Set Review: Kopaka Power-Up Mode

Recommended Posts

Kopaka_Power_Up_Review_teaser.jpg

Back when we reviewed 70788 Kopaka Master of Ice and 70782 Protector of Ice we didn't have the instructions for the Power-Up model combining parts of the two sets. Now that we do, I thought I'd take a quick look at the model and see how it stacks up. Is it worth powering up Kopaka or is it better to leave the Protector armed and dangerous? Read on to find out!

Ooh, so you're doing Power-Up reviews? I'll make sure to follow. And everyone is always raving about how Kopaka's Power-Up mode is more of a downgrade than an upgrade, but I, honestly, don't see too big a problem- maybe that's just because I'd prefer to have them be taken apart completely and then rebuilt, like Mata Pohatu and Turaga Onewa could be rebuilt into a Dikapi. Nostaaaaaaaaaaaaaalgiaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Kopaka's "Power Up" mode is one of my least favorites, to be perfectly honest. Maybe if he had kept his skis it would have been slightly better, but it seems to me that if you're going to heavily modify one of his weapons ANYWAY, it would have made more sense to find a way to integrate the blaster with his staff and the saw blade with his shield. That way the shield keeps its large, flat form factor and the blaster keeps its linear, directional form factor.

I have no issue with the premise of these models, though. They're not "fusions" or "combos" in the classic sense, but then, nothing's really trying to present them as such. If anything, to me they feel less like a step down from the Kaita and more like a step up from the way the 2008 Toa could "power up" by carrying the corresponding Matoran on their backs. And we still got instructions for other, "proper" combi models in the LEGO Club Magazines from 2008, so the same might happen this year.

Even if we don't... well, I've already discovered that you can make a pretty solid combo/fusion even without instructions (and don't worry, I'll be making my own instructions for that one before long if you'd prefer to build it than design your own version).

Looking at the other power-up models, it appears they all use their weapons. Such weapons as normally attach to the feet are placed there, with the exception of Gali's shark fins, so I wonder why Kopaka's don't.  Besides being a nice tactic to get people to buy both sets instead of just one, I do like the easy transformation back and forth, instead of buying duplicate sets to keep the regular and combiner models, or constantly snapping pieces as you build and rebuild.

Oooooh, a review on a Power-Up Toa Okoto!

I am also puzzled/bothered by how will Kopaka be able to utilize that saw blade effectively as a melee weapon. The saw blade already resembles a shield pretty much, and now it is apparently being used as a "Ice Spear Shield" that shields Kopaka's Power-Up Ice Spear  :P

Fortunately there are upsides too and those have been covered in the review. The Protector of Ice remains merely unarmed and otherwise fully intact, and it is easy to convert between normal and Power-Up Mode. I certainly will add the Avalanche Skis to Power-Up Kopaka's feet, not sure why the set designers didn't do this for Kopaka when they did so for the other Toa.

Overall, Power-Up Kopaka is a bit odd in his weapons but otherwise ok. Not to mention one can always devolve him back any time they like  ;)

Ooh, so you're doing Power-Up reviews?

This will probably be the only one since most of the other reviewers were able to cover the Power-Up modes in the reviews of the sets.

In that case I hope the set reviews for Protector of Fire and Water will cover Power-Up Tahu and Gali, respectively.

It's actually quite nice how the Power-Up form leaves a full Master and Protector, I definitely like that. That being said, just switching/combining arms is kind of lame, and Kopaka's don't look all that fantastic. And yeah, weird how they leave out the skis. Definitely should have been included.

Well I am amazed that you are doing Power-Up Reviews. Anyway, Kopaka looks great with his power-up mode. The gold pieces and the Protector's weapons are pretty cool touches to him, too. Since there are some leftover pieces, I think the Protector would carry them to avoid losing them, like storing them, and to fight with powered-up Kopaka, side by side. :)

The Protector (that seems a weird/generic set name) could still be a boxer without his weapon, especially since he has those hand pieces. So he'd be more formidable than the Matoran sets of old.
