How does Kapura travel quickly?

Recommended Posts

I don't believe there's ever been a canon explanation. Given that he only displayed this ability in MNOG, which is oficially only semi-canon, I imagine it's mostly just been dismissed altogether.

I hear tell, however, that bones has like three separate headcanons for it :P One of them just showed up in his complete retelling of the entire storyline.

I wrote a story about it, too, but I don't think I ever explained it. I always saw it as resistance training, as athletes do with weights or bands-- it takes so much effort to move with the resistance, and when that resistance is finally taken away, you move incredibly easily. I always found that after I do a really heavy set of dead lifts or squats, I feel real light when walking to the water fountain, because my body is significantly lighter than what i just lifted. The training of strain on the body lets the body do amazing things when you let that strain free. Kapura somehow finds something that he can resist in the forest where he practices, or some sort of strain that he trains with, and when he is out in the field on a mission, that lack of strain on his body allows him to be quicker.

That actually makes a lot o sense. I really like the idea of Kapura out in the woods with weights on, though I do prefer him as an unexplained anomaly.

He usually just takes the bus.

Never officially explained; as far as I recall, Greg has said that he doesn't want to provide an answer because anything would seem too contrived?... or something along those lines. He wasn't part of the team that made MNOG so he doesn't know what their initial plan was for Kapura's ability.

Actually this just made me remember a theory I used to have. IIRC Vakama's visions were confirmed to be the result of a programming quirk that allowed his mind to move forward in time or something like that -- Kapura, on the other hand, experiences a programming quirk of the same nature, but with space instead of time.

A programing quirk? Do you have a source for this information?

Is part of Gregs head canon. He was trying to retcon that beings of the matoran universe were just programs.

That is one of the greatest mysteries of the G1 BIONICLE universe. :P

But there have been plenty of theories about it. This was the last topic I saw on the subject, and it has some interesting ideas discussed if you want to read through it.

He said he learned to move quickly by moving very slowly, so I'm personally content leaving it at that. There's no reason every mystery in the Bionicle story has to have a scientific explanation, and I always felt Kapura's mysterious ability was something that specifically shouldn't get one.

Where's the fun in that?

Are you enjoying this discussion? If so, that's your answer. Had we been given an explicit explanation for his abilities, this thread would not exist.

There are some things in this world that are not meant to be known by mankind.

And I believe Kapura's quick travel ability is one of them. :P

Headcanon is that he has a glitch that gives him some time-space warping abilities, that's about it. This is one of the few things I'm okay with being not explained by canon.

I think it's best left to our imaginations. :P Considering it wasn't that canon to begin with, and it doesn't make a huge impact on the story, I would prefer it remain a funny little quirk of the BIONICLE universe that we as fans can remember and speculate about to the end of eternity.

Having different interpretations of it certainly gives wiggle room for fanfics as well, if they choose to incorporate it. (Maybe poke some self-aware fun at it if they want) ;)

One fateful day as Kapura rummaged through Vakama's possessions, he discovered the Kanohi Vahi.

Some say it was the call of destiny; others that he had missed his lunch; but for whatever reason, Kapura decided to lick the mask (:P).

A single flake of Vahi rust fused to his tongue that day, and forevermore, Kapura was able to "travel fast".

My personal theory/headcanon/whatever was that he's actually an AvToran that has tapped into his latent ability (normally only available when connected to a Toa) through sheer training. Adds a nice twist while keeping in the overall vein of his explanation anyway.

Greg shot it down when I proposed it once, though >:

What if Kapura was unknowingly using the powers of the Vahi Vakama gave him? His training, could simply be mental discipline in using the mask.

Okay, this is probably just an insane theory, but you never know  :P

Yeah, I agree. The S&T crowd loves to do in the wizard through ridiculous pseudo-scientific explanations, and frankly this is the type of thing that absolutely doesn't need it. He has this mysterious ability. You don't try to explain it, just accept the mystery as being the point and move on. Does "there's a glitch that lets Kapura manipulate space and time" actually strike anyone as a fulfilling explanation?

Eh, I get why people want to know. As much as we all love the mysticism of the early days, later years introduced a pretty firm set of rules, and when you have something anomalous it's only natural to wonder where it fits in. Aside from Vakama, who was already established to be both "weird" and "special", Kapura is the only Matoran with such a unique trait.

It's one thing to leave things a mystery, but you're already doing a balancing act by saying "this one aspect of something that was only partially canon is something I want to keep". If we're going to include what would likely otherwise be considered non-canon, it makes sense to at the very least wonder why it is the way it is.

No, it certainly doesn't. I suppose I should have made it clearer that I no longer subscribe to the theory I posted earlier.

In any case, if anybody still wants to ponder the issue, there's a line I found while replaying MNOG1:

Neither fast nor slow can I cross a bridgeless canyon.

I think that pretty solidly rules out teleportation of any sort. There's no reason a broken bridge would present you any difficulty if you can teleport.

Okay, this is probably just an insane theory, but you never know  :P

I actually had a headcanon once that the reason Vakama was training Kapura in the art of "traveling great distances by moving very slowly" was so that he would be able to resist the effects of the Vahi, whether for if he became a Toa and learned to use it himself, or in case it fell into the wrong hands. No real canon justification there, of course, other than that I believe Kapura was training under Vakama's instruction and Vakama secretly happened to own the Vahi.

An earlier headcanon I had was that it's possible that with the right mental training, Kanohi powers (in this case, the power of the Mask of Discipline) could be used without a matching Kanohi, but not only has that basically been debunked by Greg (Kanohi powers are properties of the masks themselves, not of the characters using them), but it also raises more questions than it resolves.

Good ol' Kapura. No idea, but maybe just falls down holes and pops out somewhere else. Mata Nui had a lot of tunnels

excuse my poor memory, but do we actually see him do this "on screen"?

Yes, it's his blocking move in the minigame at the end of MNOG

Oh wow, that's cool :D

And therein looks a lot like teleportation, so I suppose that's where the theories of it being a form of teleportation come from.

Elemental Rahi in Gen2, anyone? A write-up for an initial video for a G2 plot

I really wish everyone would stop trying to play join the dots with Gen 1 and Gen 2 though,it seems there's a couple new threads everyday and often they're duplicates of already existing conversations! Or simply parallel them with a slightly new 'twist'! Gen 2 is NEW, it is NOT Gen 1 and it is NOT a continuation. Outside of the characters we already have I personally don't want to see ANY old characters return. I think it will cheapen the whole experience to those of us familiar with the original line...

I like this one. Maybe Kapura knew about all of the maintenance tunnels all along and there are hundrds of them under the island of Mata Nui. *gasp* Kapura knew about the GSR all along!

My other theory is just wormholes somehow.

Actually, now I remember having a theory about this a couple years ago whilst walking home from somewhere.

Kapura just walks slowly as he does, but he occupies himself with thoughts to an extreme level. So much that in his prospective, by the time he reached his destination, little to no time has passed.

But seeing as he was seen teleporting, this theory iz dieded.

Was a boring one at any rate.
