3D-Printable Kanohi (Olisi, Elemental Energy, more)

As someone who has tried 3D printing, I'm really impressed with how many of these you've managed to put out in such high quality. That Olisi is just... too amazing for words. It's perfect, and I can't wait to see it painted. The Mask of Sensory Aptitude is also fantastic and looks just like the image (though not exactly how I tried to make it a while ago ;) ). The Mask of Elemental Energy seems a little too angular for the reference image, but it's a really cool mask regardless.

The other models, while you got all the detail in, just seem... flat and boxy. They have an obvious diagonal plane on the front with all the details, then the sides are just extruded back. I think they would look better and fit better if you rounded them out a bit more.

This is a really cool project though. I can't wait to see what else you come up with, but I hope you don't take all the good masks before I get some in. :D

Wow! These are very nice, especially the first two unreleased canon masks. The Olisi is just beautiful! And the Mask of Elemental Energy looks really good.

The rest of the masks are very faithful to the comic depictions, and I really like the recreation of the Blocko knock-off masks as well - they are pretty good, though the "Great Kiril" really is pretty blocky.

Excellent work!

I really like the Mask of Elemental Energy and the Mask of Sensory Aptitude. They look great! The Mask of Biomechanics would probably look a lot better if you brushed the sides more backwards, so it envelops the face more. Same for the Masks of Elasticity and Regeneration - they are a bit too flat. Apart from that, I'm impressed with what you've done, and I like your choices for headcanon mask shapes. :)

The Olisi, Mask of Elemental Energy and Mask of Sensory Aptitude are flipping amazing! The others seems to be a little bit less flattering in design, but honestly I can imagine 3-d modeling to be very difficult, and I can really appreciate seeing these and the skill and development grown in the process. I absolutely love these!

The masks are pretty cool, but you really need to increase the polycount on these. I've noticed that the masks you uploaded to Shapeways have a rather low amount of polygons, wich leaves visible hard edges on the print. This is most noticeable on the Olisi. I don't know wich modeling software you're using, but if you're using Blender you can do this by applying a Subdivision Surface modifier to your model.

Thanks for the comments and support.

This...is...awesome.

EDIT: Can you make me a mask of Possibilities?

The Mask of Possibilities is way too intricate for me right now. Besides, it looks a lot more like a Transformer face than it does a Kanohi, to me...

Round things are hard. Like I said, I'm pretty much stumbling though without any real skill, and I do know the limitations of the models, thanks.

And you really need to be more thoughtful and diplomatic in what you say. Try, "Have you considered increasing the polygon count, it might make you end result look better." Even though the statement is false, because combined with the limited detail capabilities of a 3D printer and the polishing process, the end results are smooth enough. What you see in shapeways high-def previews is not what you get.

I'm really in love with these Kanohi, and I'm happy to see that these are up for sale. The ones I'm most interested in at this point are the Mask of Sensory Aptitude and the Mask of Elemental Energy, they both are really close to the actual canon and look downright amazing. I always wanted a Matoran/Toa with this kind of nerdy Kanohi, and the Mask of Sensory Aptitude is just perfect for it. I'm going to wait until the Mask of Elemental Energy is "fixed" to place my order, but I'm really looking forward to these !

If you ever run out of inspiration, a nice idea might be making "normal" versions of the Inika Kanohi ! ;)

I'm sorry I came across as offensive, that wasn't my intention at all. But since you're selling these, I think it would be appropriate to polish them as much as possible. I know the final print differs a bit from what you see in the Shapeways preview, but some of those hard edges will be visible on a 3D print of that size (even after being polished at Shapeways) and that is not a good thing, especially when you are selling it.

I love this so much. I'm so thrilled you actually started this! I have a few things to learn from you, seeing as I have been looking to 3D-model/print my own masks for quite a while. I have a limited experience with 3D design (not something I do an awful lot of in robotic engineering) and 3D-printing. I will be free for a week from 1-9 Feb and I look forward to buy some of these masks so I can get a feel for their aesthetic/quality. And hey, you are a lot better at this than you led me to believe! Great work overall!!!

