What you are about to partake in is real. The participants are not actors. They are the actual people who have already either filed suit or been served a summons to appear in a Metru Nui municipal court. Both parties in the suit have agreed to access their court cases and have their disputes settled here, in our forum:

The Matoran's Court

---

Two Matoran sit across from each other, in front of a massive wooden structure known as the bench in the middle of the large set. The Judge sits on top, looking down distastefully at the two Matoran below.

“I’ve heard your complaints. Does the defendant have any final words?”

The Ga-Matoran looks over to the team of Matoran across from him, and shakes her head silently.

“Prosecution?”

They start to shake their head, when they are suddenly interrupted by a loud thud as the doors to the courtroom are blown open. A frantic Po-Matoran rushes in, and begins screaming at the Ga-Matoran.

“This is your fault? How can you just leave me like this? I thought we had something special!”

The Ga-Matoran turns slowly to the Po-Matoran, and locks eyes with him.

“I’m sorry, Hewkii. Our love is non-canon now. You know this.”

Hewkii drops to his knees, and screams a long “NOOOOOOOOO” as he is forcefully escorted out. Again.

“Court dismissed!” The Judge yells as he bangs his gavel.

Everybody disperses, and then a massive logo covers the screen as the Judge walks down to the front of the stage. His blood-red eyes glance over the live studio audience, one of whom he high-fives, and then looks straight into the camera.

“Thanks for tuning into this today’s edition of THE MATORAN’S COURT. You’ve helped keep the streets of Metru-Nui safe once again. Tune in tomorrow morning as we tally your votes and announce the results of the Macku-Huki case. Did you decide that their love never happened, or did you give them leeway? We'll find out in the morning!”

“And remember. Only you can provide justice in this corrupt and crooked world. Now, a word from our sponsors!”

Goal:

In a world where the justice system is a giant reality TV show, your goal is to, by the end of the round, have convinced the general populace that your client is in the right and thus win the case.

Gameplay:

Basically, this game is just a bunch of back-and-forth debating on a subject, but with a couple of restrictions so that it is actually a game. At the start of each ~5 day round(of which we will have two), I will give a brief description of a crime that has taken place, as well as a description of the suspected culprit. These will be very bareboned, and not have very much detail in them.

From then on, the goal is to make the strongest case for your team. You do so by presenting your side of the case in the topic. However, there are some restrictions and rules.

1: Pretty much any and all details and evidence will be provided by you, the players. However, you may only present one piece of new evidence in a post. Any previous evidence provided by either side may be used referenced in any post, however.
2: All posts* are a part of the “Yes, but” rule. That being that you cannot simply negate somebody else’s post, instead, you must build up on top of it. Every post has to count.
3: You may not post for your team twice. As well, posting alternates between teams. This ensures that you can’t just teamwork a great argument for your team into place without any sort of rebuttal from the opposition.
4: Please include which side you are arguing for in your posts. It would really help the general populace keep track of what is going on.

Finally, about every 24 hours or so I will post a little something explaining how the trial is affecting the general populace. Are they leaning towards the prosecution or the defendant, ect.

That is about it as far as normal gameplay! With that, I think I’ll open sign-

OBJECTION!

Oh right, that. As well as the rules for basic gameplay above, every player has one OBJECTION! that they may use per round. This allows for the player to directly counter the previous post, twisting it however they like to benefit them. You may not OBJECTION! an OBJECTION!.

Using an OBJECTION! is simple. Just post starting with the all caps, bolded OBJECTION!, then you have used your OBJECTION!. See examples section for some, you guessed it, examples.

Judging

I figure a bit about what the general populace will be looking for will help you in crafting your posts. They are not too knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the legal system, and so I will be looking for the team that plays fair, captures the imagination of the general populace, and shows their knowledge. Basically, if you tell a believable soap opera-y story, use a bunch of legalistic nonsense, but don’t make your case completely foolproof, you’ll be in really good shape. I don’t have any actual grading matrices for this or anything, though.

