Toa Okoto Pohatu & PoS Vs Lord of Skull Spiders

Recommended Posts

Hey there I made another Video this time with Toa Okoto Pohatu and his Protector of Stone counterpart. If you have seen my post about getting him my 4 year old son Phoenix built him completely himself. So I have this area by my house with what I am guessing is a gopher hole. So I thought I would film them out there. The Video is my shortest to date I believe due to wanting to make it two parts. I want to test the combining function on Youtube.com to see if I can get it to work. This is Part 1 of an unknown number.

On a side note Pohatu shown here has been slightly modified to make use of extra pieces in the kit. Feel free to critique it if you'd like. See if you can notice the changes.

As always you can post comments and alike here or over on Youtube. Not getting too many comments there on my videos.

Part Two is Live and ready to be viewed.

How is that? do you think his animation was a bit choppy or something?

Really? Well if he noticed the LoSS coming after them maybe he does need to change his armor. Also did not make these with separate pictures but a stop motion camera function off my 3DS. Unless you mean the thumbnail image I picked. It was the only one offered by YouTube that had both Pohatu and the Protector in it.

Hey! Not a bad start.

TAK

Thank you very much. Check out my other Toa videos on my Channel. The weather has been a bit bad the last week and the one day I had to film part 2 my filming location turned into a giant Ant raid. They swarmed my stand and the mask on it, my 3DS and even the Lord of Skull Spiders itself. So had to scrap that day as well. Maybe sometime this week I'll get part two up.

Alright so Filmed Part 02 today. It is only 25 seconds but the heat was starting to get to me and I had to abandon my concept early. On the plus side With parts one and two done I was able to combine them into a larger Video spanning a whole minute. Yeah real ground breaking stuff :P. I will reveal the full single video at the end. Anyway here is Part two for your viewing pleasure.

Comments are welcome and encouraged even if they are negative. Also any ideas one may want to see for Part 3 is also welcome. I can always add them to my already planed concept. Or if you prefer one can always guess at what Part 3 entails. I wont give too much away just yet...

Editing the First Post with the video as well.

Not bad! It looks good for the most part, the animation isn't too choppy (which is awesome), but there are two things that I'd like to recommend:

Add sound. When it's finished, you should add some sound effects. Watching robots fight giant spiders is cool, but it loses something when there's nothing to listen to.

Take your pictures with consistent lighting. If you're going to be stop-motioning outside, make sure you do so when there's not a lot of clouds out that could block the sunlight. It's weird seeing it go from light to dark so much so quickly.

I look forward to seeing the final product! You've got a really cool thing going for you.

Thanks for the post Phantom Terror. Yeah I have an issue with lighting due to the limited locations I can film at and how long it takes to film even a short length. So the lighting does shift quite a lot due to this. Now in the recent vid there was some clouds caught on film that created an unintentional time laps effect. If you watch my Save the Protector of Fire Vid this becomes really apparent when the sun actually sets completely while I was trying to film.

I think part of the problem may be due to me not planning out my stripes and basically making them up as I go. I don't actually know how to add sounds as I am a novice to the whole making videos deal. I appreciate your honesty in regards to both the lack of sound and the changing lighting. Any further advice you may offer on how to combat both of these with limited resources would be choice. Haven't had a chance to film the 3rd part but hopefully it will be soon. I am working on combining them with some hopefully cool transitions for the final project. Now that I have all of the Winter wave I may soon have to get all of the Toa into a single Video.

Planning is definitely a big part of making a video. If you don't start out with a clear idea of what you want to accomplish and how you're going to do it, the end result may not be as outstanding as the initial ideas you thought of because you haven't fleshed them out to make them even more amazing. So next time you do this, I'd definitely recommend starting by writing down your ideas, and then sketching the different scenes out in a storyboard format.

As for adding sounds, there are loads of video editing programs out there. The one I use most frequently is Windows Movie Maker, which is a free program. If you have a Mac, the iMovie program is also a good one from what I've seen (it's $15, so it isn't too costly). Although the programs I'd recommend the most are Adobe Premier Elements or Sony Vegas. All of these programs allow you to drag and drop sound clips into place, cut them up into smaller bits, and even alter the way they sound.

For lighting, a good combat for that is to look ahead at the weather and figure out when it would be a good time to film. Another strategy is to film a lot of short scenes that are close-up instead of very long wide shots. This allows you to be able to focus on one small area instead of a large one, so if a cloud suddenly blocks your light source, you can quickly resume or change the angle of the camera. Differences in lighting are also not as noticeable when shooting a smaller area.

If you're filming inside, don't rely on the sunlight for your lighting (for the same reasons as outside). Instead, use overhead lights if you have them, and throw a couple desk lamps into the mix. For indoor lighting, I'd recommend using LEDs. They emit white light, which is much friendlier to pictures than yellow light, and in most cases are cheaper and emit less heat.

Another way to combat lighting differences is to manually change the white balance on your camera. When I do my indoor photography, I use a combination of outdoor light and my overhead lights (which actually emit yellow light). But I can change the white balance on my camera so the things in my pictures don't have that notorious yellow tint.

Hope this helps! :)