Even if you think it does, I'm sure people would still be willing to buy it (Me, namely :P). You should give it a shot. I've got a Nikila MOC that just doesn't look right with any other mask, and I'd be happy to give you credit if you were to make me one. I'll pay for it, of course.

Wow man, you've been on a roll with these!  It's great to see you still making interesting stuff here!  I'd definitely buy one of these in a heartbeat (in fact, I just might!).  I'm really impressed by the Mask of Sensory Aptitude in particular, though that could be because I love the shape of it.  The Olisi is also really impressive.  A shame that quite a few of the masks don't fit on Toa heads just yet, but I bet I wouldn't be able to fix that, let alone actually make these!  Well done!

EDIT:  Love the improvement on the Blocko Mask- The stretching to cover the head was a well-needed improvement.  Good job!  Now I can't tell if I want that or the Mask of Sensory Aptitude!

Thanks for the further encouragement, seven masks sold so far. Very happy to be expanding people's collections.

I was tired of reading, so I spent most of today working on the VNOLG-Ignika, but progress is slowww... It would be so much easier if the guy who 3D-printed one before would, you know, make it for sale...

Maybe someday. At the moment, my skill level is limited to making an underlying shape and then adding/subtracting things. The Mask of Possibilities doesn't really have one underlying shape, what with all of the protrusions and indentations at odd angles... Maybe it will be my ultimate achievement someday.

I tried stretching the previous model on and off for several hours... gave it up as a lost cause and started from scratch. :)

Well, I'm certainly glad you did.  It definitely does look significantly better than the original.  Glad to see you're improving on these!  I bought a Mask of Sensory Aptitude for one of my MOCs.  :)  Maybe later I'll buy the revised Blocko Mask.

Yes, that Mask of Regeneration is much better. It's great to see you're improving! It could be nice to add in a few little details like the vents on the sides of the mouth and the flat edges on the side to make it a bit more interesting, but it looks fine as it is.

Darn, now I am conflicted: get the animated movie Green Lantern: First Flight, or get the Mask of Sensory Aptitude. Argh... These are awesome, though the orange one from the comics would look better it swayed back more ( i know, you  are working on it, I have read the topic :P), and though this would drift from canon, I feel the removal of the antennas of the Mask of Elasticity would make it look a lot better. Perhaps another version of the mask for those that don't want their mask-wearer to look like a stereotypical 'little green man from mars'?

May I ask how you got the names for your head canon kanohi? Pungoo sounds a bit weird... When naming things, I usually go for a two-part  combination of Maori, Mongolian, and/or Greek, but always remembering the sound structure of Maori. Like, Sensory Aptitude, I used tino (Maori for perfect), and medrekhüi (Mongolian for senses), and combined it would make Tikhui (teek-WHO-ee). Why doesn't one just translate straight from Maori, you ask? Well, what's the fun in that (not to mention kanohi should have short names)

Haha, I believe there was a slight misunderstanding here, I wasn't talking about the Ignika mask, but the Kanohi worn by the Inika :P Kanohi like the Kadin, Suletu, etc. I always hated how they never really fitted with the other metru/mata head based Kanohi. It would be awesome if there were regular versions of those ;) But of course, I don't want to pester you into doing something you don't want, it's only a suggestion if you feel like it :)

The updated Mask of Regeneration looks amazing, it's much better now ! I honestly think that if you'd model the Mask of Mechanics in a similar way ( so with it going further back and it going sideways as well), it would match the comics a bit more, as in the comics itself it isn't really a flat mask either. But again, this is all up to you ! I'm loving what I saw so far, so keep up the good work !

I have one last question, how close are the colours in Shapeways to the actual Bionicle colours ? Or is it something you haven't tested yet ?

