Should I Get Into Chima?

Boidoh

Recommended Posts

I liked BIONICLE. I didn't want my interest to fade, so I said that I will refrain from Ninjago because I will probably end up buying NINJAGO sets, something I don't want to do because that will have me buying more system sets, and I'd rather buy BIONICLE only... I ended up getting into NINJAGO because it was mentioned a lot on BZP and I grew curious, plus I was really sick for about 5 days, and I decided to watch it on Netflix. So I got into it. Now when I buy BIONICLE pieces on BrickLink, I buy some cards, and spinners, and the minifigures. I suppose that will be enough for Ninjago. Now while I was buying stuff on BrickLink, I saw some Ninjago cards for about 2 cents each, and same goes for Chima cards. I see Chima getting mentioned a lot here, and it is a LEGO theme so I suppose the knowledge of it could prove quite useful. I also see a lot of cheap Chima related stuff on BL that will only cost me a couple of cents. Should I get into Chima? Is it good? How does it compare to BIONICLE and NINJAGO?

In my opinion, Bionicle and Ninjago are superior to Chima. Chima has some cool sets and minifigures, but I can't say the same for the story. The first season of the show is utterly cheesy and forgettable, but I'll admit that the Outland and Fire vs. Ice stuff is pretty nice. Honestly, I'd stick to Ninjago and BIONICLE, but I would also say it wouldn't hurt to give Chima an honest try. However, the Ninjago characters are more fun and memorable than the ones in Chima, and BIONICLE's just plain awesome. You'd be better off investing your time and money into themes that are just overall better than Chima, but it's not 100% bad.

What I'm saying is, it's safe to give Chima a try, but there are just better options out there.

Chima is good, though when the TV show first started out it wasn't exactly that great. It got better over time, in my opinion, though, and the sets have been great from the start. At first I wasn't too crazy about the TV show, but I gave it a chance and the show slowly seemed to get better and better. That may just be me getting used to weird animal-human-hybrid-things though.

If you like epic fantasy, Chima may be good. If you prefer a bit more sci-fi with more action going on, Chima is not really the best. It's not an action series with lots of cool stuff happening - more like a philosophical character developing type that borders on outright fable.

From what I hear, Legends of Chima generally has stronger world-building but weaker characterization than Ninjago. Its world-building is similar in scope to some BIONICLE story years, with an enormous cast of characters and a number of distinct cultures.

If you do want to get a taste of Legends of Chima, I recommend the Legends of Chima storybooks by Greg Farshtey. They are collections of short stories with an almost fable-like quality, but I actually like them slightly better than what I've seen of the Legends of Chima TV series. They are also generally cheaper than the price of an actual Legends of Chima set. They really showcase Greg Farshtey's versatility as a writer, since they are very unlike his work for BIONICLE but still extremely engaging.

If you want to get started with the sets, though, I can definitely recommend the Legend Beasts, which have a great value for money, great designs, a great building experience, and several of the main characters in their classic costumes from the 2013 sets (albeit sometimes with differently-colored armor and weapons than those sets).

Though I haven't followed the series myself (though intend to next time I need something to binge-watch), based on the bits of story information I've read when monitoring activity on Brickipedia, the story is pretty detailed and has a lot of action over the course of each season. It's not entirely up to date (though most of the backgrounds on individual characters are up to date), but this page has a good background on the story that you could read.

I'll give the show a try I guess.

I'll write my thoughts as they come to me as I watch the first episode.

Ugh...Too much whining...

Too much screaming.

Corny voice actors...

That looks like Energized Protodermis...

Cool battle scene I guess.

GEV BAK MY CHEEE!!

Super Mario 64 reference?

More cheesy conversation

Parents?

OK, so if they catch them going around sacred stuff, they call their parents. If one stupid light goes in the air, it is a full scale war?

Hmm. The first episode was ok. I'd give it a 7/10. Ninjago's first episode was way better.

True, Ninjago's first episode was way better. But the show slowly gets better as time goes on. The Fire VS. Ice season was fantastic... almost Ninjago level, except for the fact they went over all the Winter 2014/15 sets in the final 2 episodes. But then again, Ninjago had all the Winter 2012/2013 sets shown in 4 episodes, and the season was shown in 2012, making both Ninjago's 2013 story and Chima's 2015 story end before the sets for that part of the story were even released. :P

I am at episode 6 right now, and so far I don't see any of this "ever so great worldbuilding". Am I blind?

A lot of the places introduced in the episodes you watch end up reappearing and becoming important and stuff. It's like all the loactions of Mata Nui that you start to get familiar with. And the history and background of Chima ends up getting expanded upon throughout the episodes and stuff. Although episodes 3-15 are pretty much just filler, they slowly introduce new concepts and locations to the Chima world, such as the Hundred Year Moon, the Gorge of Eternal Depth, the Golden Chi, the Persuader Plants, and other things like that. I think the world of Chima competes with the island of Mata Nui for having the most worldbuilding by the time you're watching Season 3.