Examples

Here I have a quick and dirty example as to how the game is actually played, because I suspect that will help out a bit. The actual cases will not be anything as ridiculous as this**, and will not feature BZP members.

Somebody stole the cookies from the cookie jar! A Mr. Quisoves Potoo is under suspicion. This case begins... now!

Player A - Defendant

Our client cannot be guilty. Under the Cookie Act of 1875, such accusations are made illegal. As such, innocence does not even have to be proven, as this case cannot happen!

Player B - Prosecution

Yes, the 1875 Cookie Act does make accusations about stolen cookies illegal. However, said act also has a specific mention of the legality of accusations of Cookie Homicide, or the murder of such baked goods. Thus, the prosecution states that Mr. Quisoves Potoo is guilty of killing the delectable baked goods.

Player C - Defendant
There is no indication that our client has committed such atrocious crimes! Under the 311/2th amendment, trying to accuse the defendant of a different crime without reasonable suspicion is unable to be considered!

Player D - Prosecution

We have evidence that Mr. Quisoves Potoo has been convicted guilty in eight different instances, and never been found innocent, responsible for the deaths of two dozen Matoran and at least twice that many baked goods. Thus, we have reasonable suspicion!

Player A - Defendant
OBJECTION!

You state that our client has been convicted wrongly eight times, however, that is the opposite of true. He has never been proven guilty in our legal system, and has received multiple accolades for his outstanding service to our great city. Hail our lord and savior, Dume!
As you may be able to see from our proof, that is not, by any means, a legal reasonable suspicion of our client. As such, the case still stands on uneven illegal ground in whole, and cannot be brought to court.

Etc.

Signups will run for ~24 hours. We need at least 4 players for the game to start, but any number may join after that. Indeed, more is certainly better. As well, we will have another sign-up period between the two rounds, since we do have the extra time and so if somebody missed it they can get in/if somebody wants out they can.

Finally, if you missed signups, you can still participate! You can just PM me during the last couple of days which side you think should win(after all, if you aren’t a part of the trial, you are a part of the general populace) and I will take that into consideration. It isn’t much, but *shreg*

So yeah. You should sign up now!(or if you are from the future, you should vote in the polls!)***

*If an OBJECTION! is used, this is no longer the case. Because that is the point of OBJECTION!s.

Round 1 - Day 1

Ten Matoran stood in the little dressing room off to the wing of the set. Ten Matoran stood, nervous about the prospects of their future. They were about to begin their first case. The people of Metru-Nui would all be watching, like clockwork. They would be scrutinizing every move, every motion. But together, they will find justice.

They glanced at each other, nervous, but ready to begin. They had prepared themselves for this moment their WHOLE LIVES.

A Le-Matoran with a headset on turned the corner, and began gesturing to the gathered Matoran.

“Places.” He whispered. “It is time to begin.”

The ten Matoran slowly made their way onto the solemn looking stage. This was the place of justice. This was the home of Metru-Nui’s safety. This was where they would put to rest some quarrel or another and where they would begin their careers. This was the temple of Metru-Nui’s security, and they would do their best to uphold it.

Within moments of settling in, the Matoran all heard that familiar jingle that started every session, and the familiar Pakari bearing, white wig wearing figure strode up onto the stage confidently and began speaking in .

“Welcome to a new case of The Matoran’s Court! I’m sure you’ve all heard the news by now, but the results are in from last case. Indeed, love is non-canon! Justice has been done, once again!”

Cheers resounded through the empty set, and the Judge nodded approvingly at the wall.

“And now, time to begin our next case. We have another highly trained, experienced team of attorneys at hand, to decide the fate of what might be our most sensational case ever! We will set the scene-”

With that, the doors at the end of the hall burst open once again. those industrial doorstoppers were doing wonders. Another Matoran burst in, frantically.

“Wait! I want to debate all the points too!”

The Judge looked confused for the briefest of moments, before turning back to the camera with a charismatic smile. “Sure thing, we were just getting started. You may join the Defendants.”

