BIONICLE Mask Hunt Officially Begins!

Recommended Posts

LEGO has released a

disclosing the details of their new BIONICLE Mask Hunt contest! LEGO is asking fans to photograph "hidden masks" they spot in the world around them (clouds, trees, furniture, you name it) corresponding to the six BIONICLE elements, then share them on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtag #BionicleMaskHunt. The top entry for each element will win the corresponding 14-karat gold BIONICLE mask! This is an unprecedented method for a BIONICLE giveaway, and it will be interesting to see what "hidden masks" fans discover!

I love the idea of this contest, it's so original. The only thing that I don't like about it is the amount of luck required to win, but I guess that could be said for a lot of contests. Oh well, still a great contest nonetheless.

I can't wait to go outside and look for things that look like faces. It's not something people would normally do. :)

So how about multiple entries? Can I upload over 100 photos weekly?

If you read down thru the rules, they specifically say "There is no limitation of the amount of different images an individual person can enter." Which means that I will be entering multiples per week.

I do wonder how they restrict by elements? Is it purely color? What if I take a picture of a face in water but it appears white-ish or greenish? I wonder which way that would swing? Even so, I expect a lot of stone and earth entries, seems like one of the more common places / colors to find.

Oh, and yeah, I'm excited for this. :br:

This is actually pretty cool. The only thing that seems unspecifiied to me is: what do they consider a mask? In the video it seems to be anything that slightly resembles a face, so I guess I'll just go with that? Oh is says right in the video text: anything that gives an impression of a face or mask.

Anyway, this is really cool, and a great way to get people to go outside and take a closer look at things around them. It also requires no purchasing (unless one has no access to a camera) which is a plus. I know what I'll be doing this weekend!

The ease with which one can cheat and game the system for this contest concerns me. It's so obvious that one has to think it was realized during it conception, so maybe there's some sort of internal filtering that will be done to alebiate that (if somebody really is picking, they could probably easily prune all of the repetitive entries that people got from image searching). One can only hope.

The incredible accessibility of the contest, however, is a great boon and I'm very glad to see that.

This sounds like it will be a interesting contest. The one problem for me is that I never upload photos to my Facebook page. In fact, I don't upload photos anywhere period.

I guess that's going to have to change to give me a shot at winning this. :P

I highly doubt that any concerns people have raised within a day of learning of the contest wouldn't have been thought of by the marketing team who designed the contest in the first place.

That's half my point. It's so incredibly obvious that it had to have been brought up, yet the concept went through nonetheless. So surely something must be in place, yes. Such as the reverse image lookup feature Google has that you mentioned elsewhere.

Does that invalidate it as a concern? No, I would still say not. Things will get through the cracks and it's not going to stop anybody from trying to do it. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to voice a concern.

To be honest, this sounds... painful. I've seen excellent and hilarious examples of faces in ordinary objects... and then I've seen some that just make me wonder...

To imagine the results of thousands of kids under 16 running around with camera phones, fueled by a desire to win the golden mask, makes me shudder. I feel like we're going to have a million pictures of outlets.

Also, doesn't one have to be at least 13 to have a Facebook/Twitter/Instagram account? not that this is gonna deter anyone :P

Brb, Googling a couple of things.

If by this you mean "I'm going to look up cool pictures and use them to enter", finding the source of such an image would be ridiculously easy to do, perhaps so much so they could have it automated by having a program that sifts through the internet looking for copies of that photo, and if the earliest copy predates your entry, you cheated.

That would be a little simplistic and error prone, but hey, I'm not a programmer. I'm just making an example of how easy it would be to spot people who do that, especially if they pick something from the first page of results on Google.

Most kids have parents who can enter on their behalf. That's generally the idea behind most of the contests and giveaways LEGO does on their social media accounts.

Anyway, I think this is going to be a neat contest, even with the flaws that it may have. I feel like they're going to judge based on interestingness (if that's a word). Like a rock shaped like a Hau would have a better shot than a vague face in the sidewalk.

Well does it specifically state the pictures have to be original or are you just suppose to find faces out there in the world? I mean it is not called the World Wide web for nothing right?

Anyway since I do not have any of the accounts prescribed in the rules I don't think I am going to enter. However if somebody wants to do so for me I could be happy to do a hike and try to find possible mask/faces in my wilderness for submission.

A nice change up in their competitions. ...Their narrator has some rather nonstandard intonation patterns...

If you mean the way he emphasizes the break between the words "mask" and "hunt", that's to avoid the words running together and sounding like he was saying something dirty.

Yeah that was the most egregious, but it sounds bizarre throughout the majority of the video (to me anyway),

Where the stress is placed on each word seems non-standard, each sentence doesn't seem to (consistently) match any particular poetic line or stanza; sometimes he does sound somewhat ""epic"" or dare I say Morgan Freemanesque? Ultimately a certain 'deep' sound but disgressions aside: he speaks in a rather marked form in some ways I think this works well, but on the other hand some might (or might not) feel it jarring.

(Personally I think that having such an unusually large gap between "Mask" & "Hunt" was actually worse; it indicates they where aware the name wasn't optimal [How about Bionicle Mask Search? etc.] & yet he sounds like he's trying to rush the last word in after a very long gap, admittedly his/a normal gap probably wouldn't be enough as even if people did recognise the /h/ they'd be likely to say he said something else anyway ... which some are still likely to do! I suppose the main point is to not upset parents~guardians or moral guardians.)

People using awkward constructs or emphasis or timing isn't unusual when it comes to such things, but he sees to be pretty consistently using all these things in odd ways.

See also: the announcer's clear enunciation of the consonants in "Duck Hunt" in the newest Super Smash Bros. In an era when audio editing is child's play and anyone can post anything on the internet, companies like Lego and Nintendo have to cover their bases to ensure that the "voice" of their brand can't be used for things that go against their principles..

Some of the entries are pretty creative so far, this is going to be a tough contest....

Hopefully I can find at least one a day to enter, that way at least one might be deemed creative enough :P
