What happened to the copies of BIONICLE: Legend of mata nui?

I thought all the copies were nuked, I've seen even gameplay footage in YouTube along with cutscenes, where all that stuff comes from? And why was the game cancelled anyway?

Well, according to BS01,

 

Because the game was never released, the only way one could play it is to find a development CD. Most of these CDs are currently property of the LEGO Company, although there are some disks that are owned by various people around the world.

As for why it was released, I don't know.

I think I once owned a MNOG disk I got in something way back in the early 2000s. Where that disk is now or in what condition I do not know...

Someone who owns or owned the game uploaded footage of the first level in late 2010.

 

And why was the game cancelled anyway?

 

The developers took too long and it wouldn't have been released at the same time as the 2001 sets as Lego had desired.

Correction, it was due to too many errors/bugs in the program and because they didn't have the money to fix it and finish it.

It's time to move on.

Correction, it was due to too many errors/bugs in the program and because they didn't have the money to fix it and finish it.

 

The glitches were one of the reasons it was taking longer than expected. I haven't seen anything stating it was anything to do with not having enough money.

I see they do mention budget issues, though I can't think what it might've been that they couldn't pay for. I think the behind schedule issue may have been a bigger factor.

MNOG was intended for a CD release at some point in 2002, and this is when Templar tweaked the game, adding a main menu system and episode select to replace the old save system, making it playable offline (and they also removed mention of Papu and Rangi). As far as I know, LEGO never got around to releasing the CD, instead putting it up for download on the Bionicle website a couple years later (in the Kanoka Club, i think?), then once more around 2006 after Templar removed all use of the word "tohunga".

Keyword "intended." It's just as well, though. If they took it offline and only made it available via disk, it'd have to cost money. Why pay for something when it could just as easily have been free?

IIRC the game was still available on the site in its original format until about 2003. The changes you mention weren't apparent until the re-release in 2006, though they might've been made for an earlier CD release.

I contacted Red Quark and he hinted that there may be new videos in the future, for what it's worth. Also, there is an unknown CD in Christian Faber's unboxing video. Also, the wiki posts about LOMN are largely speculation and rumors, as many of the alleged facts were disproved by multiple developers.

Has DB found a way round the platforms? Seeing as we already have videos of everything up til there.

I remember hearing someone say that was an easily fixed issue and that it was fixed long before the game was cancelled, have no idea where I heard it though and don't have a source though

Hmm, did not know the CDs were made so close to the cancelling of the game. That being said I also recall reading it was cancelled at some point in 2002, and that reports of how complete was varies...

In any case, with the issue of the platform, it's my understanding that a few different attempted solutions have already been tried with the Onua level data, which the first couple solutions I'd think would be raise the platform higher if it's a fall-too-long-and-die thing, or maybe there's a kill barrier that needs to be lowered or something...

WORST CASE SCENARIO if we had a save file we could try to edit it and try to access other levels that way...

Also, I have no idea what sort of progress the gamecube version made (though we do have screen shots of other Toa, I don't know if this is spoofed or in a testing environment or what)

Possibly. Nobody seems to know for sure what exactly the problem is (or at least from what I've been able to dig up), but at the end of the gameplay videos Onua cannot progress farther down a certain tunnel without dying for some reason, and this tunnel must be navigated to progress in the level. In my post above I simply listed a couple of ideas for it, but I have less of an idea of what's going on with it than, say, JMMB or any of the people who tried to help fix it.

Y'know, here's hoping that we get quality games these coming years. Other than the MNOG series and a few other games, most of them were sub-par. Not really amazing, and I'm being generous here. Check out the Biomedia Project and play some of the games. They're... eh... At least Mask of Creation seems to have quite a bit of effort put in.

I don't know quite what you mean by 'game-breaking', but the lethal platforms have been stopping us from seeing the rest of the CD's content (and perhaps the rest of the whole game) for over ten years.

 

Just about 14 years, really. And by "game-breaking", they mean the bug renders the game unplayable.

Just about 14 years, really. And by "game-breaking", they mean the bug renders the game unplayable.

 

We (Bionicle fans) learnt of it when the Deep Brick CD first came to light in a report in May 2004, just over ten years ago.

We (Bionicle fans) learnt of it when the Deep Brick CD first came to light in a report in May 2004, just over ten years ago.

 

I think you two are talking about two slightly different things: Sir Kohran about the specifics (the CD's content, why Onua can't progress), which was first brought to light by DeepBrick in 2004, and Cwog about the game itself, which has been common knowledge since it was teased in magazines, comics, and instruction manuals in 2001.

 

Anyway, maybe if the game were hacked in a way so that Onua couldn't die, he could progress further...

I've never actually watched the playthrough, perhaps it's about time I did.

Wait you were in contact with the guy who currently owns a copy of this CD? And noone has thought to ask him to burn an ISO? I don't know about the rest of you lot but I'd pay for him to send me a copy burnt onto a CD without a moment's hesitation. Once he's made one copy we can make as many more as we like. I know a a few coders and small time devvy types who could take a look at the code and I bet other people do too. If this hasn't already been brought up then I'd suggest it needs doing, like now :P
