G&T Contest #1: It's Not about Your Post Count...

...it's about making your posts count. Well, I guess it's about post count too, since this happened. Let's prove even further, though, that this was a good decision by showing just how much thought can go into a G&T post.

Theme:

The theme is making your posts count. That is, submit a game that rewards thoughtful posts and a good effort in writing. Note that prolixity does not necessarily mean thoughtfulness, here. A lot of effort can go into shorter posts as well. Mafia may be a good example - but that doesn't mean everyone should submit Mafia clones! (That wouldn't be healthy for the contest or for the series.)

Structure (IMPORTANT):

All entries will stay open for two weeks after the date of being posted. This way, people aren't overwhelmed by the number of games to play after the entry period while still equalizing playtime.

To Enter:

Post your game topic, then post here with the following:

Member name:

Game title:

Game topic:

Dates:

The entry period will run from midnight, March 1st (Eastern time) until Monday, March 16th at 11:59 PM. Each game will be set to close automatically after two weeks from its posting.

Voting will then begin on Monday, March 30th at the latest.

Rules:

1. Follow BZPower Rules and Guidelines.

2. Follow the G&T Rules.

3. One entry/game per member.

4. Games must follow the theme and be LEGO-related! That does not mean that all posts in the game have to be LEGO-related, however.

5. Respect the game host - and play fair, please.

6. Please feel free to ask questions and to discuss. My PM box is always open, too.

7. Please no editing major game rules unless I ask you to.

Prizes:

Okay, first place will get a classic Bionicle comic donated by Black Six (Bionicle #9: Divided We Fall from 2002, mint in the original bag). And 50 free posts! (wow, much irony)

Second and third places will get a potoo and 50 posts each.

So yeah! Please share your thoughts on the entry period. And then come March 1st, get entering!

I don't think any of you can understand how tempting it is to just enter Bionifight Infinite: G&T Edition right now.

You know what, this is happening. Probably not with that exact title, though.

EDIT

Regarding the structure... I like the second idea, but could we leave the games open for two weeks instead of one?

Those tags. Oh man, those tags.

Wind, this is why you are the best *thumbs up*

I'm going to start thinking of something... I've got a few ideas now, but I am not sure... Just gotta make sure people can actually understand my game this time.

(and hopefully not go against a mafia clone)

xD

E: Second sounds best to me too, I think. I'll want to play them all and having them all play at once sounds kinda super frightening.

"Coming soon: Flash Mafia--"

[...]but that doesn't mean everyone should submit Mafia clones!

Darn you, Wind, you think of everything. =P

I probably won't be entering anything, as XXII is coming oh-so-soon. But if it wasn't, I would definitely make something terrible and lose. =P

Sounds cool! I don't think I'll be participating, since there are already so many awesome games that I feel like I would just accidentally rip one of them off, but I'm looking forward to seeing some entries!

Edit: nevermind, I think I might enter this contest, or at least try and think of an interesting entry tonight and tomorrow!

And I like Lucina's idea about them being open for two weeks; it all depends on the amount of entries received, though, so perhaps have a limit for the entries? For example, if less than ten entries are received, play is open for a week. However, more than ten means a week and half, and twenty plus is two weeks or something. These numbers are all random, just used to illustrate the concept :)

Hmm. The game I just drafted needs 7 weeks  3 weeks to play. I'd be okay with it being judged after the first round or two, but it needs to stay open in order to finish.

EDIT: Definitely tightening up them rounds. And no, this isn't Mafia. :P

How intense does the idea have to be? Like, obviously it has to have essence and playability, but does it have to be an epic game? Or can it be a simple one that is easy to jump into and pick up? It would definitely incorporate the 'making posts count' element, but from what I've read so far the idea I have is kind of... Well, easy? I don't know the right word :P

A simple game sounds nice to me. I'd play it.

As long as it fits the theme and the other rules of the tournaments, you should be good.

(of course I am not a mod or anything so don't take my word for it)

(but I don't see how it would be wrong)

An extension is likely feasible. Any other thoughts on or support for an extended second option?

Easy is fine! I hope the theme is "general" enough to make for a relatively free first contest here. Epic games have their place, but so does what you seem to have in mind. As far as the polls go, playability should be a factor. But since voting will be open to all of BZPower, some votes will inevitably come from members who haven't even played the game!

Also (hopefully) last question: if we can finish the write up before March 1st, can we post the topic and then enter when the entry submission thing becomes available? Or do we have to wait to post our topics? Thanks in advance for the help!

Please wait to post the topic until the entry period opens on March 1st.

If we go with the second option for the entry period (post whenever; topic stays open for the determined number of weeks), I'll probably set the topics to close automatically. Hopefully any edits to the first post won't mess that up. : P

The advantage of the second option would be that it could help folks with shifting schedules get a chance to try their hand at at least one of the games when otherwise they might not have had the time to give them a try, I'd say.  So I'm leaning towards that.

I think a two-week period is also probably better for similar reasons - it gives more flexibility, and it also lets the games breathe a bit more so folks can get a sense for what works.

Short version: let's go with option two!

We will go with option two! The first post has been updated:

Voting will then begin on Monday, March 30th at the latest."

Oh I have an idea of a game... First question... Does it have to be an RP style or can it be a Post after poster type deal?

(again, not a mod but I know G&T fairly well so I think I can give you tentative help.)

Considering our one entry so far is a poster game(that is, one without signups where you can kinda just post and leave if you wish), I do believe that that format of game would be fine. It is the style of ~half of the games in this forum, so as long as you hit the theme I think you'd be fine.

(and now I've got an idea for a hilarious game that I won't do out of principle D=)

Hrm, I'd love to participate in this contest but, with hosting Mafia XXII, and all my other school shinnanigans, I don't have the time :(...

I might just have to settle for playing the games that entered rather than submitting one myself.

It's nice that G&T contests might be start happening, though

Either is acceptable! Or something completely different as well.

I do want to be clear, too, that games don't have to be designed to last only two weeks. The topics will be reopened for play once voting begins, unless otherwise requested.

Will there be an entry topic with the entries in a list made up, or just this topic? Not that I'm asking for the moderators to do extra work, I just want to make sure I am clear on the info :P

So I'm going to be rewarded if I wait until the 16th, seeing that my game can stay open because voting begins as soon as the two weeks end?

Not that I care, since my game, like our resident electric gamemaster's, will benefit from limited time available as well.

I'm not sure if it would be rewarding it, but if it seems like it would be a problem, I can wait until after voting has finished. Just then anyone who missed the initial two weeks wouldn't get the chance to play, if only for a day or two, before voting.

Next contest everything will have been worked out, so I suppose pardon the mess while we all work these kinks out. : P

No problem at all. Just asking questions and getting answers.
