The Rarest Bionicle Sets? (Not Collectibles)

Shadow Destroyer

Recommended Posts

So, there are a lot of topics on here about the rare bionicle masks and collectibles, but what would you say are the rarest bionicle sets? (As in, hardest to find?)

I think the Piraka Kaita (Korea exclusives) are almost impossible to find, and then there's also the Sand Tarakava. It might be a prototype, but it was sold by Lego to some collectors, so I think it counts. Also, Toa Mata Nui and all the boxed titan combiners are difficult to find. Am I missing any?

Here's one: http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/8026_Kraatu

Instructions exist, so the plans for the set were finalized, but nobody is known to own it.

As for the Sand Tarakava, nobody knows how many were made. There are various rumours that claim there were six, five, one, and Klack apparently heard of three. The only one we know of for sure is owned by PurpleDave at Mask of Destiny.

Other rare sets include the rest of the 2001 prototype Rahi. A few BZPers have them.

I think the Sand Tarakava beats the Piraka Kaita in terms of rarity. PK was actually sold so lots of Koreans might have it, and there's what...3 total ST prototypes made?

I think there were 5 if I remember correctly. Are the rahkshi with the shadow kraata considered rare? And I didn't know there were other prototype rahi...

Shadow Kraata Rahkshi would be about as rare as the Disk of Time vahki, i think. I remember having found a shadow kraata in one of my kraata packs, and being dissappointed months later when they were being given away in later rahkshi sets :c

So then they are rare, but not really that much?

I assume these...

http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/66157_Piraka_Kaita

http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/66158_Piraka_Kaita

Never hear dof them either, I guess we could just build them from the sets we already have though right? So only the official sets can be classed as HTF.

Kraatu can't be called HTF so muc has extinct. The set doesn't exist so it's beyond rare, being impossible to own. On the other hand however literally anyone can make their own with instructions so it can also be classed as incredibly common. Depends on perspective I suppose!

The PowerPack might count -- I never saw it anywhere in 001, and I'd never even heard of it until I joined BZP. On the other hand, I don't know if you could rightly call it a "set," since it was basically just a CD with a McToran thrown in as a bonus :P

It can be considered at least uncommon because of the metallic painted chrome hau that was included with.

Is the Power Pack even that rare? I got it from Bricklink a couple of years ago with ease, at a fairly cheap price.

EDIT: So it is considered uncommon. Still, I got lucky with an uncommon product.

It looks like it sells for around $65 USD, but it is still pretty hard to find I think.

Weird, I got it for around $25 AU. Yeah, something like that. :???:

I think the rarest Bionicle set would be something like the Sand Tarakava, and that is a set I wouldn't mind getting if I actually could get it, but I'm not that desperate for it either.

I own some prototype sets from 2001. I have a prototype Muaka and Kane-ra, Nui Rama, all six Turaga, all 6 tohunga and 3 of the toa (Lewa, Pohatu, and Kopaka). They are pretty cool, and different from the official models by quite a bit.

So... this was never released... ever?

Mask collector: What are some of the major differences? I'm intrigued.

As for Sand Tarakava, I was gonna bring it up but guess I was Kapura'd multiple times. :P

One of the main differences is the code being on the outside of the mask instead of the inside. That and you can see most of the sculpting marks or machining marks on the mask as well. The reason I say sculpting or machining is because I don't know what method they used to sculpt the masks.

Mind if if I ask how you got those, MC? Did you get them through lego or someone else?

Wait, I thought those were fake. I saw a thread about that on BZ a while ago.

There was a massive war over whether they could be considered legitimate sets, and no consensus was ever reached. It was confirmed that the attributed set numbers were in LEGO's database as Piraka co-packs, so I really see no reason to doubt their validity, but a lot of people felt the packaging was suspicious for diverging from the norm so much.

believe victims. its actually not that hard, and youd look kind of bad if you were to, say, side with an abuser because theyre your friend

If those are fake, then they are extremely convincing ones...

Why would Lego only release them in one location though? And if they did why not US or the EU? Seems very odd. And even now after all the years of nutty collectors putting together checklists and such, this is the first time I've ever even seen the things. Can they really be genuine when there is so little information on them?

Considering the U.S got the Irnakk set, the piraka kaita may have been Lego's attempt at selling a similar item overseas.

I'd imagine some of the store exclusives to be rarer - Lesovikk, Irnakk, Nocturn, Karzahni... etc. I know for a fact my local Walmart wouldn't stock Nocturn for a good two months back in 2007. I feel the store exclusives tended to be stocked less, and definitely bought more too.

There's some exceptions though. For example, my Toysrus had several hundred Toa Iruni for at least 2-3 years after they were released.

Indeed... It's pretty easy to contact various departments at Lego if you're willing to spend long enough on hold but I can't imagine who among them would have such niche knowledge regarding things even diehard fans aren't familiar with...

A boxed Takutanuva is one of the few sets I'm still missing. Same goes for Voporak so perhaps the combiners in general are harder to find?

We already covered the Korean combiners bionicle+lotr :D