The Onu-Matoran who had burst in nodded in appreciation, then rushed to take his place on the Defendant’s side.

The Judge glanced around, and gave a brief nod, before beginning a new spiel. “As the teams are now uneven, we will be awarding the Prosecution with an extra OBJECTION! for this case. Any member on the Prosecution may use it.”

The Judge straightened his collar, flashed a quick grin, then launched into the case details.

“Mr. Leeeerod Lekinson. A well known face around our marvelous city, was found dead last night. His body was found mutilated and destroyed, with a great many different wounds. Far more than we can show here on live Television."

"We have apprehended a suspect. A Mr. Tavolia Venigard was found near the scene of the crime. Our team of experts shall provide the rest of the evidence necessary throughout this case.”

“Let the search for Justice commence!”

The lights go out, and then twin spotlights go up on both teams. It was time to go.

If I may approach the bench? I have here statements from a witness from across the street that not only heard The Defendant and the Deceased arguing prior to the murder in question but witnessed both parties from a window above the club where the original argument took place. Metru evidence 30592 for the prosecution your honor.

Ah, but you see, Mr. Lekinson and Mr. Venigard were indeed arguing, however, a party of matoran on the ground, no less than 10 bios from the scene, can confirm that they heard raised voices and arguement, but also that the two had struck a compromise and walked away. This has been evidence from the defense.

Shadowhawk - Prosecution:

"Your Honor! On behalf of the prosecution, I concede the above point, but would also like to note that--"

*shuffles papers*

*grimly locks eyes with Underscore*

"---as further described within the full and complete statements of the noted 'party' of witnesses, Mr. Lekinson and Mr. Venigard did appear to strike a compromise and walk away from the scene... however, the said party of witnesses also agrees, and unanimously, that Mr. Lekinson and Mr. Venigard walked away from the scene of the argument together. As such, the 'evidence' put forth by the defense is useless in proving the alleged 'innocence' of Mr. Venigard... Obviously, Mr. Venigard was still in close proximity to Mr. Lekinson at the time of the murder, and thus remains under heavy, nay, excruciatingly weighty suspicion. Is it not quite probable that he was only seeming to agree to a compromise with Mr. Lekinson, and thereafter biding his time until he could take violent action against the life of said?"

"Furthermore, I do hereby request that Mr. Underscore be removed from court, as per the Code of Legal Affairs, Section XVII, Clause II, which specifically prohibits the attorney, or attorneys, of the defense from selectively editing and/or censoring any and all statements, made under oath, of legit witnesses. Mr. Underscore, as I have just proven, blatantly neglected to inform the court of the exceedingly important detail just described, and thus slanted the apparent facts in the defendants' favor. Your Honor, it is my opinion that Mr. Underscore is a biased and untrustworthy scoundrel, concerned only with the defense of his client and not the due process of justice and legal action, and I petition that he be speedily removed from this court."

"That is all."

As Shadowhawk finishes railing against Underscore, the court hears the loud throat-clearing of Atticus Winch, Defense Attorney.

"Now, wait just a minute, there, Mr, ah... Shadowhawk, was it?" He lazily looks over his reading glasses at the prosecutor. "You think that Mr. Venigrad, after having a heated argument with Mr. Lekinson, reached a compromise with him, stepped away with him... and then killed him? Common sense dictates that this series of events you propose is highly unrealistic. Especially when you consider the condition of the victim's body, it's quite clear that this was a crime of the utmost passion-- it was most definitely not done in cold blood. If their argument ended peaceably, then Mr. Venigrad could not have committed the crime at that time."

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/281394074/Phoenix%20Wright%20~%20Objection.mp3

"As for Mr. Underscore," he continued, "He's just a rookie, is all. He didn't have any ill intent to withhold information from the court. He merely didn't think that part was of any relevance. After all..." He raises his head, his reading glasses gleaming. "It wasn't."

"With all that said, the defense would like to bring to the court's attention a set of fingerprints, belonging to an unknown third party, that were found on the victim's doorknob. They have been compared to the prints of everyone related to the crime, to no avail. The defense fingers this third person as the most likely culprit."

