The MoUP is a failed Vahi

Recommended Posts

Exactly what it says on the tin. Both masks are forged from six elements (the Vahi being made from the six Great Disks, each of which represent one of the six [elemental] Metru, and the MoUP being made from the six elemental powers) and both are (logically) legendary masks.

HOWEVER...

It is said the MoUP "took control of Makuta" which is something the Vahi obviously doesn't do. Furthermore, the LEGO Club magazine shows that the Protectors used the Mask of Time to summon the Toa.

I believe that Makuta was trying to make an even better Mask of Time, but didn't know how, so he just guessed that all six elements put together equals time. Of course, the process must be more complicated than that, so Makuta's new mask goes all "eekombokum humba wumba mumbo jumbo" on us and starts screwing things up.

What an interesting theory. Many people forgot that G1'S Vahi was made my six different 'elements' as well.

Yes, but that one actually made sense. If you look at some of the disk combinations for certain Kanohi, you can see how the powers would have blended to make that combination.

A couple of examples:

Kakama= Teleport+Reconstitutes at Random

Teleportation is a form of transport. Reconstitutes at Random had the effect of changing the appearance and structure of its targets. Combine these. The teleportation is "reconstitued" into a different form of transport--aka, Speed.

Matatu= Teleport+Shrink

Again, teleportation. But this time, the power is shrunken down to something within visual range. It allows you to transport nearby objects to within a certain distance.

Kaukau= Regeneration+Shrink+Removes poison

Three powers, but still works. Breathing water in would normally causes damage to your respiratory system. Regeneration heals that, but Shrink confines it to within that particular system in the body. Since water could be seen as a "poison" to your lungs, as it contains substances and elements that the respiratory system doesn't require, then Removes Poison, well, removes the unnecessary stuff.

Having been said, let's look at the Vahi.

Vahi= Enlarge+Regenerate+Weaken+Freeze+Teleport+Reconstitutes at Random.

This one is much trickier.

Let's separate out a few of them, for now. I'm gonna focus on RaR and Teleport. We saw this combination produce Speed before, but this can easily be seen as speeding up time for the user, so we now have a foothold on the concept of Time.

Weaken might take out some of it's power, but then we have Enlarge and Regenerate that I think counteract this. I think those two together would empower the Time energies beyond their normal state. Weaken could be said to just keep it contained so that it doesn't go out of control.

Now, for Freeze. We know that the Vahi can only slow down or stop time around the user, so Freeze just blends with the rest to create Frozen Time. Weaken might also play a part here, since Time doesn't just stop completely.

And, there you have it. My theory on how the Vahi's power worked. However, I can't see how six different forces of Nature could possibly combine to control Time.

Gen 1 Vahi wasn't made from elemental powers. The six Metru associations only affected flight powers of the disk, not the Time power of the Vahi that resulted from the mixture. However, it was made from a mixture of six powers, so the theory still does work. (Assuming Gen 2 is intending to callback to this from Gen 1... is that likely? Eh... I dunno.)

I don't recall that. Which scene are you referring to?

The Great Disks are just very powerful Kanoka when they are apart but together they unlock some kind of energy (The Toa Metru destroyed the Morbuzakh with that energy), you can only make a Vahi with them.

But the Toa Disks have elementals powers, 6 Toa Disks => Kanohi of Ultimate Power? We will never know.

If I'm remembering correctly, it was either the Coliseum scene or a scene where Vahki are chasing the Toa, who are riding Kikanalo.

I'm probably not remember correctly.

That was just a normal disk of a lower power level. If he had fired one of the Great Disks, do you really think he would have been able to collect it from under the Toa Lhikan statue amidst all that chaos?

Vakama didn't use any disks during the Kikanalo chase scene.

Actually, you're probably confusing it with a detail from the Coliseum scene as told in the Legends of Metru Nui book - Vakama pulls out a Great Disk, finds that he's holding it, and swaps it for a lower-powered disk.

I'm embarrassed to say this, but I've never read any of the books. I've seen the movies, and I've read the first 15 issues of the comic, but that's really it. I know, I'm lame. Don't look upon me...

Perfectly fine. In most cases, though, you can check BS01. Pretty much everything you need to know is there. :P
