'Strange' Finds

Where to start?

Ok, I'll just say that more than half my Bionicle collection has been from Value Village purchases.

I have around 150 official sets, most of which were purchased new, but some were Value Village or Bricklink purchases.

And I have about 160 Bionicle figures that are not official sets, a lot of whom are larger and a greater piece count than an average set, and almost all of those parts are from purchases from Value Village, with a little Bricklink and official set that I got new at some point. There was a time where I found a lot of Bionicles at my local Value Village. The most recent was a partial Exo-Toa (with box and instructions!)and 4 Toa Metru. I also once found a MISB original Lewa. It is now my brother's and is still MISB.

I once saw Lhikaan at a Toys R Us in 2006. I wanted to buy him so badly but my family had lacked the funds.

I think a walgreens near where I live sold piraka, cardboard display and everything, well into 09-10...that was admittedly pretty cool, probably should have got some...

Also, two days ago, I saw a manas power brick and matching remote for a total of $2 in a middle-of-nowhere thrift shop...probably should have bought those too XD

Talk about strange, I found a MISB Toa Lesovikk as well as MISB Toa Iruini and Toa Norik in Ebay. Don't normally find that at all!

Well, there was that time around 2006 when my local Toys"R"Us had Kraata canisters registered as one cent each. It was then that I got a few for myself and my older brother bought all of the remaining ones within the store. My brother came home with a big bag of 50-100 Kraata packs.

There was also a time in mid-2013 where my local Reject Shop was selling Bionicle trading card packs from 01/02. My sister bought me one, and so I got most of the remaining stock a week later.

I remember seeing three of them in a Toys R Us in winter of 06. In fact, most Toys R Us's that I went to from 04-06 had at least one Lhikan in stock at all times. I guess he was a bit of a shelfwarmer, though I can't really see why.

Chuck Norik is no match for Bruce Lhikan!

My local Target had Takanuva and Makuta sets for years. I can't remember exactly which year I got Takanuva, but it wa well after 2003. I think they had Makuta well into late 2007, shortly before the Phantoka Makuta came out. Sadly, never got him. I think they also had Rahkshi with Shadow Kraata into 2004 or 2005 and Vahki with Disks of Time and gold Vahi into at least 2005. I took advantage of these.

There's a store called Tuesday Morning that buys old stock from other stores and sells them for lower prices. That's how I got a few of OOP sets. I got Hafu and Macku there somewhere around 2004-2005, and I received Battle of Metru Nui and Piraka Stonghold sets as gifts that were originally purchased there (probably 2006 and 2007, respectively). I remember seeing Pridak there once in 2008, though I got him for Christmas in 2006.

A now defunct toy store I frequented still had 2001 LEGO sets in 2006. Their BIONICLE canister selection extended back two or three years, and they may have had larger sets going even further back. I want to say they did, but my memory is a bit fuzzy.

Tis' no surprise that they went out of business. =P

I found the 2005 titans at some store in 2007, and the 2004 titans at a Walgreens in 2008 (if memory serves.) I also found Krika at a Ben Franklin in 2010. A bit more remarkably, said store also had a Harry Potter set from 2001, at the same time.

Geez if only more collector stores selled more retro Bionicle sets, so I dont have to always go on Ebay.

Gametraders was the best store I found in a while and thats were they had a legit Pokemon Emerald cart as well as other cartridges for different consols. Did I ever mention they selled consoles such as the N64 and SNES?

I wish there was a shop like this only with retro lego sets such as old Bionicle sets

Well I saw a bundle pack at a Freds once not too long ago that had a Hero Factory movie in it with a set and something else I cannot quite remember. That was weird with how long Hero factory has been out of circulation. Though what do I know...

Forgot to mention: I bought Nidhiki and Krekka at a Walgreens sometime in maybe 2005, but that's not too far off. I've always noticed that in the early years, stores always had stock of earlier years' sets, like in 2003, most sets from 2001 and 2002 were still extremely common.

I also have a question: Has anybody else noticed that Whenua sold out faster than the other Turaga? I had all the other Turaga by early 2002, but I didn't get him until around 2005 on eBay. I think he was completely sold out by 2002, and no stores had him, not even LEGO Shop@Home. Was he popular or something?

I just remembered, but there was this one time I went to Gamestop a couple years ago and they had Maze of Shadows for the GBA... I'd been looking for that game for years and I was so stoked to find it.

Another time, my bro found Matoran Adventures (I think it's called that?) for the GBA at Gamestop... he never actually finished it though. :P

I once found a used Lewa Nuva at Goodwill. I bought it, since I had long since lost many of my own Lewa Nuva's parts. When I got home and opened the canister, I was surprised to find that it included not just Lewa Nuva, but also the original Lewa!

Just yesterday I found a Hero Factory alone among a shelf of Bionicles in Barnes & Noble's. It had "HF Sucks" written on the packaging in permanent marker.

Can you post a picture?

I didn't buy it. I only had $30 and had to buy Lewa and LOSS. If I had more I would've bought it.

The strangest thing I've found happened recently. I was looking at local ads online, and someone posted an ad for three of the Toa Mata- Kopaka, Lewa, and Gali. They're all sealed, and they were in some kind of 3-pack very similar to this.

I haven't received it yet, but when I do I'll post pictures because I'd like to find out where it came from. Only paid $30 CAD for it.

I remember seeing that at Costco, back in '02. Good find!

Once found a Pahrak-Kal in a market, no cannister, and I got it for about 5 euros I think. Still has a Ca-Kal Krana in it's head. Now it just sits in my room, curled up as a little ball, awaiting the day for the call of the bahrag, if I ever taken them down from the attic and rebuild them.

Mine isn't as cool as you guys but I was looking for the new Bonkles in all of the stores (Toys are Us, WalMart, the regulars) and none of them had it. Discouraged I went to Barnes and Noble to buy a book with the money I had saved up. There, I found all the new sets and was able to buy them all!!!

There's a TRU in my area that is quite outdated, rundown and just in a plain bad neighborhood. I'm not too sure how it's still in business. Back in 03/04, I found Manas on deep clearance for 30 bucks and Muaka and Kane-Ra for 40 bucks. No idea why Muaka and Kane-Ra would be higher, but that was nice. They also had that old Kanohi mask holder that I ended up getting for a dollar since there was no price tag. I should probably go back there soon.
