It's kinda hard to have nostalgia when it looks the same today as it did in 2004.

Except that the links and widgets are all broken now. :P

Now, I was here in 2004 so this is kind of an embarrassing question, but why are the text blocks red in that image? I can't remember them ever being that way aside from when we had the Hapori Dume April Fools joke. But the dates on those articles indicate March.

It's pretty annoying.

UPDATE THE HOMEPAGE ALREADY!

I guess I'm in the minority of people who like the homepage as is. I mean, yeah obviously the stuff that's out of date and broken needs to be cleaned up, but aside from that it's simple to read and navigate. :shrugs:

It's pretty noticeably different from what I just saw. :S

The colors and links are different, but other than that it's pretty much the same.

I like it too. It's simple and easy on the eyes. Too many websites today try to be clever and use all these gaudy effects... it's not always bad, but it's often distracting if not utilized well. I like that BZP tries to "keep it simple, stupid", but I imagine that'll change sooner than later.

Not really, there's a bunch of different content and subforums for starters. Like I get the original post I was talking about was referring/making reference to the frontpage similarities, but would say it's hyperbole to say you can't feel nostalgia because it's too similar.

The front page is beset not really by issues of functionality near as much as design. I mean, one could keep the layout the same and simply update all of the JPG artifact-laden graphics. Of course, bringing the actual code of the front page into the current decade would have to be done at some point as well, which would require a more thorough overhaul.

I still get a kick out of the old "gift shop" even if I wasn't around to see it in action.

I think it may have something to do with the way Wayback does their storage and stuff and it's pulling the formatting from April Fools?  :shrugs:

But man, look, it's the Hot Topic list!

I'm not sure this is the right kind of nostalgia :P

It was worse before the amusing messages and bubble wrap. I remember refreshing more just to read more of those things.

All this talk about the front page, but what about the forums?

-All the famous comic makers (Like Dark709 and Superkid)

-Seeing hundreds of users browsing the site at one time

-All the fads that involved mods/members changing their names to reference pop culture

BZPower really knew how to have fun back then. It's kind of a bummer to see how much it's slowed down since.

Oh man, it's funny how the main page looks the same every year after 2004. xD Seeing the old forums was kind of nostalgic.

But man! The 2002-2003 site - WOW! That really hit a note... reminds me of 03 when I used to browse this site for the latest news, hoping to find out if Kopaka would survive losing his elemental powers at the end of 2002. I remember my brother reading a rumor saying Kopaka would die and Takanuva would replace him on the team. I didn't join until mid-2004, but that whole year and a half of just spectating the conversations and looking at the Proto-Squad package images is a pretty good memory!

The only reason there is nostalgia for me is because I remember seeing the front page for 2004, which has a bit of a orange/red color scheme to it and that was when I saw my brother frequently visiting the site for the first time.

I think the reason for that was because the 2004 April Fool's prank was a recolour of the main page called Vahki Power, along with Hapori Tohu's replacement Hapori Dume. And he had like 1 mil posts, and was the "top-poster" for many, many years until they finally got rid of him.

That explains why a few years afterwards I saw it as blue, as it is now.

Vahki Power? Sounds cool.

Yeah it was! Here's an image of what the front page looked like:

I actually really liked that colour design. Wish we still had the option of changing skins!

Why was it called 'Vahkipower"?

Edit: Nevermind. found the answer above. I wish stuff like that happened these days.

Am I the only one who gets nostalgic about the news articles themselves? I mean, there's one about when the set rating feature was added to the Set Database. Remember when we had a Set Database?

The hot topics list! I'd forgotten about that! Now that's nostalgia!

They should put that up on the front page again.

Man, that VahkiPower screenshot says a lot. Both "Dume is Not Evil!" and "Proof Dume is Evil!" are hot topics... makes me pine for the old days when we had good solid debates going on around here.  ^_^

Well, okay. I'm not sure how an argument about whether a fictional site character is evil constitutes a "good solid debate", especially compared to other debates we've had on yonder place recently, but I suppose interpreting it that way is as good as any. :shrugs:

The fact that two topics that were opposites of each other both got into the top 10 list shows how active and interested people were in the Bionicle mythos...

... now all we do is debate about canonization. Rarely is there a thread about something else where lots of people join in to throw in their two cents. I know we don't have a lot of story material to work with anymore, but I still think it's a little bit saddening.

I agree. To Karzahni with silly layouts! (although I do terribly miss the old forum layout). I miss those golden days. :(

Wow, hard nostalgia wave here. I really miss the Hot Topics list, that was the best. Anyone got a pic of the Kim Power april fools page? That was one of my fav site changes to BZP

While I generally appreciate how far BZP's come, I can't help but hold some nostalgia for the crazy old days, especially the anarchic early days of the blogs (which generally might as well have just been called the SPAM ZONE). Anyone remember the second Fruit War?

I don't. Please explaaain.

It was a ridiculous open RP in the comments to a blog entry. Pick a fruit to support, and from there anything goes. The first Fruit War (which I was not a part of) was apparently done in COT before the rules on RPGs were clarified to make clear rules and structure a requirement. When the blogs became a thing, someone made a blog entry for a second Fruit War. My brother and I, newbies to the forum game, supported the Lemon Club (I guess you had to be there).

Eventually that war got shut down when the rules of the blogs were similarly clarified. Not before the entry got a truly ludicrous number of comments, though. I don't know if I'd do it again, given the chance, but at the time, it was fun as heck.

For a while there we did have a VahkiPower skin floating around.

And dude, look at the Hot Topics list. I remember that huge debate about whether Dume was evil.

Yep! I think we had three skins before the forum upgrade - classic, VahkiPower, and the then current layout. Really good times.

And yeah, I wish the Hot Topics list would return...