For a brief moment, the spotlights fade from the jury, from the attorneys and lawyers making the case. A single spotlight rises on the massive bench in the middle of the stage, and the Judge then looks around and begins to speak.

“Welcome, everybody, to our first day break! We have stuff to look back on already, so let’s see what you all thought of day one of this case!”

“@KanohiMaster670 said the following.”

Man, that Shadowhawk guy is vicious behind the bench. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen such action live! #TMC

“Conversely, @TotallyNOTaTuraga said this:”

I am so glad that Winch fellow put Shadowhawk in his place! Back in my day, we never would have gone straight for the gut like that. #TMC #NotOld

“The reputable Court Magazine of CMZ had this to say on the day in whole:”

It started out slow, but has quickly accelerated to one of our favorite cases yet. We are already flinging(albeit quite useless) OBJECTIONS! around, and the drama between Underscore, Shadowhawk, and Attacus Winch makes for some great entertainment...

“Overall, it seems the general populace is leaning very slightly towards the defendants. Maybe just because they were the last one to speak. We’ll see what happens in the next few days. After all, we haven’t even touched the actual action of the crime yet, or even who both the defendant and the victim were! Or, who could this mysterious third culprit even be? Tune in right after these short messages to find out!”

“And remember! Tag all your Matoran’s Court photos, videos, reactions, and Tweeters with #TMC for a chance to be featured right here, on the show!”

ooc: am I allowed to post again? If not then strike the below post from the record... hehe more court jargon...

"With all that said, the defense would like to bring to the court's attention a set of fingerprints, belonging to an unknown third party, that were found on the victim's doorknob. They have been compared to the prints of everyone related to the crime, to no avail. The defense fingers this third person as the most likely culprit."

An unknown Po-Matoran walked into the court room and handed a folder to Doseki and whispered something into his ear. Doseki thanked the Po-Matoran before addressing the court. Your Honor if it pleases the court I have been provided new evidence regarding the matter of the unknown fingerprints as well as a new witness to the case in regards to the context of the argument in question the Deseased: Mr. Lekinson; and the Defendant; Mr. Venigard were having. Doseki paused for dramatic effect and looked at the Judge for his approval.

"The Prosicution calls Mr. Venigard's Ex Girlfriend the Ga-Matoran Miss Saphire to the stand." The doors to the courtroom open and a brilliant Ga-Matoran walked sensually into the courtroom and up to the witness stand where she was sworn in. Doseki stepped out and up to the stand and looked the Ga-Matoran over. He then handed the Judge the documents he receives moments prior. "Your honor... A sworn and signed statement of the witness saying that she was seeing both the defendant and the deceased as well as identified records of the prints found at the scene matching hers. As she was seeing the deceased it would stand to reason he fingerprints would be both on the door and within the house itself.

As Dosewski was finishing up, a loud clicking of high heels could be heard as fishers64 took the stand. "I would like to draw attention to Exhibit C" the defense attorney intoned into the mike. "This is Miss Sapphire's bank record, which shows a contribution to Green & Johnson, an energy corporation well-known for being a corrupt cover for professional assassins. It appears that Miss Sapphire may have ordered a hit out on her ex, to the tune of 500, 000 widgets."

Shadowhawk - Prosecution:

The Shadowhawk raises a hand, as if to imply casual objection, and drawls, "The prosecution concedes the point, fishers64. However, on behalf of said prosecution, I would like to bring notice to..."

After a long moment of paper-shuffling, he pulls out what appears to be printed records of multiple text messages.

"The following communications occurred between Mr. Venigard and Miss Sapphire, within a period of forty-eight hours prior to the murder. These documents have been obtained directly from the Higher Office of Omniscient Justice, which, as you are all well aware, monitors and records any and all electronic communications within the city. As per the Code of Legal Affairs, the prosecution is entitled to use these records as legal evidence in court."

He waves the records in the air, and levels an accusing finger at the coldly attractive Ga-Matoran on the witness stand.

