapon looks like a ton of fun to play with.

Thanks for the pictures and the review.

At first I was quite against the idea of buying any of the protectors, but I am not that sure anymore.

The protector of stone looks quite good overall.

My biggest issue with the protectors is the mask. It looks great, but it is like looking at six people with the same face. It seems they lack in distinct personalities.

Um, don't they look cute in general? It's not just the mask, it's the limb shapes and the proportions. The gun takes away from that effect, but it's still there.

It was worse watching the NYCC video BZP did because the guy presenting the Protector of Fire gave him such a cute voice. If that's the voice we're getting in the cartoon, a mild target audience expansion may occur.

I think placing them all next to each other with all having the same mask makes them even cuter. :P

That's interesting. It makes me think that their region on Okoto may get a different kind of Skull Spiders than the others in the story. Maybe they are 'Skull Scorpions,' as Nidhiki of the Shadows kind of said.

Anyways, thanks for the reply!

Do we have a team line-up image of them yet? Because if Lego doesn't give us one, someone should make one. :P

Anyway, I'm not a fan of the Protector of Stone - probably my least favorite of the batch. He just strikes me as the Jungle guy with a worse color scheme. :shrugs:

While I'll definitely be picking up the set to get more of the dark orange shells, I echo of the comments that trans yellow would have been preferred to trans neon green. I think that would have looked much better on the marbled mask, and additionally we would have then had that new staff/elemental spear piece existing in the common trio of fire, ice, and electricity. Oh well.

I do, however, really like how the skull spider mask comes in dark blue, and how our desert-dwelling characters very appropriately get a skull scorpion instead of a skull spider.

What's worse about the color scheme? It's six colors either way (seven if you count the eye color, nine or ten if you count the weapons). And arguably, I think the Protector of Stone's color scheme is more organized than the Protector of Jungle's. The Protector of Jungle only uses Bright Green for his mask and only uses Bright Yellowish Green for the vines on his feet, whereas the Protector of Stone has at least four parts in each color except Black (which is used centrally for the torso beam).

Technically, we already DO have the energy piece in that elemental trio, because it's not actually a new piece. The Tr. Yellow and Tr. Red fire variant is used in ten sets (twelve if you count the new Tahu and the Protector of Fire). The Tr. Light Blue and White ice variant is used in four sets (six if you count the new Kopaka and the Protector of Ice). And the Tr. Yellow and Tr. Blue lightning variant is used in one set (two if you count the Protector of Jungle). Not to mention that Tr. Flu. Green and Transparent as featured in the Protector of Stone can work just as well for lightning as Tr. Yellow and Transparent could.

So I worded the previous post poorly. I know the fire and ice versions are from Hero Factory. I didn't, however, know about that third one on Surge. And if it is on the Protector of Jungle, then even better! That one fits much better. Blue and yellow are used almost exclusively for representing electricity, so I think those make much more sense than green.

That team lineup is actually pretty good. :) I would have posed them a little further apart and a little different, but still cool to see.

I never really joined the brown fan club, and would have preferred a darker shade of brown if we were going to get it. The dude's mask looks like it was a neon lime mask that got run through the mud.

Now that I think about it, that would seem to apply to the Protector of Ice - ice on trans blue. Wonder if that was intentional. .

Is the shade used in Pohatu and Protector of Stone the same color as Hewkii used in 2001/2003?  The new color is called Dark Orange, technically, right?  Was that Hewkii's, or was that Burnt Orange or something?  The two look similar, but the new one looks a touch less orange in the photos (at least to me).

They're the same color. So, if you decide you prefer the old Kakama on Pohatu (though the old masks don't quite match the new bonkles aesthetic) you can use Hewkii's instead.

Yep, both Hewkii from 2001/2003 and the Protector of Stone use the same color (Dark Orange).
