Set Review: 41073 Naida's Epic Adventure Ship

Great review! This is pretty much my favorite of the Elves sets, although they're all pretty good. Aanchir has a review in the pipeline on another site.

 

It's great that technically, this and the Treetop Hideaway will net you all five main characters, and the other four sets for the first half of the year just get you duplicates of the four main elves. It allows for a wide range of options for getting the characters you're interested in.

Good review! This is probably my favorite of the Elves sets. The brick-built hull is really elegant from all angles, even the bottom! I was very impressed with this set on a building level and an aesthetic level.

I love that the ship has plenty of room for all five main characters and truly feels "livable" — even more so than many larger LEGO ships from themes like City, Pirates, and Ninjago. The main thing this ship lacks in terms of livability is sleeping quarters — in the Elves TV special, they are present, and the bios on the website tell us that Naida does in fact live on the ship, but the absence of sleeping quarters is understandable in a ship this size. I suppose that at least one elf would be able to sleep under the stars on the sun deck at the ship's stern.

One thing about this set that might be a drawback for some people is the lack of any cute, cuddly animal friends. All the other Elves sets feature at least one animal friend, but the only animal in this set is the giant clam. However, with two mini-dolls and one of the four magical keys, the set is still a great value.

The clam shells on the sides of the ship are meant to be seats with wading pools, and somebody on Eurobricks pointed out that when folded up against the ship they also function as leeboards. The sticker inside the cannon is a downward-facing porthole, which I believe the Elves use to look down at the seafloor and locate the giant clam where the key is hidden.

anyway, pretty great boat, the functioning steering was a shocker, and i do indeed like said clam (even if most people wouldn't count it as a cute animal friend...)

 

if i had the funds, and the desire for two Airas, i'd probably pick this up. o:

I wasn't exactly planning on it, but since the Lego store seems to never have Aira's Workshop when I'm looking I ended up getting this set today! It truly is pretty lovely.

 

The shaping is indeed excellent, the colors are really well organized, and all the little details are great. The accessories are a lot of fun and I love the little cabin. I think the only drawbacks really come from the sail. There's no friction in the gearbox, so the thing just rotates as freely as it wants...it's not a big annoyance in any way, but, still. It's one. Also the fact that only one half of the sail has a design is a bit of a bummer. Like. I can get not getting the design on both sides, but couldn't they at least make the back purple? That wouldn't have been unreasonable, I don't think. Still definitely happy with it though.

 

The minidolls are also pretty fantastic, though my Aira's ears seem a bit discolored. Or something. They do not match her skin tone very well at all. But I think that's probably just me.

I like the Lego pieces that come with this set. Especially in the colors that they come in. The ship itself also looks really cool.