"These government records prove, explicitly and without a doubt, that Mr. Venigard was well aware of... and furthermore, entirely supportive of... Miss Sapphire's nefarious intentions regarding her ex-boyfriend, Mr. Lekinson! In fact, it is apparent that it was actually Mr. Venigard who originally payed the 500,000 widget hire fee, but that he used his girlfriend as a 'middlematoran'. He transferred the money from his bank account, to hers; she was then able to hire the assassin. She and her boyfriend were accomplices-- allies-- in a crime of sickening severity, and as such, I hereby propose that both Mr. Venigard and Miss Sapphire be immediately charged with and convicted of premeditated, violent murder."

"OBJECTION!"

The proclamation came from the last of the Defensive Attorneys to join, one Mr. Zakaro O'Nui. He stood up in his chair and spoke, waving his arms at various people as he mentioned them.

"With all due respect to Mr. The Shadowhawk, I must point out that Mr. Venigard had reported his personal cellular device stolen but 3 days ago! Furthermore, Mr. Venigard has shown fit to tell the defense that while Miss Sapphire was within his personal quarters 4 days ago, he has also made it known that it was to purchase what he feels to be a priceless piece of art, 'The Seaside Shells upon a Shore'! That transference of money was made accordingly to that, and he also feels that it was entirely possible that Miss Sapphire took his phone while he was distracted or in the washroom during their talks over the price of the artwork!"

He holds up the painting and a small note with Mr. Venigard's secretary's handwriting on it, stating that Mr. Venigard was not available via cell phone for the time being due to its disappearance.

"Mr. Venigard did not know what Miss Sapphire was going to do with the money from her sale, but reports that she was unwilling to go any lower than 500, 000 widgets at all! How interesting it is that the same amount was exactly transferred to Green & Johnson but a day later!"

He puts everything down and slams his fist down, speaking again.

"It is clear that Miss Sapphire should  be under high suspicion for her actions, and that Mr. Venigard has been set up to be a scapegoat!"

Ghiddy nodded his head in agreement, scribbling something down and shifting his papers to hide what he had written from onlookers behind. Leaning over to Zakaro, he whispers "good show, old bean."

"If it pleases this court," he began, not bothering to rise, "I'd like to hear some words from Miss Sapphire herself regarding the matter." He settled back into his seat, making sure to keep a sharp eye out for any lying motions that she may make unknowingly.

(Witnesses work just like the evidence. Basically, you can make the witness say anything for four one piece of new evidence, and then both sides control them, basically.

So, you could be all like “miss blue replied that joe died in her arms” then the opposition could respond with a different question. Like I said, evidence of all kinds is provided by the players. So, I guess the answer is "all of the above". =P

Also, the Prosecution has to speak before you can post, Ghidora. Although I think, if I make this a thing after the contest, I might lessen the posting structure. However, I can’t do that now unless Windy asks me to, so yeah haha. Now, for a scene that is like 24 hours late...)

Once again the lights go out, and then come back up on the center platform. The Judge sits, gravel in hand.

“Welcome back, jury! After some... Technical difficulties yesterday, we are back! And let’s see what you had to say about the last day of the Case!”

“@HELLOMETRUNUI seemed pretty pumped about this case, and had this to say about it.”

OHMYGOSH that was LITERALLY THE GREATEST objection. be still, my heart. i just CAN’T WAIT to hear from Miss Sapphire =O =O #TMC

“To follow up, @IceIsNice seemed a little more... critical of these developments.”

That was quite the tactical Objection. However, I fear that the case is running out of time to get to an conclusion, and the evidence seems to convict the defendant. As it is, my vote will be going to the Prosecution. #TMC

“Finally, @TotallyNOTaTuraga said this.”

Another Objection, another couple of days gone. You know, back in my day, we would have already used every one of our objections and absolutely slaughtered the opposition. Bah. #TMC

“Only 36 hours left! Make sure to tag all your things with #TMC and have a chance to be featured!”

