"Squishy bits, in my Bionicle? I don't think so!"

Recommended Posts

So I’ve been having a bit of a think about my approach to the whole biomechanical thing with G1 Bionicle, and I’ve had a pretty drastic change of heart. I used to be vehemently against the whole idea of the characters having organic components, likely mostly due to how it was portrayed in the Mask of Light (bloody gross muscle pods eugh). I’m definitely one of those people who looks to the sets as a very close to accurate portrayal as the characters - because Bionicle is a toyline after all - and due to the majority of the sets looking pretty much entirely mechanoid, I never really liked the idea of them being a mix of mecha and orga.

But, after talking with people and reading up on stuff, I think I can let my silly little bias against the biomechanical business with G1 go out to pasture once and for all. I mean, the organic stuff is all internal and synthetic, and it’s integrated with the mechanical stuff which is cool. Also, the fact that the characters in G1 can “eat” to take in energy adds a little more depth and responsibility to them than them just being autons lost in the wilderness. And anyway, organic terminology could always just be describing synthetic mechanisms which process similar jobs to truly organic ones, so it’s not just like the human cardiovascular system shoved into ASIMO. I still call massive bullroar on the whole thing with the tubes on the Toa Mahri being gills though - that’s clearly adaptive armour scuba gear, Greg.

With G2 however, I don’t really see Lego elaborating as of yet - or ever - on whether or not the Toa and whatnot have organs and stuff. I think it’s just easier to, for the time being, assume that they are as they appear - big, mechanoid dudes and dudettes with magical masks. Who knows if TLG will even delve that deep with G2 mythos? Maybe the “Bio” in “Bionicle” this time around really is just the Toa’s control over natural forces?

EDIT: Removed some naughty words.

Well actually, the Protectors are said to have "sons" and we have seem young villagers.

Which means the villagers can biologically reproduce.

Oh my dear lord... I can only imagine what this will bring up on the internet. >~<

Technically...this is old news. Go on Biosector01; Agori and Glatorian are more biological than mechanical and can therefore reproduce.

You're welcome  B-)

Internet, don't you dare do that to Bonkles. You've already made Pokemon, MLP and FNaF unclean, you're not doing with Bionicle, too!

So.

They definitely are Bio-mechanical beings.

The Toa in G1 were also "brothers" which was meant in a more, Brothers in Arms, sense, there's likely a meaning for son which doesn't necessitate offspring in G2.

"Apprentice"? "Follower"?

Those are the only two I can think of, like a older villager takes a newly spawned villager under its wing and teaches it the craft it does to eventually replace its elder?

Elemental Rahi in Gen2, anyone? A write-up for an initial video for a G2 plot

I really wish everyone would stop trying to play join the dots with Gen 1 and Gen 2 though,it seems there's a couple new threads everyday and often they're duplicates of already existing conversations! Or simply parallel them with a slightly new 'twist'! Gen 2 is NEW, it is NOT Gen 1 and it is NOT a continuation. Outside of the characters we already have I personally don't want to see ANY old characters return. I think it will cheapen the whole experience to those of us familiar with the original line...

I've always imagined them having muscles that move pistons, blood in artificial tubing, purely electrical (non-biological) nerves, but no digestive system. Instead, absorbing energy from food goes straight to a battery.

Being purely mechanical makes them nothing but robots, which is unworthy for the emotions they can feel.

Also, how come we see a small Villager who is obviously younger?

Unless a really obvious source is churning them out by the minute(LEGO wouldn't do that, it would cause too many innuendos), it's literally "Son".

So they are Bio-Mechanical.

One of the Protectors said that their titles and masks have been passed down from generation to generation, father to son. If that's not biological reproduction via organic beings with heavy nanotechnological augmentations, then I don't know what is.

Can I just have a photoshopped image of the protector and little villager with the caption:

"Son, it's time we had 'The Talk'"

Also I don't see why reproducing biomechanical organisms is such a huge thing. Haven't we seen this before? What else were those tiny maskless imp things in Metru-Nui?

It each their own... A picture is worth a thousand words and a single word can have a thousand meanings.

Anyway "Brother" like many familiar terms can be addressed in a not-family manner. More so over as in a friendly one. Such an example of Brother in Arms, Brother from another Mother, Brothers in a cause. Similarly you have terms like well Like a brother(or other family member). This brings us to the son interpretation. From what I can tell there has really only been one confirmed "child" in Gen 2 as I may be taking the one from the prophecy and the dinky little guy from Tahu's arrival video as the same one. Anyway the Term father to son is only valued when you first define son in the Gen2 universe. It is a biological term? Yeas before you say it I understand the phrase Bio is in there. Or if it is more of a symbolic term referencing age differences. "He's like a son to me." An addressed Father figure when seen from reverse. Some people refer to a male child as "son" even though there is no actual genetic connection.

Anyway what that long winded paragraph was meant to say was when referencing "from father to son" in the story that does not directly state a genetic or biological involvement with the successor. Similarly how in some societies the child belongs to all the adults regardless of who the genetic parent is. So simply put Son does not even validate proof that biological reproduction takes place in Gen2. Further more reproduction can take effect on many levels ranging from budding, to segmentation, to whatever you want to call cloning or whatever is going on with the Red Star in Gen1.

Now you must think that some form of life and death takes place meaning biological components but that can also be seen as false. Maybe to die the Protectors have to either A) be killed, or B) just rust away over time.

To get back to the main topic though being purely mechanical does not really rule out the aspect of "squishy parts" As some media has had more organic feel to their parts. Transformers comes to mind as they breath and cough even though they are capable of surviving in the vacuum of space. Also the human body has often been described as a "well oiled Machine" and all of our functions are controlled via electrical signals to and from the brain. Similar to how computer chips work. We are just carbon based machines.

How about because they were not made for that purpose. They were not made to continue to populate the MU till it got full and no one could move around freely. Matoran are constructed by highly advanced machines and i bet there are parts in their bodies that wirelessly tell these machines what the Matoran populations are and automatically forge new matoran if populations are running low (that's how my head canon and ARA has it). No need for government sanctioned censuses here!

Mask-less imp things? There were plenty of mask-less lifeforms in that movie. What you are probably thinking of are probably the drones/fully mechanical robots that were made to specifically help mask makes with their jobs. I'm sure that they were in the other metru's, working on the behind-the-scenes things to help the matoran populace maintan Metru-Nui (not sure if they would be anywhere else, Metru-Nui was about the most advanced place in the MU).

I know what you mean, and I'm doubting that there will be much attention to detail and worldbuilding as there was in G1. Still crossing my fingers for when the books come out
