Toy Fair 2015: Mixels, Minifigures, Architecture & Ideas

Recommended Posts

TF15_Mixels_teaser.jpg

Today our Toy Fair 2015 coverage continues with a bunch of collectible themes. The next most-requested theme was Mixels, and we're throwing in the collectible Minifigures, Architecture, and Ideas too. Don't get too excited for those last three though, as there's not much you haven't seen yet. But still, read on to check out what's coming!

The middle Mixel in the purple wave says 'wine press' to me. After all he's holding (what could be imagined as) grapes and has a bucket around his neck. The first one has those large round pieces which look like stuffed cheeks to me. Maybe as a whole they're supposed to be juice makers? Or big eaters?

Just a few corrections.

1.) This blue tribe are new additions to the Frosticons; just continuing this year's trend of adding more members to old headliner tribes.

2.) The 2x2 tile Gurggle is holding is called a Cubit. It's an ore used to combine Mixels in the shorts. This one in particular is a Rainbow Cubit, which can mix any two Mixels regardless of tribe, while other Cubits have a set two colors. This is the first time Cubits have made their way into the LEGO sets, which is awesome!

3.) That purple tribe has been concluded to be based on food. All of their names reference food, the mockup bags from Nuremberg Toy Fair have giant food in the artwork, each holds a food prop or two, and Vaka-Waka's bottom head's teeth look discolored due to eating (possibly cavities? He seems to be holding ball-like candies).

Thanks for covering my favorite theme next to BIONICLE!

The construction Mixels are LEGENDARY. Look at 'em. Between Kramm's drill arm and compactor mouth and Wuzzo's CHAINSAW NOSE, that tribe is the coolest yet.

I'm curious... are the tongue guys Flame Yellowish Orange? They look like they might be.

I'm interested in seeing what Halloween-themed Minifigs will be released when that wave is revealed. I bet we get vampires, werewolves, and a mummy. Zombies will probably be in the wave too, since they are very popular right now.

Everyone is one choice away from being the bad guy in another person's story.

The purple food mixels almost feel redundant with the Fang Gang; the distinction between eating a lot of anything and eating a lot of food feels almost arbitrary in this instance. I mean, the designs are unique, but the concept feels repetitive.

The tongue tribe, meanwhile, is just ugly. It's not just the tongue thing; Spugg's face is a mess, Tungster's ridiculous in a bad way, and I don't even know what's going on with Turg.

I believe they use both normal yellow and 'Keetorange,' whatever the proper name is for that.

I must say, these new Mixels look cool. We get to see new additions to the Frosticons and Glorp Corp from last year, like the Infernites have this year. The designs and new features on the new tribes look pretty great and crazy-looking, even though that they look messed up and has some reused colors, but I like the new different shades of the colors. The purple colors look quite lovely, too.:)

Man, that Louvre is crazy. I love how they did it.

This is a great year for Mixels. The junkyard guys are great, I adore the tongue guys (especially Spugg, he is the best), the construction ones are all very unique and Kramm in particular is just fantastic. The food guys have great color schemes and very unique designs. I especially love how Vaka-Waka has a hole on his upper mouth (so when you drop food in there, you can see it in his lower mouth, thanks to the clear brick). I'm not as big a fan of the new Frosticons or Glorp Corp, sadly, but they're not too bad.

The Fang Gang wasn't really based on eating, just on having teeth. They were mainly portrayed as using their teeth to carve up totems and stuff. They were more about wood than food really.

The Fang Gang's description on lego.com says "The Fang Gang is the group with the biggest appetite, and they can get seriously crazy on an empty stomach." and all three of their Shop@Home descriptions emphasize their ravenous nature. They had other uses for their teeth, but there was definitely a food aspect to them.

Unless the shorts take the food mixels in a different direction (i.e. being snobby about food rather than eating anything), it'll feel pretty redundant. The tongue mixels could also end up going a similar route that would feel unnecessary, but we'll have to wait and see with that. Given I can't figure out anything about their designs besides all having big tongues, figuring out their "collective personality trait" is rather hard.
