Bionicle Monster Hunter

So a friend and I have been bouncing around ideas for a Bionicle game based on Monster Hunter 4. Taking the first 3 years of Bionicle and playing them as a Toa, and fighting Rahi throughout the island of Mata Nui.

For those who don't know, Monster Hunter (in a nutshell) is a game where you play as a Hunter, but you yourself do not level, you progress by upgrading weapons and armor. You travel the world taking quests and fighting monsters, each with their own battle strategy and design.

Some ideas we had for this game:

  • Start the game and pick a Toa for your character
  • Intro tutorial: wake up on beach, pick up weapons/armor from canister. Meet Matoran, get chased by a rahi and the scripted event teaches controls
  • Each Toa's tools represent a different fighting styles (Pohatu's spike shoes for melee, Kopaka sword and board technique, etc...)
  • Each village has certain quests and mini-storylines to fend off creatures in that region
  • Expeditions is how to expand the map and eventually link Villages together (explore until you reach a new village, then can quick travel to it)
  • Weapons and armors you craft from materials harvested from Rahi resemble that creature/its ability

We know that something like this would never be created, but we are having a lot of fun fleshing it out and I think BZP would too. What would you add or like to incorporate in this amazing-not real Rahi Hunter game?

Bionicle: ANP aims to create narrated versions of all the Bionicle books, with voice actors for each character, and music taken from various media to enhance the story. Check here if you're interested in voicing a character, and here for the chapters that've already been released!

A minor pedantic correction: Monster Hunter is built on player skill leveling up, instead of the player's character.

Anyway, as much as I love Monster Hunter, it sounds like it wouldn't match up tremendously well with the Bionicle universe. For one thing, characters with melee weapons (pretty much everyone in Bionicle) having elemental powers that can act from a distance would be a general odd break from the Monster Hunter-style combat. I guess if characters were limited to only melee weapons (with elemental attributes!) perhaps something could work out.

It would be really cool at any rate, even if not practical.

Is this suppose to be a simulator game like you'd like to make an actual Bionicle game based off the Monster Hunter franchise? Or is it more of an RPG idea for the forum for members to play?

I've never played any of the Monster Hunter games, but I've heard from some of my coworkers that Monster Hunter 4 is really good. A 'Bionicle' version of it sounds like it would be a lot of fun. One thing I would wish for it, though, would be that the Toa could build and use an Exo-Toa suit. That would be very cool IMO.

Everyone is one choice away from being the bad guy in another person's story.

So like the mobile game but with a refined combat system and RPG elements? I could be game for that.
