How Should 2015 Sound?

Simple enough.  What style would you like to see in BIONICLE G2, music-wise?

I rather like the music used in the animations so far; it's a pretty good accompaniment for the whole mythic vibe they're trying to capture.  If TLG wants something a bit more poppy for advertising, my personal best case scenario would be for them to go Guardians of the Galaxy on us and use old Motown tracks for all the commercials.  Though I highly doubt that'd ever happen, sadly...

That's always been my preferred approach; TLG's got a fantastic track record (pun intended) when it comes to creating their BIONICLE music.

I do think the music they are using right now is great and fits with the new 2015 Bionicle.

But with having a band for there new Bionicle 2015 for next wave or 2016 I think a great music would be Justin Bieber :P JK

Flight of the Valkyries & Pohatu vs Nui Jaga, MNOG style remastered.  ;) (80% serious)

But in 100% seriousness, I like the new music so far, it fits the tone very well. I would like to see a bit zen-type/Japanese flute music, since they already did that in The Legend of Ekimu & Makuta trailer for the opening, I would love to see some fighting music composed with some flutes and various other Japanese instruments.

WolfHunt - that track just isn't dynamic enough, in terms of how it just sounds like run-of-the-mill production music.

What I like about Luchter's music from the Templar stuff is that each piece of music was very multi-layered; there as a lot going on at once. The Le-Koro Band and Le-Wahi jungle, for example. If we want an action track, this I think works better.

I want licensed music. Fall Out Boy, Imagine Dragons, All American Rejects, or ACDC could make some great songs for the line.

oh god please no

I'm with everyone else - the new music in the animations is fine.

and if they had to go the rock route for promotional purposes or whatever, I'll just repeat what I said in a similar topic a while back:

please no more god-awful licensed radio-rock stuff.

although I'm not the biggest fan of their music, I like what they did with Cryoshell - getting some people together to write new songs, making a band out of them, and then giving them enough of a boost to allow them to exist on their own and find their own musical identity.

I feel like, if anything, they should either go that route again or at the very least try to work with some more unknown and underground acts who might not get a lot of attention otherwise.

What we need is for TLG to establish an Okotoan language, then get Jeremy Soule to come in and arrange the prophecy of the Toa into something like this:

As I said in the main topic, Imagine Dragons could do something promising if they wrote an original song rather than just re-porpoising one of their existing songs. Personally, I've been listening to Warriors, their song they did for the 2014 League of Legends tournament, and I think it stands as how well they could make an original song that has the "spirit" of a franchise. Heck, the song itself even contains sound effects form the game itself.

Seriously guys, think of the remastered MNOG soundtrack! :D

I'd collapse with delight if they went back to that and rerecorded it to make it fresh for G2.

man, a lot of people seem to dislike the idea of rock music being in any way involved with robot-warriors that punch creepy parasites. :0

I'm not opposed to it, I just don't like what's been done with it thus far.  I certainly wouldn't mind hearing a Black Keys or Kongos or Muse song used; in fact I'd likely be pretty enthused about it.

I don't want BIONICLE to use any "plucked from the airwaves" song for promotional purposes, but that's not because I think those sorts of songs aren't any good. But I don't want BIONICLE to be in a position where it has to profit from some other band or song's popularity to get people's attention. I want the other way around. I want BIONICLE to be so independently successful that it empowers some band to profit from BIONICLE's popularity.

What's more, I don't want a song that just fits BIONICLE out of coincidence or serendipity. I want a song that is inspired by BIONICLE. Something that you can tell people "this is a BIONICLE song" or "this song was written for BIONICLE", not just "this song was used in a BIONICLE ad once".

Now, as for what a promotional song should sound like or what genre it should be, I don't really care. First and foremost I want it to be catchy and I want it to have lyrics I can sing along to. This isn't a soundtrack or film score we're talking about, this is a song for use in advertising.

As for the soundtrack itself, this post describes what I'd like to hear:

One of the things I love about Ninjago's soundtrack that few BIONICLE soundtracks have ever really been able to capture is that like the soundtracks of Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, My Little Pony Equestria Girls, or even The LEGO Movie, it literally sounds like the type of music the inhabitants of its world might actually make. Some of the Mata Nui Online Game music had that feel, but the BIONICLE movie soundtracks rarely did. The music reflected the story but it failed to reflect the world in which that story took place.

The new music is epic on some levels, but it still has this problem to a great extent. I can't for the life of me picture the villagers of Okoto playing that kind of music, unlike, say, the theme music of the Chronicler's Company from Mata Nui Online Game, or the theme that played when Gali fought the Tarakava, or the music in the Great Mine of Onu-Koro. The instrumentation for those tracks felt like it belonged specifically to the world and society that game depicted.

The Mata Nui Online Game music wasn't the PERFECT soundtrack in my eyes, but I still think it was a great achievement. It felt epic without feeling like generic orchestral action/adventure movie music. Surely the BIONICLE reboot could manage that as well.

I was about 2 seconds away from writing down a tirade on how fantastic it would be for the new Bionicle to incorporate old progressive rock--Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson... I'm hoping somebody knows what I'm talking about--into their promotional materials. But then, it occurred to me (with the aid of ongoing conversations) that a far simpler answer was the best.

Legitimate tribal music. No fancy footwork, no post-techno fluff. Just the basic, down-to-earth sounds of the world's indigenous peoples.

Something not elaborated on enough in most musical environments is how the world's more enduring native cultures--particularly those of Africa, Australia, and South America--have developed incredibly complex ways of communicating emotions, ideas, and even entire narratives through rhythm, melody, and even the design of a specific instrument itself (e.g. the West African "talking drum"). An ensemble of traditional instruments (entailing drums, harps, flutes, bells, lamellophones, etc.) would help solidify the world of Okoto in a way the current music really hasn't.

Given the way most things go down in Bionicle, though, you'd mostly just hear drums.

As awesome it would be to have a culturally based soundtrack, I'm not sure if it would help interest new fans and those who were already into Hero Factory. When I was a kid in 2001 I was more interested in the music from the Power Pack, which had more rock and synth. Personally, I think the best bet would be something like the first track from the Power Pack, which has the tribal chanting but also modern music the kids might be more familiar with.

  • 2 weeks later...

I honestly wouldn't mind a new Cryoshell song for the new Bionicle, at least for promotional purposes. Although based on the tone of the story so far, I'd prefer something with a more triumphant feel like Gravity Hurts, rather than the aggressive feel of Bye Bye Babylon or the moody, contemplative feel of Closer to the Truth. I'm sure other bands could do the same... but Cryoshell is still somewhat special to me since they only came about as a result of the classic Bionicle theme, and were good enough to outlast the theme's cancellation.

Obviously for the music to actual story media I'd prefer something instrumental... particularly something with the tribal/mechanical flavor of the Mata Nui Online Game but with a more iconic sound, like the Ninjago soundtrack.

^Why is that a good song for Bionicle? Bionicle needs something more grand and epic.

I mean, the narrator does have a deep voice, but still...

why isn't it a good song for bionicle?

All I know is, whenever I see Pohatu, all I can hear are the sounds of a sandstorm blowing and didgeridoos playing. If I had to suggest anything, it'd be that the music is more atmospheric, as opposed to fully-blown orchestral/rock pieces.