The two pilots seemed to be much better than the other episodes so far. Isn't that always the case? :P

I've only seen the first three episodes, but I actually liked the third episode the best of those three. The first two episodes felt a bit stilted to me, while the third episode offered what I considered much better characterization and humor. I found the antics of Gorzan and the Ravens in that episode hilarious! It doesn't surprise me to hear that the series gets better with time, as most series don't really find their groove until a few episodes in.

Seems as if there will actually start being SOME plot development starting from episode 10 onwards.

I finished season 1. My favorite episodes were the two pilots, and the finale. The others are meh. Some good, some bad, some boring. Season 2 is shorter, and I suppose that means more quality over quantity.

The second season seems to finally have some plot point. The first season seemed like filler, filler, filler, filler. But I suppose that some minor stuff from the filler was foreshadowing to what happened in the gorge. And that exiled dude.

Personally, I'm against human/animal hybrids... and the story reminds me of Thundercats HOOooooo!!! Which was an old show that I never watched, or will ever want to watch. I say stick with the new Bionicle sets or go with: go ninja, go ninja, go... *TMNT reference*  ;)

Aren't the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ALSO anthropomorphized animals? Just like the ones in Thundercats and Legends of Chima?

YEah... but they don't bother me as much... mostly because they aren't mammals...  and I just don't like furries. (Darn you Sonic fan art!!!)  <_< I mean... they creep me out, the same reason people are creeped out by clowns. I mean if you want to dress up like a creepy furry cartoon cat/man hybrid... uh...be my guest... just don't do it in front of me, because that's just too disturbing to me personally. :bigeek:

Besides...  :ahhh: "I like turtles"... lol Just... not Michael Bay's turtles...  :( what a disappointment.

To be fair, there's like seven tribes in Chima that are not mammals. Out of around 20 that's still not that many, but ey. It's not all about the fur.

As a non-furry but generally pretty big fan of Chima (and Thundercats. Thundercats 2011 is the bee's knees) I do have to wonder what you even mean by that though. What about a lego line about animal people implies cosplaying as a furry? And honestly, as far as anthro goes, Chima is about as innocent as you get. I don't really think it's creepy at all.

This is a little off topic, but is Thundercats 2011 worth watching? It's been on my watch list forever now, but I never got around to it.

Also, I don't watch Chima, but from what I can see, the quality improves with each season. Do with that what you will.

It's a pretty good series, yeah. Definitely worth a watch.

Unlike Chima. Chima has gotten better over the seasons, but considering how low it started, that's not saying much. A fan of Chima I might be, but the show...

One thing though, is it really over now? And what was that big expansive world when it zoomed out?

Well, Ninjago ended too, but then it got renewed. So maybe Chima will be given a continuation as well. I guess the big expansive world is what the actual entire world of Chima looks like. Kinda funny that Mount Cavora is floating over the land of Chima as we formerly knew it, which was floating over a much larger world. Maybe that entire place is floating over Okoto or something. :P

Also, I think the whole filler episode thing with Season 1 was because they had a budget for the standard 26 episodes for 2 seasons. Since they wanted season 1 to last through all of 2013, I guess the decided to use up 20, rather than 13 episodes for that season. So they ended up having to stretch out the story for a long time. That resulted in the story moving very slowly, with important plot stuff being scattered through the episodes. The end of Season 1 and the start of Season 2, which now only had a budget for 6 episodes, ended up bringing the story up in speed. In a way, the last episodes of S1 are sort of an introduction into S2. Season 3 had fifteen episodes, because I guess the budget for 26 episodes ended up getting split into 8 for Ninjago, 15 for Chima, and the last 3 for I don't know. Of course, this is just a guess. I have no idea what goes on inside the Lego HQ...

So I received a Chi Gorzan set 70202 for Christmas and I built it and it looks pretty cool, but I'm not into Chima and I just want to ask if the storyline is good or not.

The first year's story isn't...really...a story? It's not really very worthwhile. It gets somewhat better in the rather short season 2, and much much better in season 3. The third season is actually pretty good all around, though the end is a bit underwhelming.

Since you have a Netflix account, I think it may be worth it to check it out. It is nowhere near as good as Bionicle or Ninjago, but since it isn't hard for you to watch the series, it wouldn't hurt to check it out. Plus, Speedorz are a lot of fun.

I have never seen an episode, nor do I want to, it just pushes me away for some reason. However, i have been wanting to get some of the constraction sets, as they appear to have some cool looking pieces.