Doseki stepped up to the stand, "Let's not pint fingers. How about we let the witness tell her side of the story shall we?" He then looked over to Miss Sapphire, "Go ahead Miss."

The Ga-Matoran cleared her throat before starting to speak, "It is true. I had been seeing both Mr. Lekinson; and Mr. Venigard. I had been seeing Mr. Lekinson in secret more recently as I was having financial difficulties with a shared account with my ex Mr. Venigard. It is true there was a transaction between myself and Mr. Lekinson. Legal documentation regarding a transfer of funds from his business account to our shared account. This was the problem. He was extorting the money and I didn't want to have any part of it. So I told him I was leaving him for someone else." Miss Sapphire started to shed a tear, "When he found out who it was he said that if he couldn't have me then nobody could. He then stormed out. I didn't see him until days later when he was arguing with Mr. Lekinson. It was about me. I don't know what happened to his cell phone. Maybe he hid it to hide the calls he made to order the hit on my beloved." The water works really started to pour now...

Doseki sighed as his hand came to the brow of his mask as he looked to the Judge and the rest of his team...

(Sorry this took so long everybody. Internet died last night and I couldn't post this.)

Final Round

“Here we go. We have many Vahki in the back at this very moment counting up your votes, so let’s begin to get ready. But first, some highlights of the case, from your expert post-case analysis.

Yo dawg, I really thought that the case started out strong, but I don’t know. Both sides seemed to really lose steam towards the end, ya know? I think my favorite part of it was when Shadowhawk, Underscore, and Atticus Winch were getting into it, or maybe Zakaro’s Objection.

“Now, let’s see what you had to say! @TheThreeIsWatching said this:”

Some of these facts aren't adding up, I'm not who I should believe. #TMC #illuminati

“However, we seemed to get more than a few posts more like this one by @LiterallyTheUniverse.”

YOU PUNY MATORAN DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING DO YOU. WHY ARE YOU EVEN DOING THIS TO MY BRAIN? #TMC #IGETBORED

“Alright, here it is. The moment has come, for us to find out who is the winner. Is Mr. Tavolia Venigard guilty, or does he get the free pass? We’ll get right to that, after the break!”

A familiar musical cue goes off, and the camera zooms backwards into the commercial.

The Aviary of Saints

We got the MOOOOM. Call now, and for a limited time get half for the price of one!

---

The camera swings back down the darkened room at the sound that familiar jingle, zooming in possible too close to the Judge’s chiseled chin.

“Welcome back! Now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for.”

Slowly, the Judge walks over to the Defendants table, and looks Mr. Venigard in the eyes.

“Mr. Venigard...”

He reaches into a pocket in his long robes, and pulls out a small envelop. He opens it, and slowly begins to pull out the results.

“You are... ”

“NOT GUILTY!”

All the lights on the stage flair up, and Mr. Venigard almost faints with happiness. Multicolored confetti falls from the ceiling, and a triumphant tune begins to blast out of the speakers.

The stage gets rushed by all of Mr. Venigard’s friends and family, as the Judge walks back towards the middle of the stage.

“Justice has been served once again! Tune in next week for a new case, and more twists and turns than you can imagine. Once again, keep Metru-Nui safe. Always.”

He points at the camera as it pans back away. Credits begin to roll, and then the television gets turned off.

---

Defendants win! With that, I will open up signups for more players/let those already signed up unsign for the next 24 hours or so, then we will start the second round. Thanks for playing so far! Maybe I can make this go a bit faster this next time around and not be so busy... We’ll see.

For a quick discussion topic during this time of break, does anybody have any thoughts about the game? Once the contest is over, the posting restrictions are certainly being taken down. Maybe a rework of the witness system, one where I actually play the witnesses?

I don’t know, what are you guys thinking? xD

"Justice is suppose to be blind, not dumb and deaf."

It seems we lost this one and a murderer has gone free to kill again. So I am confused here. Was this game being broadcast over a media site for onlookers to post on, or are the quotes you posted from PMs from members?

"A stranger will always be a stranger unless you give them a chance."