Wow! These are some very accurate prints. The Olisi, Mask of Elemental Energy, and Mask of Sensory Aptitude are particularly eye-catching. I like that you even recreated those elusive Blocko masks, which I also wanted to get my hands on as a kid.

I'm interested in purchasing an Olisi, and would like to know a few things beforehand, such as whether the plus-rod connection is about as snug as an official LEGO-produced Kanohi. I plan on choosing black for the color, so that I can use it on a bigger variety of MOC's, and would like to know if the color matches the official sets. I know that some colors can look one way on the computer, and end up being more smoky or faded in real life, so I just want to be sure. :)

Also, I second Iben's opinion. If you ever have the time and motivation, some plastic Inika masks would be a great addition.

Thanks for sharing these with us.

I really, really quite like your Olisi, Mask of Elemental Energy, and Mask of Sensory Aptitude. They look great to me. :)

The only one I'm really not too much of a fan of is the Mask of Mechanics... I completely understand (conceptually, not in practice since I have zero experience with this heh) that taking something in 2D, especially the really abstract sources some of these were drawn on, and turning it into something 3D would be difficult. But that one is, well, literally flat. It's just rather awkward. If you could do to it what you did with your second rendition of your Mask of Regeneration, I think it could look fantastic. But as it is, it does stand out for exactly fitting in with what one typically thinks of a BIONICLE mask as looking like.

Overall it's all a great effort, and seeing it be done at all is awesome.

It's Pungao, actually. Yeah that font didn't translate well, going from Powerpoint to a jpg, but there are a lot of o's and a's in my names. And I did just like you said, I used a Maori translator on the words like "energy" and "premonition," etc, and tweaked them by ear.

The only colors I've ordered in have been white, green, and "metallic" as seen above so I can't really comment. But Shapeways should have sample images of their various colors if you look hard enough thru the site.

Haha, I believe there was a slight misunderstanding here, I wasn't talking about the Ignika mask, but the Kanohi worn by the Inika

Oh good gravy, that'd be tough. Maybe someday :P

See first post: "Note: The axle-connectors are adequate, but imperfect. I used the exact same dimensions for all of my masks, but some of them ended up fitting quite snugly, while others are pretty loose/wobbly. It probably has something to do with the polishing processes and the difference between different colored plastics. But with a little modeling putty or hot-glue they stay in place fine. "

Oh I apologize! Pungao sounds much better! And i am glad you are going off the original source, rather then whipping up random arse names. No wonder I liked the other names. :P Maori is a beautiful tongue, isn't it?

Not to pester you any further, but do you think a new design for the Pehkui would be okay? If you want, I could probably help you in designing it.

You know, I consider myself to be fairly smart, but you just made me feel like a complete idiot for overlooking the Pehkui in my Fanon Kanohi list there. Actually when I was deciding on the other shapes, this was the next one in line in my head, it's from the 2015 concept art.

Makes me want to build a Karzahni non-mutated MOC... Is that what you plan to do?

Pre-forums purge sig kept for historical purposes:

Some cool Bionicles are the combiners. Example: Toa Jovan

I've built a Krahka with 5 Toa Metru & Toa Norik, adding parts I needed to Norik. It needs 11 blue pieces (the ones that have +&O ends) but there's only 10 in all the Toa Metru sets. Do I have to attach her launcher to her arm? Please PM me if you can help me.

Wow MOCed masks. I wish I could do that. What exactly is a 3D printer? Does it Carve out an image like from Jurasic Park or more along the lines of what they showed in Small Solders?

Additive manufacturing, or 3D-printing, is the process of converting a 3D-design into a solid object by incrementally printing layers of molten polymer upon one another in the correct shapes/thicknesses. Think of it as building a snowman with an ice-cream dispenser (more or less). You have an extruder that spews out molten plastic in layers, adding up along the height of the object to produce a finalized object. It is a revolutionary, relatively new technology that can some day be used to print buildings!
