On the Skull Spiders

Skull Spiders!

In this new first wave of Bionicle sets, our protagonists, the Toa/Masters have to battle the armies of the Lord of Skull Spiders. Seems pretty good. But should they be first wave enemies, or just a minor roadblock to the eventual Makuta battle? I disagree to the latter.

First of all, I want to make something clear. I don't want Makuta to be the main villain for this year. Sure, have some hinting towards his character soon being a threat, but the rogue Maskmaker should not be the top priority for the new line of sets for 2015. The Lord of Skull Spiders should be a formidable villain, enough to stand up against the six Toa, and can give them a hard time through more ways than his arachnid army. Maybe have him be a cold, calculating plotter, who leads the Toa into traps, and makes them fight among each other. If the Lord were as sinister and deceitful as that, he would certainly be a threat. But please do give him some character. He should also have a personality that makes us love to hate him. If not, he is just Makuta with extra legs.

Second, have the Skull Spiders do more than dogpile islanders. There seem to be different breeds of Skull Spiders, so why not give them something unique to them? I will offer up poison, strength, and agility. With these specific traits, each breed can be dangerous in their own different ways, and it will challenge our heroes to fight them some other way.

Third, the Skull Spiders can make collectibles. The Skull Spiders are apparently craving the Mask of Creation for it's power, and the Mask of Creation only, but with some tweaks, we can have an excuse for collectibles. The Skull Spiders could possibly just be hoarders in general, so they try to collect every mask that was made by Ekimu. Once all the Toa have found their Golden Masks, they could undergo another quest - retrieving the stolen masks. With this little plot point, this could lead into the second wave of sets, and the collectibles themselves. The collectibles could be the stolen masks, and they come in many different colours and shapes, and we could get some sweet new melded masks. This is a similar marketing strategy to finding the different Kanohi back in 2001, as both you and the Toa were looking for masks.

In conclusion, the Lord of Skull Spiders should be more formidable, and the masks stolen by the Skull Spiders can lead us into the collectibles. The sets for the collectibles shouldn't be too pricey, probably at $6 maximum, or something. It should have three masks, and a Skull Spider.

Da End.

Very cool idea, especially with the collectible incorporation. I love the masks that TLG has made, and would love to see them in all of the colours hehe

And about the different traits, that would work really great in an online game or something. Having to strategize against the different breeds of skull spider would be awesome

Everyone is asking for collectables, and I agree. One of the best things of Bionicle back in 2001-2002 was the collectables: kanohis, kranas, well even the Kanoka disks were cool... after that it got lame though

Came for the sets, stayed for the story.

I love your idea! :D  I want that idea for the second wave to happen! :P ^_^  Didn't LEGO say in their unveiling of BIONICLE that they would take viewers on a quest for the Masks of Power that they would never forget?  Hopefully that doesn't just mean the six gold masks and the Mask of Creation! ;)

The Skull Spider's do have different traits. Silver: Fastest out of the sub-species, Blue: Hardiest out of the sub-species, Green: X-ray vision.

That's amazing. X-Ray Vision is a kinda weird trait for a Skull Spider though...

I was never one for collectibles but your idea sounds interesting. They could also sell packs of the small studs the Protectors use for ammo and call them 'Power Pellets' or something.

Sell them for a buck so when kids lose them they can just find a pack that has the same color as their character and buy that from the store.

The skull spiders just seem like regular Rahi with one leader. I'm hoping we see someone truly evil, and Makuta could maybe be the chaotic good character in it all.

Excellent idea.  From what I've seen those pieces would be a pain to keep track of.

The main idea this article suggest might SOUND good in theory, but I doubt it would work. Frankly, the fact that the collectible masks played a big part in the classic theme's story didn't change the fact that they were never all that successful. The problems with mask packs (the fact that they don't offer a complete play experience, the fact that the main sets provide a wide enough variety for the vast majority of buyers, the fact that the main characters essentially have to stick to their "default" masks 90% of the time to remain recognizeable) haven't changed, so even with a story devoted solely to them it's just not a reliable sales strategy.

I don't think that's really necessary, either. Not only do all the Protectors already come with enough ammo to load the blasters twice, but you don't really need to sell pre-packaged refills when Pick-a-Brick offers the same exact service without the expense of individual shipping or packaging.

Before BrickFair VA this year, I plan to buy a whole Pick-a-Brick cup full of 1x1 round plates at the Lego store, so that I can fire them indiscriminately at people over the course of the convention. :P

What the ###### is Pick a Brick?

Even then, how many non LEGO parents who but the set for their uncle's kids' birthday know about it? You think they really know that some small ###### business sells the parts they need because their son lost them?

"Pick a Brick - The really pricey alternative to buying from Bricklink."

Well, really pricey if you're doing it online. I was referring to the in-person Pick-a-Brick at Lego Brand Stores.

Basically, Lego stores have a wall in the back covered in bins of Lego parts, as can be seen here. They have two sizes of cup (and usually cardboard boxes as well, around the holidays), which you can fill up and buy for a flat rate. Especially for small parts like 1x1 round plates (which can fill the containers well while leaving precious little empty space), buying a full container of those can be MUCH more economical than BrickLink or any comparable bulk seller.

This page does a great analysis of the economic advantages of buying via Pick-a-Brick, if you're interested in reading more on the subject.

Wow. I had no idea people tried that hard to be efficient :D The pick a brick you have pictured is much bigger than the ones in the UK Lego stores I've been to.

Why are they called skull spiders in the first place?

Because they're spiders that look like skulls. I've heard some people nitpick that they don't look like any established BIONICLE figure skulls, but really, they look skull-like enough that even a BIONICLE figure could figure out the resemblance. It's not like a spider with skull patterns in real life would have to be the spitting image of a human skull for us to see the resemblance — even a cartoon skull pattern with two big "eye holes" would be quite recognizable.

...because they're spiders shaped like skulls? It's a pretty self-evident name, honestly.

They're just going to be like the Jumpers from Invasion from Below. Little gimmicks added on to each main-line set.

Steam Name: Toa Hahli Mahri. Xbox Live Gamertag: Makuta. Minecraft Username: ThePoohster.

Wants: 2003 Jaller (from Jaller and Gukko), Exo-Toa, Turaga Nuju, Turaga Vakama, Shadow Kraata, Axonn, Brutaka, Vezon & Fenrakk, Nocturn, ORANGE FIKOU.

I got rid of my picture, are you happy?

They don't really look like skulls, they look more like masks. Like Mask Spiders.
