LEGO Starts Posting Elves Character Videos

Recommended Posts

LEGO has posted a

, one of the characters from the new LEGO Elves line, on their YouTube channel. It's pretty short, but suggests there will be a good amount of character development for the series. The end hints at more videos for the other characters, but they haven't been posted yet and link to the LEGO Elves website instead. It should be interesting to see how this line develops and if it takes off!

I am so incredibly pumped for this theme. The tone of what we've seen so far, is magical, adventurous, and epic. I can't wait to see more of these character videos! Or even an expanded version of the teaser site with actual character pages!

Azari definitely seems to have an interesting personality, enthusiastic and a bit brazen. It gives me a lot of hope that the rest of the characters will also be diverse and compelling. The animation style is awesome and is a real departure from other LEGO themes. The painted backdrops are beautiful and the characters very expressive. The voice work is also impeccable.

Also, I'm holding out hope that the app for this theme might be a point-and-click adventure game. Seeing as it's a girl-oriented theme with no readily apparent antagonist character (yet), the LEGO Group might not feel quite so pressured to create yet another action game as they are with themes like BIONICLE and Ninjago.

EOG? Elves Online Game? That would be interesting... :P

The animation seems kind of choppy and rough which is a shame because it's obviously not from lack of talent on the animators' part. I'm also unsure on the voice but that's mostly because it makes me worry she's just going to be a straight-up slapped-together tomboy archetype.

Otherwise, this looks interesting, and I especially love the mysterious, mystical bit of music at the end.

Also the format of these character videos further cements for me that this line has more in common with Bionicle than with Friends, despite what naysayers may naysay.

The animation looks great in the video. The designs of Azari and the other characters look good too. Azari's voice, on the other hand.....well, it isn't the best voice I've ever heard used for a character. It's not the worst I've ever heard. Just not the best either.

The theme still interests me though, and I look forward to seeing videos of the other characters in the future.

Everyone is one choice away from being the bad guy in another person's story.

Ummm... this is LEGO? No offense, but this entire video doesn't look like it has anything to do with LEGO- no visible LEGO parts at all, and for this it's even moreso than Bionicle stuff we've seen in the past. And, with all the elements and stuff, it just seems like some girl version of NinjaGo. That's just my opinion...

...and then there's the fox. FOXY FOXY FOXY I NEED IT TAKE MY MONEY

I think part of why the animation seems choppy is that it is made up of various video clips spliced together, most likely with voice clips from entirely different scenes in several cases.

It bothered me too, but I'm hopeful that it'll improve in the final product.

It's really no differen than the BIONICLE animations we're getting, and you could even argue that Mata Nui Online Game didn't have a style that adhered to set accuracy. Niether did three out of four BIONICLE movies. Personally I like that the animation doesn't adhere to the set style, anyway. I think the 2D style is much more beautiful than any of the CG animation we've gotten from the Ninjago and Chima shows. It's an experiment, sure, but I think it will pay off.

Also, elemental characters don't really originate with Ninjago. For LEGO it probably started with BIONICLE, but there's also Avatar: The Last Airbender, Shao-Lin Showdown, a load of anime shows, not to mention mythology in general. This one just happens to take that trope and use it for a show geared toward girls. Nothing wrong with that. And since there are no Ninjas or signs of Asian influence in general I can't say I see a Ninjago connection beyond that use of elements.

I don't think she's talking about the editing, rather the fact that the character movements seem to be made of too few frames. Their movements look very choppy. I guess it's a styilistic choice, but it's a strange one. Perhaps it will be less noticable in the final product.

Actually, I'd say elemental themes started out with Slizers for LEGO.

Weren't there Racer-esque themes before Slizers that had some sort of elements? Like a desert racer, a volcano racer, that sort of thing.

I wouldn't, just because ones like "Turbo" and "Jet" don't really represent discrete and fundamental elements the way that Bionicle's or Ninjago's elements did. Just because some characters have elemental powers or varied themes doesn't mean that the elements are a focus, or that they follow any discernable pattern or formula other than "fire and ice powers are cool".

Even so, Slizer/Throwbots was one of the first LEGO themes where ANY of the characters were differentiated by some elemental or environmental alignment. LEGO had done color-coded characters before in other themes (namely Extreme Team), but at that point the colors didn't represent anything in particular other than an easy way of telling the characters apart. In Slizer, the colors and designs were directly related to the characters' environments rather than to elemental powers specifically. So a little bit less Pokémon, and a little bit more Magic: The Gathering.

Okay, let's agree they were a precursor to the elemental themes then. ^^

Roboriders. They came after Slizers, I think.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing. But I definitely wouldn't have recognized it as LEGO had it not said that it was LEGO. And as for the similarity with NinjaGo, think about it. Four elemental characters each trying to find a special artefact. Those are just my thoughts.

Are they necessarily golden?

It goes with the "Bionicle for girls" joke.

but yeah, that's what I meant. It looks like frames are missing, and I'm lamenting that because if there were those missing frames, the animation would probably be incredible. I can understand their reasons for not doing that, especially if these are going to be webisodes like Bionicle has, but it's unfortunate.

At least in this, the girl actually sounds like a girl coughmalegalivoicecough

Looks interesting, but might not be my cup of tea. We'll see. I do take issue with the really, really low framerate though, which may be due to the high detail in the art (compared to the BIONICLE videos). It's very jarring.
