Bogus Kanohi Colors

Recommended Posts

Browsing Bricklink's catalog looking at different masks, I noticed some masks have colors listed that shouldn't exist. I'm going to list them here to see if anyone can prove they do. I've been off the BIONICLE scene for years, so I don't know if anything new has been discovered.

Orange Hau

Medium Blue Kakama

Copper Pakari (an obvious edit of this)

Red Huna

Blue Rau

I think these are all fakes, either photographed/scanned in poor lighting or digitally manipulated with a color filter.

My friend went to Po-Wahi and all I got was this lousy rock.

The orange Hau was discussed at length previously and believed to be an over-exposed normal red Hau. That 'copper' mask would seem to be just a normal gold one but the fact you found that identical image does suggest it could be an edit. But why edit it to look exactly like the gold one that already exists? It's not my eyes is it? Does it look copper in that pic to everyone else?! No clue about the others! Hopefully they're all fakes, can't handle any more ultra-rare collectible discoveries for a while!!!

Never discount the potential that some of these could be prototypes. Sites like BZPower have been lucky to get ahold of prototype parts in colors never produced for sets, which they have given away to members at many past conventions. I myself own such oddities as a Dark Gray Metallic (Bricklink's Pearl Dark Gray) Mask of Shadows, along with a prototype Bohrok faceplate (completely transparent, with a "magnifying bubble" above where the Krana would normally go). I have no way of knowing for sure whether any of these might be a similar case, but it's certainly not impossible.

Well I think that Blue Rau is real but I don't remember it being that vibrant... The Orange Hau was discussed and was believed (while not confirmed) to be an over exposed red Hau. I don't really know if the others are rereleased in that color or if the seller/own did something to modify the color, such as over and constant exposure to sunlight to make a Gali Kakama into a much lighter version. Come to think of it, would it be possible to make that Orange Hau the same way perhaps.

I don't think the "copper" Pakari image is an edit of the silver one, but rather an image of the gold Pakari taken in the same way; there are differences in the images that become apparent when you switch between them repeatedly.  Seems like the photographer was going for consistency in the mask pictures, which is a good thing to do (so we don't end up with the "orange" Hau image, which is just an overexposed red Hau).  If it's called a "copper" Pakari then that's just someone not knowing its name.

Can't say much for the others.  Could be photoshops, could be prototypes, could be bootlegs.

I could be wrong, but weren't a small number of all the noble Kanohi done in the wrong colours by mistake, giving the standard Mata colours for the Turaga masks?

You're talking about the European Misprints from 2001. Misprints of the Matatu and Ruru in the colors of the great Kanohi were obtainable in european mask packs. The remaining noble masks were only produced in their standard colors though.

It also really annoys me how some sellers list masks under "not applicable" and don't say what colour they are.

Do they think people will buy them or something?

Erm, isn't Nokama's mask blue? And isn't that the Mask of Translation/Rau that Turaga Nokama wore?

Seems common enough to me.

Have you seen the Nokama set before?

Lol easy TC :D He's right though fishers, Nokama had a medium blue mask, not blue like Gali (and that Rau) All the Turaga reversed the primary colours of their Toa counterparts so while Gali was BLUE and medium blue, Nokama was MEDIUM BLUE and blue.
